Flyers following Yankees lead and are dumping Kate Smith’s ‘God Bless America’ over her racist lyrics

The Flyers wasted little time in following the Yankees lead. A day after the Daily News reported the Yankees had stopped playing Kate Smith’s 1939 recording of “God Bless America” in the middle of the seventh inning over her racist lyrics, the NHL’s Flyers made the same call. And took the extra step of covering a statue in her honor outside the Wells Fargo Center. “We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization,” the Flyers said in a statement. “As we continue to look

Ever get the feeling you´re outnumbered? Check out Mount Rushmore, which features two direct slaveowners in George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln had slaves in the White House during the War and wanted to repatriate Africans to Africa because in his opinion, they lacked the capacity to live as equals among people of European descent. And surely Teddy Roosevelt is guilty of something. Dynamite the entire thing, replace it with MLK, Rosa Parks, Michael Jackson, and Trayvon Martin, or maybe Oprah and Baraque.

Didn’t Hitler and the Nazi regime do a lot of “cleansing”? That’s what this sounds like.

None of this superficial posturing will change history. None of it will placate the perpetually aggrieved for long.

So she sang an old song so she needs to be hated forever?

That song was not out of line then, was an old song and who knows what she thought of the meaning of it?

Let me get this straight.. Kate Smith sang songs that were popular at the time and were part of the culture and were enjoyed by everyone. Nobody complained that Kate Smith sang the other songs, they just contained antiquated language that someone might construe as racist if they really wanted to look for something to be upset about. The PC police had to come in and ban not just the songs that they considered potentially racist, they had to ban all song that Kate Smith sings just because she had been their singer. This is CRAZY! So much of the past will need to be banned because someone might have potentially said something at sometime that would offend someone.

The song "That´s What Darkies Are For" is no more racist than "Old Man River" from "Showboat". The lyrics are a lament by working class people about their unfair burden of labor in the world. If this song was racist why did the world renowned baritone Paul Robeson also record it? Its no more racist than Billie Holiday´s song "Strange Fruit" which would have been too scandalous to sing in 1931.

At the time Kate Smith sang politically offensive songs they weren´t considered offensive. Al Jolson singing Mammy in black face has always seemed silly to me. But not offensive. It´s just what past for entertainment way back then. There was no problem when Noble Johnson, a black actor, appeared in white face in the movie Most Dangerous Game. There are CDs of Kate singing " That`s Why Darkies Were Born" available. Think I´ll buy one before the purge.

Abbott and Costello first performed their iconic Who´s on First routine on The Kate Smith Hour back in 1938. So we can no longer listen to that skit. I guess we should also hate Abbott and Costello, too, and comedians in general, comedy teams... and the skit appeared on radio so we can´t listen to radio, either. I´m surprised they haven´t already thought of that because of Amos and Andy. Should attack the year as well... 1938 introduced Superman to the world, so he´s racist also. Gone with the Wind... well, that one is obvious. And 1938 is part of the 20th Century, so we must attack the whole century as racist as well... and, by that logic, centuries are simply measurements of time devised by humans so we have to realize that all of human history is racist. Guess we just need to nuke the entire planet, wipe ourselves out, and hope God allows life to arises from the nuclear ashes in a few million years... somehow, though, I bet, the life that arises from those ashes will be racist, too.

Why is lyrics to a song honoring America a racist song? Who writes lyrics to a song with ´racist overtones´?
For what it´s worth, I love "God Bless America" and I love Kate Smith singing it.
My grandmother used to watch The Kate Smith Show decades ago. That is where I learned to like her and the song "God Bless America."
When Jesus walked this earth, he changed water into wine. Today, everything we Americans love is being turned into something racist.
What Jesus did was a miracle. What is happening today is not a miracle but the tearing at the threads of patriotic cloth that made America great.
What can we do? Get out the vote for President Trump for 2020.

There have been some wonderful black entertainers, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Al Hibbler and many more. Kate Smith was "Americas Sweetheart". She was blessed with a beautiful voice and made a major hit recording of Irving Berlin´s God Bless America. Irving Berlin wrote the song long before we ever heard. When contacted by Kate or on of her associates, he dug it up out of his archives. I´m sure glad he did. It, to me is our second National Anthem.

Well that´s it. The Flyers will never win the Stanley Cup again. During their Stanley Cup wins, playing Kate Smith´s version of "God Bless America". Not only did it fire up the fans, but the players came out with fire in their eyes and played like it. When the Red Army´s hockey came to North America to play NHL teams about 40 years ago, the Soviet team ate up every NHL team they played until they got to Philly. They played Kate Smith and the Flyers mauled the Soviets to the point they didn´t want to come out and play the second period. The NHL told the Soviets, "If you don´t come out and finish the game, you don´t get paid." The Russians came out, got schooled, and limped their way back to home after losing 4-0.

