A teacher’s greatest lesson:

I think of him often every graduation season. An immense man to my 17-year-old eyes with a deep voice, long arms and hair that would cascade over his forehead like an excited Russian pianist. My prep school English teacher Arthur G. Hughes (AGH in his written comments). I had qualified for his honors class by three years of reading American novels and a devotion to writing, albeit clumsy. Mr. Hughes saw in me things I was unaware of, but he would help me discover. [Snip] Then, there was that unforgettable day in class.

English teachers can often be an irritating lot but some are special. I enjoyed the story.

Good point. I had a great math teacher, who in a very small, scratching to be blue collar, town in rural central Fla put together a special bus and offered interested HS students a once a week computer programming course at a state university at night, once a week. In the late 60s there were no programming classes in High Schools, mostly because computers were huge and required dedicated staff and cooled rooms, impossible for HSs. I thought many years later that I should thank him for doing that. It was extra time and hassle for him, and I doubt he got paid. But it was wonderful for us to get access to the future that way, taste the joys of bending that fast but amazingly inflexible ("stupid") machine to your will and make it do what you actually wanted it to do. I did a career in engineering, specializing in computer modeling, and that was the first time I ever programmed a computer. Remembered very fondly. Thanks, Mr. Jones. It is appreciated, even if I didn't get to tell you.

The president walks into a bar: How humor

So, Bill Clinton walks into a bar with a parrot on his shoulder. Bartender says, “Does he talk?” Parrot says, “Not for less than 500 grand.” That’s an old-fashioned political joke — old-fashioned as in the 1990s. It takes a recognizable slice of truth, gives it an unexpected twist and out comes a laugh that leaves no mark. Today’s American political humor is drastically different, reflecting a drastically different country than the one late-night legend Johnny Carson bid farewell to 27 years ago this month. [Snip] Such shows have always made fun of Republicans, but

One distinctive characteristic of every presidency, regardless of party, is the powerful desire to control the flow of information about it. This is especially true during first terms, as the desire for a second one mounts. As you may have noticed, President Donald Trump seeks to manage the messaging from and the reporting on his White House by flooding the zone with news, usually of his own making and from his own mouth or cellphone. It worked in 2016. This is a precarious business in politics because

I knew it! You probably did too. People generally are getting dumber. Not anyone reading or writing this post, of course. But the world population in general. IQ levels inexorably rose during the last century, about three points per decade, according to established research. Now they’re not. In fact, IQ levels are actually in decline — and not just in Congress. According to a number of studies, beginning around the turn of this century, IQ test scores were found to be declining across Britain, Germany, Scandinavia, Australia and

Here’s an interesting juxtaposition of polls showing how one emotional national controversy can develop and endure bitterly for decades while another doesn’t, both thanks to the timing of landmark Supreme Court decisions. A new Gallup Poll out this week shows support for same-sex marriage has held in the 60-to-mid-60s range since the Supreme Court approved it just two years ago next month. Support for gay marriage has been trending upward since 1996 when Gallup first asked the question and found only 27 percent approval. Now, let’s look at the divisive issue of abortion. It was issued by the Supreme Court in 1973, the Roe v Wade decision.

Some inexplicable things come out of our nation’s capital. Occasionally, similar puzzlements emerge elsewhere in the nation. A current one is the developing outbreak of preventable measles that’s become so serious now that federal officials have threatened some with unusually restrictive travel bans. Some of us were unaware that such a federal Do Not Board List exists for civilians who have nothing to do with suspected terrorism. But it does. And health officials in five states have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about banning travel by some citizens suspected of being in the 21-day incubation period for

It was supposed to be part of the relaunch of Beto O’Rourke’s fading Democratic primary campaign to recapture the empty charisma he showed while live-streaming his dental cleaning. The hour-long town hall on CNN was more of a re-fizzle. The abysmal overnight audience ratings proved the ancient show biz adage about customers: If they don’t want to come, you can’t stop ’em. Nielsen’s study of the total audience showed that viewers were less than excited about watching the bland ex-congressman from El Paso smile and dance around questions. The town hall’s total audience was 30 percent smaller than a normal Tuesday evening audience. That’s enough to give the show

Another front is opening these days in the eternal battle of the sexes. Only this one in the workplace is not about equal pay or equal job opportunities. It’s about the thermostat. A new study reveals what a lot of couples already knew: Women like their living spaces a lot warmer than men do. In fact, women’s brains work significantly better in warmer work temperatures. Men prefer cooler room temperatures. Perhaps because they rarely wear sleeveless dresses and shirts or skirts on the job. The issue is likely to be an

A new national poll of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents confirms Joe Biden maintains a comfortable 19-point lead over Bernie Sanders and the rest of the polyglot posse seeking the party’s presidential nomination next year. But even more interesting at this early stage is that the new Hill-HarrisX Poll out Wednesday also confirms several other recent surveys that found Democrats are much more interested in ousting President Donald Trump than finding a candidate that matches their ideological leaning. If this continues, it’s good news

How is it possible to have an American flag that’s too large, you might ask? Especially on a national holiday honoring the too many who’ve given their lives for it. Well, the town elders of Statesville, N.C. have informed the owner of the local Camping World outlet that its 40 x 80 foot American flag is too large. [Snip] The town is suing Camping World Gander Outdoors, a NASCAR sponsor, seeking a fine of $50 a day. Camping World’s owner suggests the town leaders find a flagpole and sit on it. The owner is Marcus Lemonis, a billionaire businessman and host of CNBC’s most popular reality TV show “The Profit.”

Well, it’s official. Washington’s governor has signed that freaky human composting funeral legislation that allows residents to recycle loved ones like Seattle requires food waste be composted. This makes that zany, wet state the very first and quite possibly the very last to allow composting of human bodies instead of standard burial or cremation. [Snip] According to the provisions, licensed facilities are now authorized to accept your loved one’s bodily remains for “natural organic reduction.” After several weeks, two wheelbarrow loads of organic mulch are returned to the family. “Where

Let’s be clear about a few things regarding “carbon taxes”. First, the system of taxing carbon emissions, also known as “cap-n-trade”, has absolutely nothing to do with climate change. Second a “carbon tax” is the holy grail for the totalitarian globalist world view. The concept of a tax on carbon emissions was developed inside the same financial network of multinational monetary interests that control the current global trade system. Powerful financial interests directly connected to The World Bank (WB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Trade Organization (WTO), together with global banking interests connected to Wall Street and

President Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on all Mexican imports until Mexico takes serious action to control its border with the U.S. shocked the Washington Beltway, Wall Street, and the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. These centers of financial and political power, lulled by a U.S. Congress that has refused to act and activist federal judges who have stymied Trump’s border control efforts at every step, were jolted awake by Trump’s ultimatum. But they should not have been surprised. The president issued a similar threat back in April. And, Trump promised from day one of his presidential campaign that he would make stanching the flow of illegal immigration,
