The cause of the massive blaze that engulfed the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is under investigation, authorities said Monday as firefighters continued to work to save the world-famous landmark. But some experts said the extensive renovations going on at the historic building could have contributed to the fire. There is a history of churches, synagogues and temples going up in flames while under repair, said Glenn Corbett, an associate professor of fire science at John Jay College in New York. Notre Dame, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, has a wooden roof.

Is this the kind of story laying the groundwork for a cover-up? Let´s hear what investigators have to say-any structure incorporating wood is ´vulnerable´ to fire. In light of the recent string of church burnings let´s leave ALL possibilities on the table-if the evidence doesn´t support it then we can discount it. An dyes, I do believe it is possible that some Muslim extremist took advantage of a situation where scaffolding offered access to out of the way portions of the building where a fire could have been set with a poor chance of being extinguished. But let´s see what the facts are before discounting anything.

Experts are like termites. The woods are full of them. And they all come out when events like this occur.
I had read description of the cathedral that said the roof was lead. We were also told that the fire began “in the attic” where The Forest - the name given all the roof support structure, each beam made from a single tree - was located. It would have supported the lead roof sheathing in that part of the cathedral. When that wood became engulfed, the lead roof sheathing would have collapsed.
The top portion of the spire was also lead, built on a wooden base. The wooden base became engulfed; the lead spire toppled.
So there are lots of stories about the cathedral. Everyone’s an expert. Best to wait for all the stories to shake out. There can only be one that is true.

The article say that there were 2 fires, one in the roof the other in the north bell tower. Coincidence?

Ditto #1
FTA … "The fire started up near the roof top, while another fire started in the north bell tower," Picaud told NBC News. "All damage seems to be up high and did not go into the lower part of church or touch the organ or stained-glass windows."
2 accidental fires?

#6: There have been many news stories about the problem. For instance, there was one in Time in 2017. The French government (which actually owns the cathedral) knew all about it. That´s why the restoration work was being done.
There are two major problems:
(1) The structure is built of limestone. The air pollution during the 19th and 20th Centuries, especially from coal burning but also from motor vehicle fumes, put a lot of acid into the air and attacked the stone. On top of that, yesterday´s fire probably calcined some of the limestone, compromising its structural integrity. The calcined stone will have to be replaced.
(2) Without that wooden roof (and the wooden scaffolding) the fire wouldn´t have spread so fast and so catastrophically. When they replace the roof beams they´d do well to use steel or maybe aluminum. (Not authentic? Who cares? No one inside the cathedral sees the roof, and the new terracotta roof tiles will conceal the new beams.) Of course they´ll have to make sure the weakened walls can hold up the weight of the new roof. That means carefully checking the condition of both the walls and the flying buttresses.
Over the centuries, but especially since the work done in 1844, a lot of shoddy restoration was done. Inferior building materials used included cheap limestone, concrete, and even polyvinyl chloride(!) rainspouts to replace the dissolving gargoyles. Hopefully they´ll do better work in the coming decades.

Why isn’t arson being talked about? It certainly is a possibility and they HAVE to be considering it. With all the church vandalism going on in France, Notre Dame is the big prize. Old Shepherd and Laredo Neil at Fox will have egg on their faces if it turns out Muslims were behind this, and not a worker’s carelessly discarded cigarette.

Rush had it right: if there had over 1000 incidents of arson and vandalism of black churches and cemeteries in the last two years (as there have been of Christian and Jewish religious sites in France, and then the biggest, most iconic African-American church in the country suddenly goes up in flames under mysterious circumstances, would we be being admonished by CNN, MSNBC, even Fox, etc., not to ´jump to any conclusions´? Heck no! They would be the leaders of the conclusion-jumping, and have already figured out how to pin it on Trump, the NRA, and ´white nationalists´, and be working on how Justice Kavanaugh was in on it too.

Yes, no doubt. All cathedrals are very vulnerable to fire....with so many Muslims running loose in France.

"vulnerable," experts say. Would that be "vulnerable to muslim attacks"?
The French have lost their own nation. What is it... 20 percent plus muslim? Non-assimilating muslim.

#8 the roof is not terracotta tiles, it is sheathed in copper sheeting. But I agree, steel or aluminum primary rain cap structure makes more sense replacing with wood.
Where the interior stone vaulting has collapsed, it is critical to quickly get temporary cross bracing across the openings. The flying buttresses put lateral loads on the tops and middle of the walls. The buttresses react the outward loads of the roof vault arches to the ground. With missing
roof vault arches pushing outward, the structure balance is lost in those areas.

I´ll wait for all the facts before blaming the fire on anyone. I don´t want to go off half-cocked like our media does. I also had not realized that there was so much wood in the structure.
The French authorities at least have to consider terrorism. The question is, if they find it was one of our lovely members of the ´Religion of Peace´, will they cover it up?

Re #15, I here that the roof was sheathed in lead:

The statues of the apostles on the roof were copper. They were removed a month or so ago.

I have always wondered if 9/11 was deliberately made visible to millions because previous acts of terrorism were simply explained away by officials as accidents. They could claim no such thing on 9/11. With their history, it is idiotic not to suspect that Islam was involved in the Notre Dame fire.
