Steve Hart, the longtime lawyer for the National Rifle Association board, has been suspended from that role, two people with knowledge of the move told The Daily Beast. In addition, Col. Oliver North–who announced his departure from the powerful gun rights group this morning–has warned board members that the organization could lose its nonprofit status. A spokesperson for the NRA’s outside law firm did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and neither did Hart. A lawyer for North declined to comment.

Maybe, instead of paying for state dinners for the likes of McConnell,Boehner/Ryan etc,the NRA should hire an army of lawyers to fight the goofy gun laws at the local level.
Just once it would be nice to see some value for my dues dollars...

The NRA is by far the most relentless fund raising organization I have ever run into. They just do not quit. I have blocked their numbers on my home phone. I never answer my cell on calls I do not recognize.
I am a life member and will make donations on my own terms. But, My God, please leave me alone to make my own decisions on when and how much I will give. They have driven me to the edge and may not give anymore.

After Obama took office, I felt it prudent to join the NRA. I am an older single lady so each donation is a big deal to me. What the NRA did next was to send me endless expensive mailers. They spent far more on producing and delivering these to me than I ever gave them. What then was the point? The marketing blitz felt like an attack more than a partnership. Whoever took over their "fund-raising" deserved a kick in the pants. Did they not notice that once the endless contacts to their members started that those members dropped out? I talked with my brother in another state and the same thing happened to him. He quit too. We are both still gun owners and supporters of the 2A, but the NRA seemed far too busy pushing for more of my modest earnings.

LaPierre has been through many different elected boards and audits. Many different "ceremonial" presidents. The fact that a conmpany that LtCol. North is financially connect with, is being sued by the NRA for improper use of fund(millions), says alot. McQueen is in the middle of all this. I find it odd North,if he had concerns could not have found a better venue to air them. The NRA is the ONLY voice strong enough and hard ball enough to fight back against the very people North gave all this "ammo" to.

Why are all of the negative stories about the NRA coming from the leftist media? Anyone have a clue?

I am a 50-year Benefactor life member of the NRA and they have my total support. Their great EVP Wayne Lapierre has my total support.
Because of the NRA and him I still have my guns.

As an NRA Benefactor Life Member, I too must state my total support of the NRA. Given the hurricane nastiness incoming from the Democrats in the lead up to the next election, why would any sane individual tend to give credence to constant negative reports on the only - THE ONLY - organization that stands between the law-abiding American citizen and the communist left intent on disarming us?! EVERY organization has its ups and downs. Try to look past the media hype of this episode.
As to innumerable mailings seeking donations, don´t forget that people like George Soros are funding anti-NRA mischief. Where, but the organization´s members can NRA find the wherewithal to combat such anti-funding? Think about it. If you don´t like the fundraising mailings, throw it in the trash; delete the email. How hard can that be?
We´d best stand together or we WILL lose our Second Amendment rights just like Britain and Australia. If we do not, gun confiscation is coming to America. Just listen to the Democrat Presidential Contenders talk about their plans for us. With the hundreds of thousands, even millions of illegal aliens crossing our borders, our 2nd Amendment rights are more important than ever. Give that some thought, please.

The NRA defends a critical goal for all of us and, except for some local and unconstitutional failures, concerning right to carry, the bans on "assault weapons" etc. they have done a superb job. My only question is their efficient use of funds, a problem that develops in all large organizations.

I’ve been a member for many years, but not a lifetime membership. I rarely get any communication from the NRA. However, one organization that I admire, Judicial Watch, sends me several “requests” monthly at each of my addresses. I told them that they probably spend more than I donate on these mailings.

Some interesting comments on this thread. I am an NRA member, and I get no more fundraising solicitations from the NRA, than any other organization in which I have shown an interest. I have never felt pressured to donate; I simply delete or throw away anything that doesn’t interest me. But, if NRA is the one organization that is powerful enough to protect our 2nd amendment, I would never even consider dropping my membership.

Few organizations this big for this long can run without problems. Ollie chose the nuclear option to get things moving and clearing the air and a bit of sunlight is not a bad thing. The NRA should and will survive.
However, notice how ANY group on the right gets heavy scrutiny. No exposes on Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, National Wildlife, the Humane Society, PETA, etc. All of which have heavy administrative costs and spend only about 20% of their money on their "cause" --- if that. And no one will hound you for more money than they will!

