Americans often pride themselves on their lawns. Maintaining our green grassy landscapes and colorful gardens is a $36 billion a year industry. Three-fourths of us have told pollsters that “my lawn and garden (are) a reflection of my personality.” But the eco-lobby doesn’t want us to have nice things. “On balance, lawns are awful for the planet,” Eric Holthaus wrote last week in Grist, an environmentalist online magazine. “Our addiction to lawns means that grass is the single largest irrigated agricultural ‘crop’ in America, more than corn, wheat,

But, but, but lawns are as effective at scrubbing CO2 from the air and replacing it with O2 as sacred trees that we can´t cut down.
I smell BS and it´s not fertilizer.

They don’t like lawns because they are a public statement of private property.

I´m as conservative as you can get, but have to agree that modern American practices with lawn-keeping are terrible for the environment.
A beautiful lake near me is being destroyed by phosphate fertilizers –washed down the slope from residents´ chemically treated yards. The fertilizer causes the fish and other lake flora and fauna to die off. Not to mention so much slimy, stinky algae that no one wants to swim in the lake anymore.
And then there´s the horrendous noise generated by lawn-keeping practices of the 20th century ... e.g. lawnkeepers (or their Mexican hirees) who seem to think they must blow every fragment of a leaf into oblivion.
My difference with leftist environmentalists is that I don´t think gov´t should interfere with individual choices in this area. I would rather see Americans adopt more environmentally-friendly practices, voluntarily.
However with some practices resulting in contamination of our water supply, I can see a reasonable role for gov´t to limit use of certain chemicals.

My front yard is edible landscaping with Fig trees, blueberry bushes, apple trees, almond tree, and Pomegranite trees. The grass is what my husband referred to as "prairi-fication". If the neighbors don´t like the tall grass, they can cut it. I have enough on the rest of the property to deal with. I DO NOT use RoundUp. That is a no no.

Grass and tree also act as natural air conditioning. Uneducated idiots.

If you live in Vegas, perhaps preserving water is an issue. But in my town there is no shortage of water, and it is not feasible to send our extra water to Africa to water their crops during a drought.
So I must conclude that your hatred of my lawn is more about the African concept of "leveling". If you live in the projects and cannot have a yard, it is not fair for me to have a nice house and a yard. We should all be the same.

My lawn is a natural one. It has grass, clover, violets and even some dandelions. I don´t sweat it (although I am determined that next year I will kill the crabgrass). I use vinegar with a bit of dishwashing liquid to kill stubborn weeds (and I am looking at you broadleaf plantain). I mow myself and I am 68. My lawn is tidy and I like it.

Lawn shmawn. We Tucsonans are perfectly content with gravel, rocks, and boulders to create interesting "textures" on the ground in contrast to the big wide Blue above. We´re the desert and accept it for exactly what it is. No lawns down here.
But my Big Neighbor to the North thinks it´s St Louis. Phoenix is posh, plush and manicured.
I love it that we have choices! Vive la difference!

Dad used to tell women they should always let their heads head out with seed before the first mowing. That way the lawn could fill out and be more healthy. He´d have them gulping like beached carp.

People of the Book know that in four different scripture references, we shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree. Hope we won´t have to wait until the new world to be free of government overlords.

Here $200 a month was too much for a small lawn so its now weeds and dirt. They have added millions of new people to the area without adding any new water supply so now the priced of water is so high most can´t afford a lawn.

In the NW there is a pretty good water supply thanks to the mountains. Problem is that the forests tend to dry out quite fast and we are urged to conserve water. Grass is loveliest in spring, lush snd green, but a warm dry spell inevitably starts the browning out process. Like hair, grass and clover are renewable resources and come back after three or four days of rain. There is undeniable pleasure in looking at a stretch of newly mown grass, that soothes the psyche, which is at once calming and cooling and comfortable.

Concrete and asphalt are bad for the environment. I say we demolish NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, and other big liberal cities. Being liberals, they should be all for it- unless they are hypocrites!

We have two giant rivers carrying trillions of gallons of fresh water to the sea, flowing through our city.
Go to hell. We have NO water shortage, as a matter of fact, I haven´t been able to mow for quite a while due to TOO WET CONDITIONS.
Everywhere is NOT a desert. Leave me alone.
