North Carolina State University scholar Jason Miller was so dismayed by the newly declassified information on Martin Luther King that he halted his "two scholarly projects about King". For one thing any new research on King could potentially become radioactive in the era of #MeToo. (Snip) If Washington and Jefferson can become villains overnight why not King? Western academic culture is besieged by the modern version of the Donatist heresy, a 4th century belief that "Christian clergy must be faultless for their ministry to be effective and their prayers and sacraments to be valid." Since King was not flawless doesn't that damage his legacy?

One of Wretchard's better pieces. Yes, we are imperfect, but imperfect people sometimes do good things,
and their imperfection does not destroy the goodness of the deed.
And his point that there is no "my truth", there is just "THE truth", is a critical one.
Well worth the time spent.
I was never a fan of MLK the man. But I am a fan of some of his ideas presented in
speeches. I have long separated the two.

Fernandez makes a valid distinction. We have long appreciated people like George Patton, Christopher Columbus, Teddy Roosevelt and others who may not had the gentle and peaceful demeanor of Ghandi but they got the job done and deserve their places in the history books. Some people are in our memories who maybe do deserve our disdain like George Custer, Vanderbilt, Sherman and others who were nasty people and not above murder. MLK was flawed but he presented a good path for blacks to follow, as opposed to Reverend Wright, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, Eric Holder, Barack Obama and the many hate-mongers who preach victimhood and racism. Leave MLK's statues alone but also those of Washington, Jefferson, Lee, Grant and others who were important in building America. In their time, slavery was considered a normal way of life and was practiced worldwide. America did not do anything cruel or different but we were the ones who finally abolished it. More blacks should remember that accomplishment instead of demanding reparations and a status of permanent victimhood.

So here's my question about all this: Is there actually any PROOF that MLK did these things or is it all just rumor, speculation, and "he said/she said"? Because if there's no real proof, why are we even talking about it?
By the way, you used to be able to do a Web search that popped up an official looking site that had all kinds of horrible things on it about MLK, but when you researched the Web address, you discovered it was put out by a white supremists group. Are we now taking THEIR word as truth?
I don't care one way or another about MLK, but to attack someone on the basis of innuendo, rumor, and what a federal agency "says" happened (with no proof) is just disgusting!

"newly declassified information on Martin Luther King"
MLK has always had a reputation as a womanizer, as did JFK. In those days, it was ignored by media. The problem is, in their mania to get Trump, the Left generated a #MeToo movement that set the absurd standard that all women who claim they have been treated unfairly in the slightest way, have been. In addition, they decided that modern standards should be held against historical figures. They charged forth in pink hats.
But a funny thing happened. It has barely impacted Trump at all. Further, Trump has done nothing to awake any reason to attack him for personal behavior. All the claims against him are unproven and in sunlight, faded away. The CPL that made it a personal mission to attack Trump is now facing a lifetime in prison.
But then the other shoe fell. Far more liberals seem to have obvious trails of misbehavior than Conservatives. Maybe because liberals knew they would never be held accountable by their voters. This was gold certified by BJ Clintoon who got away with sexual assault. Conservatives who misbehave are often bounced out of office by the voters or resign in shame because they KNOW they will be.
The whole #MeToo premise is dysfunctional. It brought a badly distorted lens to a long existing problem that the liberals helped to create. They claimed bad sexual behavior shouldn't be held against a person. PROVEN bad behavior should be, just as for any crime. Innuendo and rumor of bad behavior should be considered carefully and set aside if not proven. And people who lived in times of different standards should not be diminished by today's standards. Of course, that is another weapon of the Left and one that will do them more damage than conservatives.

P.S. If they're looking for a heroic person who never sinned, I can point them in the right direction!

This may put me in a bad place, but, over the years of my life, I've played music by composers who were just awful people in their lives, but wrote amazing, beautiful music. There are people who wrote books we all love to read, but they were far from "perfect" in their personal lives. There are people who helped to form this country, but had "issues" that we despise today. Some of our greatest "men" had horrendous blemishes on their souls......I think we can look more closely at some today who should have learned better, but to go back so many years to call them out on things (and when they've been dead for many years) is just not a good thing.

If J. Edgar Hoover actually had incriminating evidence for rape participation - he would have used it in a heartbeat.

Jason Miller cannot call himself a scholar, if he avoids the truth. What a simpleton! Save us, Lord, from these fake scholars!
MLK Jr was a flawed man. He plagiarized his doctoral dissertation at Boston University - the King Center reached that conclusion not long after his death. He lusted after women, especially white women who were blondes.
But he sought freedom and dignity for blacks, in non violent ways.
Other black leaders proposed violence - MLK, by controlling the dialogue, saved lives - black and white.