NRA life member. I get very occasional pleas for money, and a great (American Rifleman) monthly. I too am concerned by the amount of money going to the McQueen company and how it appears that North was involved to his own benefit. I will wait for audit and discovery but will remain a member and support whatever house cleaning is necessary but will NOT let media destroy the organization

Fix your problem NOW and focus on 2020. We don´t need the NRA in disarray as the election approaches.

I´ve been an NRA member since the 80´s. My supervisor "strongly recommended" it at annual performance rating time. I´ve been a life member since 2008. I donated a lot (for me) in the 80´s and was constantly flooded with begging letters. A few years after I stopped donating the letters stopped. I rarely get them now.
#15 may be onto something. With 2020 coming up, who wins if the NRA is in disarray?

Until Wayne LaPierre is ousted and the finances cleaned up, the NRA will remain wounded.
LaPierre took over decades ago and has run off all good men (two who are personal friends) who joined the Board of Directors and saw signs of mismanagement back in the late 90s.
As much as I strongly support their work, and will say that LaPierre has done a reasonably good job with the gun rights issues, I think he has also been questionable in the financial department. I will make no specific accusations, because LaPierre has hidden the facts well, but there has been a bad odor for a long time, questions about finances that have been hushed up, not answered.
I have been a member since 1967, Life Member since the 80s, far before LaPierre. And I say this with only the intent that the NRA get better management. I wonder if Marion Hammer is even still alive, she was wonderful, and LaPierre had not yet consolidated his power when she was President.

Who is best centered to protect gun rights in America today, the NRA.
They are not without their secrets, fraud, and criminality, but that will be sorted out soon enough.
But the left is trying to break the gun lobby by dividing and casting doubt on their mission. Do not be deceived about the lefts motives. They have wanted to remove the NRA from the playing field for a very long time.
Wake Up America the left has our gun rights in their sights.

The Left was able to present the NRA as an industry driven pro-gun, pro-gun violence lobby group rather than the grass roots foundation which it truly is (was). The conservative movement in America has too long trusted that being "Right" (in the sense of being logical and reasonable) would be enough to win the day.
When, in fact, the Left has been scheming and plotting and deceiving and creating a false narrative designed to dupe us out of our liberty and our Constitutional Rights.

Also a Life Member for so long I don´t remember...I also belong to the 2A Foundation and NAGR...I sometimes wish they would check their ´join the NRA´ mailers against their already existing roster, but the solicitation emails are different...NRA/ILA ....and they do have great raffles to raise money...and continue attending ´Friends of the NRA´ events.
I will hang with them until I get removed from the earth. If we don´t we will all hang separately...
The Democraps are desperate to relieve us of our guns..we CANNOT let that happen or it will really be ´1984´ or the latest take on it, ´Equilibrium´ recently watched and scary stuff...
Thank God for giving us PDJT.....

I wish Judicial Watch had a 2nd Amendment branch. I´d be happy to send my NRA dues to them. At least they might do something about NY states illegal anti-2nd amendment SAFE Act laws. The only time NRA bothers with NY courts is now when the NY state AG goon is going after their bank on the instructions of the Thug cuomo.

I departed the NRA the same year as Charlton Heston did. And for the same reason as many posters above stated, incessant fund raising. I am now only a ´´spiritual adviser´´ to them.

The left finds a way to infiltrate every great conservative foundation, or charity and turn it into a prog cause. Sorry, but I don´t trust Oliver North either.

#23, if you mean LaPierre, I do not believe for one instant that he is not a solid, true-believer in the 2nd Amendment. I have never questioned his bona fides on that topic. But it has appeared as if there have been financial irregularities, and he has immediately forced out any people who wanted to look closer at the finances.
I do not think this is any kind of a left attempt to harm the NRA, even though I am certain that they would love to do it. I think this is likely a legit housecleaning attempt. I hope that they clean it up and the NRA is then more powerful, with ALL the money going to gun rights, not some being diverted.
