The news accounts are oh so breathless about Rodeo Road in Los Angeles being grandly renamed ´President Obama Boulevard.´ Here´s the Associated Press, for one: LOS ANGELES (AP) - A stretch of road in Los Angeles will be renamed after former President Barack Obama during a festival and unveiling ceremony Saturday. Obama Boulevard will replace Rodeo Road, a 3 ½-mile street that runs from Culver City to mid-city Los Angeles, passing the city’s historic black neighborhood. The street honoring America’s first black president will also intersect with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

A public service actually, like every MLK Blvd.
Another lost-cause neighborhood to be avoided at all costs is clearly identified for the poor saps who find themselves confused in Culver City.

I take issue with the phrase "historically black".
Just how many of the monks who founded the mission dedicated to the angels were black?
Historical-no,hysterical-yes.

Why do I imagine that the intersection of MLK Blvd and BHO St will be a place for me to always avoid?
Fair warning. If the street is named MLK, I try to avoid it, no matter what town.

Rodeo Drive is NY cut prime steak, BHO Dr is cow pies. Take a classy name and change it to a pile of crap

Right, #1. A study showed many neighborhoods went downhill after having a street re-named for MLKing. Schools re-named for MLKing became worse too.
Residents in those neighborhoods have begun resisting the re-brandings. While they want to honor King, they recognize reality too.
Will be interesting to see if Obama´s name eventually has a similar effect.
Other changes that bothered me were the many re-brandings in honor of JFK. E.g., Idyllwild Airport became "Kennedy Airport;" and Cape Canaveral became "Cape Kennedy." Happily, the latter change was reversed.

Hmmm, that´s unnecessarily judgemental, well, uh, make that necessarily.

This is NOT "THE" Rodeo Drive through Beverly Hills. This is the low rent Rodeo Road, elsewhere.

Obama Boulevard:
**Parking meters strictly enforced, for Republican drivers.
**No white cars allowed.
**Foreign cars can park wherever they want and drive whichever direction they choose. No need to learn American traffic laws.

It somehow doesn´t evoke the proper level of envy when you tell your friends that you just finished shopping on Obama Boulevard.
They´re like, "what were you doing in the ghetto, girl?"

Just looking around the intersection of MLK Blvd and Obama St. on Google Earth. Far cheaper and FAR safer than in person. Nearby is a large High School. Susan Miller Dorsey HS.
A brief check shows that Dorsey HS rates 7% of their students as "mathematics proficient".
55% black, 45% Hispanic is what they report for their student population.