I don´t think these two teams have figured out their own bigotry and antisemitism yet. Irving Berlin was one of the greatest songwriters in the history of our country. He loved America, and to say his music was racist is just ridiculous. I mean come on, white with foam?? What color do these people think the surf and waves are? They aren´t black, brown or yellow. They are white. Get over it. I note the media is ignoring the antisemitism as well.

Now how about that name Yankee? That could be construed as a symbol of racism/slavery as well. And Flyer used to be what Hollywood movie studios called gay men back then. These teams need to watch out how much trouble they want to borrow.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., joined the legion of “Game of Thrones” fans disappointed by the show’s finale. “I’m sad,” said Ocasio-Cortez in a video of the two legislators posted to Warren’s Twitter account Tuesday. “Disappointed about it.” “I was just really… meh,” said Warren. The pair bemoaned the arcs of the female characters who seemed prime to rule at the end of the series. Instead, one “went crazy” and the other settled for ruling only part of the continent. The lawmakers were not alone in their distaste for the series’ treatment of its female characters

The political zealotry of the federal judge who ordered ten years’ worth of Donald Trump’s financial records be turned over to the House Oversight and Reform Committee chaired by Elijah Cummings has been revealed with a highly unusual provision of his order. (snip) The remedy for potential political bias in a federal judge’s ruling consists of the appeals process, with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia and ultimately the Supreme Court able to reverse such a decision. But Judge Mehta’s order forbids this

After taking President Trump's endorsement to get himself elected senator, Mitt Romney has made quite a show of turning on Trump. The last two incidents have been notable: He declared GOP "maverick" congressman Justin Amash "courageous" for joining the Democrats and calling for the impeachment of President Trump in the House. He also made this ad hominem attack on Trump over the weekend, playing Puritan for us: On Sunday, Romney was back at it, attacking the president's character. "I think he could substantially improve his game when it comes to helping shape the character of the country," Romney said on CNN.

Here’s a revealing — and disturbing — new poll that bears on the current gang fight among leftists for the soul of the Democratic Party and its 2020 presidential nomination. See Also: ESPN chief: You’ll never guess what our viewers want to hear nothing about Almost half of Americans in a new Gallup Poll believe that socialism would be a good thing for the United States to have. Almost half (43 percent). A good thing. Democrats like Bernie Sanders driving that party to the left may be on to something for a winning theme in next year’s vote. Today, a bare majority (51 percent) says socialism would

There’s no longer any way to avoid it: “Something strange is going on at Fox News.” “Something strange is going on at Fox News. Something very strange,” President Donald Trump told a throng of thousands at his Pennsylvania rally last night. “The audience showed their agreement by booing Fox News.” (The Blaze, May 21, 2019) According to the Blaze "President Donald Trump
Jerry Nadler’s cynical, cowardly show 19 replies

Jerry Nadler was at it again Tuesday, waxing indignant about former White House counsel Don McGahn’s refusal to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. It’s all a show, meant to keep old news in the headlines, and to appease the large “Impeach Now!” wing of the Democratic Party without actually doing anything. Everyone on Judiciary knows perfectly well that Congress can’t compel testimony from top presidential advisers except in the most extraordinary circumstances: The chief executive’s right to frank, confidential discussions with his staff is well-established. So Nadler’s bluster about how he’ll “go to court to secure” McGahn’s appearance is just noise for the cameras. Then again, that’s all

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-NY, accused the White House of "intimidating" former White House Counselor Don McGahn from testifying on Capitol Hill and said it was becoming "more and more difficult" to not consider President Trump's impeachment on Monday night. Nadler told CNN anchor Chris Cuomo that his committee will hold McGahn "in contempt" for not complying with the subpoena and will take the battle to court. "You are dealing with a lawless president who is willing to go to any lengths to prevent testimony that might implicate him, that does implicate him," Nadler said. Nadler expressed that Trump's "lawless behavior"

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday started a two-week test transporting mail across three Southwestern states using self-driving trucks, a step forward in the effort to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology for hauling freight. San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. A safety driver will sit behind the wheel to intervene if necessary and an engineer will ride in the passenger seat. If successful, it would mark an achievement for the autonomous driving industry and a possible

There's a recurring theme in American science fiction where the country loses its way, endures some horrible but cleansing disaster, and then rediscovers the blessings of liberty. You'll find it in Robert Heinlein's "Future History" stories, where the Crazy Years -- a period of rapid technological advances, decaying social norms, and mass psychosis -- leads to the backlash of a religious dictatorship. The Prophets regime is eventually toppled by a liberty-loving group dedicated to individual rights. The theme is even more pronounced in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, where a socialist regime puts the country into another Great Depression, only worse. The country's capitalists
