Survey after survey shows young Americans are increasingly unhappy, depressed, and even suicidal. They are America´s future, and their outlook makes that future look grim. What´s the matter with kids today? Recent years have seen a rise in Americans 12 to 25 saying they are unhappy. Since 2012, the proportion of 8th and 10th graders who tell the Monitoring the Future survey that they felt unhappy has crept up from 13 percent to 18 percent. In roughly the same time, the proportion of 18- to 25-year-olds who say they are unhappy has risen from 11 to 17 percent, according to the

History indicates to us that the easier life is, the less we have to struggle to achieve the basics of life and become successful, the lower the quality of the final product. Let the miserable little twits find out the hard way and a couple of generations of 1984 style living may eventually produce a generation of people who deserve to be here in this wonderful country.

I would suggest that the extreme progressivism of education is also partly responsible. It paints the picture of a dark and unfair world. It tends to tear down family and social involvement or at least not encourage it.

To resort to cliches...children used to be seen and not heard. They are now the tail that wags the dog.

When you´re lied to the entire time you go though school these days and have been brainwashed into believing our country and its leadership is villainous...the chances are pretty good that you´d be unhappy. Add that your college degree in "women´s studies" doesn´t qualify you for a job mowing lawns and all the debt you rolled up getting your worthless degree...you´re miserable. Throw in that you have no idea which gender you are...and you´re probably suicidal.

I believe there is a huge spiritual disconnect with our young people as well. The absents of God in their lives equals no purpose. We are eternal beings and it says God has placed that fact in our hearts. Only Christ can fill that void.

Also, it’s the first or second generation that’s worse off than their parents. Trillions of dollars in debt will do that.

#13, you nailed it. If they had some sense of God in their lives as the source of everything good, the anti theological notion popular in atheist circles that man is in charge of his own destiny would not be intimidating. Once faith is stripped from a person´s life whether involuntarily or not, that person will succumb easily to communistic manipulation into loss of liberty, freedom of choice both of which raise the misery index hugely. Turning one´s back on God or being denied knowledge of God is a crime against man not to be tolerated.

Apparently they are so foolish as to believe the lies about MMGW that they have been told. That is really sad, since it is just a hoax put out by the extreme left and communists to justify taking away all our freedoms.

This older American is depressed. Why? I could name a million things but it mostly all comes down to what the left has done to our society and government. We have lost...
- spirituality and religion
- decency
- politeness
- respect for others
- real music and true musical talent
- a lot of our freedom
- most of the honesty and accountability in government at all levels
- basic education and teaching children HOW to think for themselves--not what to think.
- teaching reason and logic
- comedy and a sense of humor
- true artistry in theater and movies
- and much, much more...
Remember when you never heard profanity in public? Now, that is all you hear...everywhere. You can´t avoid it now.
If I were growing up now, I wouldn´t feel there was much of a future either. The left and the corrupt have sucked life out of everything good...and the saddest part of it all is we all let it happen (just like the frog in the slow boiling water). We should have stopped the trend decades ago. Now how do you fix it? It´ll only get worse before it gets better

A lot of great comments as usual.
They have no purpose in life. Everyone needs to be a little broke, a little hungry, and a lot humble to get through life.
Know any kids with a hobby ? They have to be entertained every moment of their lives. No respect, no religion, no education.
Bring back the draft. Let them see the world on our dime so they can appreciate this country. When Boomers die off, the country is gone.

It´s simple...they grew up with mommy and daddy giving them everything. Now that they are out in the world they suddenly realize a few things.
1. They have to work for a living and are peeved everything isn´t free anymore.
2. They don´t know they were indoctrinated in Schrewl and now they are idiots...and they still want all the free stuff.
3. Their politics is at a third grade level...
Bottom line they are all whiney crybabies ... you guessed it, no more free stuff!

I am amazed by the fact I cannot go into public without hearing an 18 to 25´er spout f***, s**t, and "like" every other syllable. And I find this in the conservative, well-to-do world in which I´ve otherwise found refuge. It´s gotten to the point I find myself getting up from my table in restaurants to ask for more civility from surrounding tables for the benefit of the children and the elderly in the area.

Every comment so far is right on. Fundamentally, all are symptoms rooted in the denial of God and the lack of purpose in their lives. 2 + 2 will never equal 7.

I can tell you of my own personal experience with my youngest step daughter. Whether it´s representative, well you´ll have to make up your own mind. She decided she was "depressed" and her truly idiot mother took her to a therapist who promptly put her on anti depressants. Turns out her dose was 3 times what it should have been and she tried to take her own life. It was touch and go for a day but she pulled through. She still takes those d**m pills but seems to be doing better.
I think the emphasis on being "happy" is a real problem. Even my husband will says he just wants he kids to be happy. I´ve asked him to explain that and he has no real answer. I read an article, probably here, that was about having a worthwhile life and I believe if more emphasis was on worthwhile, rather than happy, we´d all be better off.
That and social media, like #8 said.

I find it truly disturbing that so many of the older generations largely give themselves a pass and accept no responsibility for making the world a crummier place for the upcoming generations.
If you had children, did you remain married and faithful? Or did your own selfishness drive you to break up your family?
Did you dabble in drugs? Work as hard as you could? Stay in your church? Treat your own elders with respect?
Did you work hard and provide for your own financially stability? Or does the government take care of you?
Were you involved in the education of your children? Or did you blindly hand them over to the state?
Kids haven´t been here long enough to screw up the world. The older generations did it for them and it´s a freaking tragedy.
