At her weekly news conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was asked whether it's appropriate at this time for Congress to give itself a pay raise."It's not a pay raise, it's a COLA increase," Pelosi responded. "And whether that comes to be, I don't know. It would have to be a bipartisan initiative."In this case, Congress could allow itself a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) that would raise lawmakers' pay by $4,500 to $178,500, up from the current $174,000. (According to the Congressional Research Service, members of both the House and Senate are paid a salary of $174,000. The House and Senate majority and minority leaders are paid $193,400; and

No. COLA is the $40 increase in SS and take back $20 in increases Medicare. That is COLA. You just want a raise and we aren't grovelling about it anymore.

Sorry, but just one other thought, Did you finish that budget yet? Until you *do* your job how can you justify any increase?

Not to worry. Democrats need pay raises so they can redistribute the extra money to the poor, which is what they do. Because they're compassionate. And you aren't.

Almost $200,000 a year for those incompetent losers. I think the pay raise should be put to a vote of taxpayers.

Politicians go to D.C. with $200 in the bank and leave 30 years later with millions. They engage in insider trading (not illegal for them), grease the skids for family and friends by exerting influence to get them cushy jobs involving no work (and never a real product) and fat contracts all at the expense of actual, productive citizens. These people are utterly shameless and, what with the complete lack of consequences for their corruption, are out in the open in their slimy dealings - almost as if they want to rub it in our faces. Given the amount of money made by these people through influence peddling, graft, corruption, skimming from campaign contributions (legal bribery) they SHOULD BE PAYING US FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME WEALTHY DESPITE THE LACK OF TALENT, INTELLIGENCE AND INTEGRITY displayed by damned near every one of them. The only thing these people are good at is scamming the public for votes and spreading around other people's money to pay off constituents and ensure reelection.

This is perfectly in keeping with the democrat conviction that everyone should be paid well regardless of absence of contribution to country, society,, family or even self. Actually, they should be fined for their negative contribution.

"COLA increase"? More lib doublespeak. Lauughable. Libs and Dems are forever trying to change the meaning of language for their convenience. (One of the best examples is "women's reproductive health," which really means butchering unborn children.)
Libs and Dems are forever trying to rewrite history for their convenience, too.

A $40 dollar COLA for SS recipients and a $4500 COLA for congress, because the cost of living is so much cheaper for the peons. Of course, congresses COLA comes from that bottomless pocketbook, called the American taxpayer. The SS COLA has to come from the broke SS trust fund, raided by congress to fund all of their pet projects, and to support all the illegal democrat voters that have never contributed that they are flooding the country with. So, HELL no!

Until the border crisis is ended, and every illegal is sent back to where they came from, I suggest a pay cut for Congress. Something in the neighborhood of 50%.

Pay yesterday $100.
Pay today $101
That's a pay raise. Don't really care how much you spend.

People at these pay levels don't get COLAs. As an engineer, I got paid increases for my productivity and accepting increased responsibility. Of course if we did that for most of those in Congress, THEY would have to pay US. The high rate of pay for Congress critters attracts professional politicians who are little more than grifters.
Tell you what. Agree to limit Senators to 2 terms and Representatives to 6 terms and you can have your raise.

Show that you can really do the job you were elected for, and then we can talk about pay raises. Its absurd that they need more regardless. $174,000 isn't enough? Get real. Housing is too expensive in DC? Build Congress a dormitory.

Giver them a pay raise!
But they must pay their own:
rent
transportation cost(air and ground)
meal(breakfast, lunch & dinner)
hotel cost(room & tax)
all legal fees
administrative cost(secretary & interns)
Medical & insurance
....did I miss anything?

A raise ? Everyday you insult taxpayers. You work part time and get paid full time while lining your own pockets. Every politician in this country comes to US with lies and promises asking for donations and our votes. They are elected to represent We the People of These United States of America and to uphold the Constitution as it stands. And what do they do? Fight tooth and nail for illegals.
All across America are citizens earning less than $1000 a month on SS. They are punished because they went on SSDI early. They live in poverty while an illegal gets cradle to grave care and pop out Anchor Babies.
Could We vote on your raise ?

Reduce their salaries to the $15.00 per hour Living Wage. And issue time cards, so they can document time actually spent doing the People's work.

People sometimes say that we should cut congress' pay until they actually do something. That won't work. They aren't in it for the money; they're in it to get the 'fame' that they would not otherwise be able to earn. If we could only threaten to reduce their fame and power they might finally act on our behalf.

I don't care what she calls it--she doesn't deserve it, and neither do her house colleagues--of any party. What it's darn sure not is a MERIT increase, because not a single one of those useless government employees is worth a lick. I'd love to fire them all.

I want to know do congressmen get paid the rest of their lives and keep the special insurance package too? We have a one term (2 years) representative in my town who went to DC owning a small house and came back to buy a mini mansion and as far as I know has had no job since he came back some time ago....several people have told me he gets his salary as a congressman the rest of his life....can’t be true can it? And if so WHY?!?

I get annoyed with how much time they take off. They don't just take a long weekend for Memorial Day but can take two weeks off. Why do they need a raise or COLA increase? If they would stay in Washington and work more days, I would support this.
