Some 41 percent of college students say hate speech shouldn't be protected under the First Amendment, according to a new survey.Just 58 percent said that hate speech should be protected under the amendment, which guarantees American's a right to freedom of speech, according to the survey of 4,407 students by the Miami-based Knight Foundation.'There is a new class of students on college campuses, increasingly varied in background and ideology, who are grappling with the reach and limits of free speech and what it means in the 21st century,' said Sam Gill, Knight Foundation vice president for learning and communities.'Studying their views is key to understanding the impact

Still not convinced federal tax dollars should't be going to universities or local school districts? We're funding this.

So that they don't understand that all sorts of speech can be called "hate speech" by someone. Therefore, you move down a path to nowhere. Allowing free speech, on the other hand, with caution about actions, can be a useful way. We understand that. They will learn.

I thought we were in the post-modern age of moral relativism so "hate" must be relative, no? Sounds like 41% of college students are the haters. This really is the ultimate conversation, isn't it?

Unfortunately, universities and many school systems in this country are hotbeds of Marxism and Communism! The quality of "professors and educators" is low and they are ideologically, not fact driven. The current interest in the failed and deadly ideology of socialism can be laid directly at the feet of the warped and destructive university systems!

Students are too young to remember Skokie, Illinois and the Nazi marches. But their professors aren't.

"I think the government should be able to tell us what to think and what we can say, since we are too stupid to think for ourselves", said Melba Ferntush, majoring in gender studies at Snake's Navel State.

#6, I remember it well, and it was a very big learning tool for tolerance.
I would defend your right to say whatever you want, no matter how mean or hateful, was the general comments. People fought and died to protect that right, and people are free to listen or ignore.
I would also remind those people (41%) that they likely don't agree with everything their parents, siblings, family members, or even friends.

What somebody needs to do is a game called 'who said this'? and then read comments and speeches to the students and ask them if a democrat or republican said this. Bet you dollars to donuts these kids would be gobsmacked to find out how much of it is democrat. They have been so brainwashed that they just do not have a clue.

Their little minds can't grasp the concept that their disdain for constitutional principles (like freedom of speech) comes across as hate speech to those people whose views they can't accept. So the practical upshot is that these students want their ideological adversaries not to have the basic right to say what we think and believe.

Nothing new here.
When Dirty Donna Shalala was chancellor of the U. of Wisconsin Madison, she admitted that when she canceled the appearances of conservative speakers on her campus, she was violating their first amendment rights, but 'there was a threat of violence, so I did the right thing.'
And that happened around 1990.

Well, since at least 75% of college students are brainwashed idiots studying pointless
cr*p and learning nothing real, nothing of any lasting value, why is this surprising?
The only college students getting any real value today are the STEM students who
are getting job skills that will set them up to understand how the world really works,
and how to make, build, invent and fix things.

We need to know what exactly is hate speech, what defines racism and what precisely is sexual assault. The latter is especially troubling as it can be anything from violent rape to touching.

Just went to my son's college graduation, and the BS spoken by the president of the university about diversity and the tolerance of different points of views was laughable, and the audience knew it. Any position other than the far left views is immediately shut down with behavior not becoming of a school of higher education.

Absolutely amazing just how stupid college students are today. Many consider their (student's) speech hate speech, so by their standard, they should not be allowed to express their opinions and should be prosecuted. They are too ignorant to understand what they are saying is that hate speech is defined by the recipient and since not all people share their opinions and expressions, they too can be silenced.

As Justice Alito wrote for the Court, “Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express ‘the thought that we hate.’”
