TAMPA, Fla. - The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops is urging Gov. Ron DeSantis to spare the life of convicted Tampa Bay serial rapist and murderer Bobby Joe Long.
In a letter to the governor, the bishops asked DeSantis to commute Long's sentence to life in prison, specifically pointing out mitigating circumstances in Long's case.
The letter reads, in part:
"Since his sentencing, modern medicine has learned a great deal about the effects of brain trauma. His attorneys have filed briefs that call attention to the multiple traumas he experienced throughout his life, including the motorcycle accident he suffered in 1974. That incident

Explain to me how a life of violence, imprisonment and gang rape is more Christian than allowing a human being to move on, make amends, and meet his Maker.

Relocate him to the Vatican. Surely they would love to have him there.

More mischief inspired by Pope Francis, who stated recently (and wrongly) that the death penalty is always "inadmissible", which seems to be PF speak for always wrong.

In 1984, while on probation for assault, Long began driving around, trawling for victims in areas known for prostitution and in bars where women were found alone. He claimed his victims approached him, after which he persuaded them to enter his car and took them to an apartment. There he bound his victims with rope and ligature collars he fashioned using a variety of rope knots, later confessing that he derived sadistic pleasure from the abduction, rape, and brutal murder of his victims. Some he strangled, others he killed by slitting their throats or bludgeoning. The bodies were placed in unique positions or "displayed," for example with their legs splayed five feet apart at odd angles. Of Long's ten known victims, five were identified as sex workers, two as exotic dancers, one was a factory worker, one was a student, and one was of unknown occupation.
Here are the names and ages of his Known victims:
Artiss Ann Wick, 20 – killed March 27, 1984
Ngeun Thi Long, 19 – killed May 13, 1984
Michelle Denise Simms, 22 – killed May 27, 1984
Elizabeth Loudenback, 22 – killed June 8, 1984
Vicky Marie Elliott, 21 – killed September 7, 1984
Chanel Devoun Williams, 18 – killed October 7, 1984
Karen Beth Dinsfriend, 28 – killed October 14, 1984
Kimberly Kyle Hopps, 22 – killed October 31, 1984
Virginia Lee Johnson, 18 – killed November 6, 1984
Kim Marie Swann, 21 – killed November 11, 1984
Lisa McVey, 17 – assaulted November 3, 1984; somehow, she survived!
The SOB should be burned alive, then sent straight to Hell!

Given Pope Frank's goofy philosophy, we would never have known Jesus had he not been executed on the cross to be resurrected. The man is a liberal fraud but we knew that before.
As for brain damage, would you let a Grizzly Bear kill you just because a tree limb fell on its head and it was hurt? Dangerous animals are meant to be killed and this Long monster is no exception.

So he was in a motorcycle accident in 1974, and ten years later, it caused him to go on a murder spree?
What was he doing between 1974 and 1984?

Send him to his Maker. If he can truly repent, he may be saved.
We need him out of our world.

I despise the moral corruption that seems to represent the Vatican and the priesthood more and more. A fish rots from the head down, and the moral rot that the Church seems to tolerate is more than most decent Christians can or should tolerate. Time for Catholics to stop looking the other way, and demand that their church be cleaned up. Ignoring God's own wishes regarding punishment of crime because you would rather seem tolerant is going to come back to bite a lot of people someday.

The reason Lady Justice is portrayed as blindfolded is because punishment is handed out based on what crime you have committed, not why you committed it. Why never excuses what.

The Catholic Church, which I am a member, opposes capital punishment, but unfortunately, rarely if ever, addresses the pain and suffering of the victims, their families, their loved ones or the continued evil perpetrated by offenders in prison.
I attend church regularly and I can't remember any vigil, prayer service, intention or sermon for the victims of violent crime. A sad commentary on the mindset American bishops. Publicly praying for monsters appears far more fashionable than worrying about the flock.
The statement I find curious, "denies the possibility of redemption." We may all unexpectedly die tomorrow, yet it is up to us to seek redemption today. Who then is denying us the possibility of redemption, fate, the drunk driver, the Almighty? The state is not denying Long redemption any more than we are being denied redemption by tomorrows events.
So on behalf of Catholics, pray for the victims, their families and loved ones and all the innocent who suffer for these crimes. Pray for Long repents before he meets his maker. God have mercy on his soul. Amen.

Did they publish the letter to the governors of NY and Virginia asking them to spare the lives of babies inside or outside the womb? Where is the prayer vigil for them?

Oh, gosh, he had bad things happen to him and they contributed to his going out to rape and murder. At least 10 women.
I don't really care why he did what he did, or what contributed to it. I care that he never walk free again and, so long as he is alive and so long as their are crazy Democrats in politics, there's a chance he will walk free. Therefore, unless there is any doubt at all as to whether or not he did it, he should receive the death penalty, sooner rather than later.

Perhaps the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops might become interested in the effects of victim trauma.

Besides advocating for murderers, rapists and illegal aliens, it is time to revoke the Catholic Church's tax-exempt status! They are, obviously, no longer a church but a political action group!

Talk about covering one's behind. So the bishops of the Catholic church, which is full of pediphile rapist, wants to set the precedent that murdering rapist can get off. Once that is done, the Catholic Bishops can claim brain damage priest raped all those little boys and shouldn't be held accontable. These peverts are despicable. Clean your house, don't try to bend the laws to protect the Catholic perverts that rape little boys.

This is the same BS we heard in the 60's and 70's. There were always extenuating circumstances that caused evil people to commit crimes. In CA it led to the overturning of the death penalty and that's why Charlie Manson sat in prison for almost 50 yrs. And we paid for that no good for 5 decades. As a practicing Catholic I am disgusted with this. I realize that the Catholic Church is against the death penalty but to have a prayer vigil, absolutely not. He has had every chance to beg forgiveness from God. Hope he used his time wisely.

No. The moral and intellectual flaccidity belongs to the bishops, who fail to understand the concept of punishment..After 34 years, not much is left in the way of deterrence; that's an argument for speeding up the judicial process, not for ending it. Morally serious societies believe the price for the wanton taking of innocent life must be the life of the murderer. Nobody lives forever. BJL is only being given a boost.
