Iranian weapon debris, blown to pieces or mechanically crippled, keeps dropping from the Middle East sky.For that, we can thank heat-seeking satellites, military-grade malware and radar-jamming software, all made in America. New technology laser weaponry has also been deployed against Iran as part of Operation Epic Fury,[snip] A US Navy destroyer vessel off the coast of the Middle East nation is fitted with the new weapon, which appears to be the High-Energy Laser with Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance (HELIOS) system[snip]a state-of-the-art device with a steerable head, able to concentrate a “intense, tightly focused beam” of energy

Could we hear from all of the people that said SDI would never work? You know, the ones who called it "starv wars," thereby defaming two good ideas.

Developmental technology, but, after a fashion, within limitations, it works.

We are looking at the future. Let's hope we can continue to stay in front in this deadly game.

I used to drive past the area where they developed and tested those things on White Sands. Always wondered if they really worked. Guess so.

This is one big reason why Russia and China are sitting this one out. They are gathering Intel on the use of and characteristics of our weapon systems. The Russians are usually at least 10 years behind the U.S. technology, and China can’t even field a reliable weapon system without going back to their 1950’s Soviet hand-me-downs and clones. We are witnessing something historians and strategists will talk about 100 years from now. Soak it all in!

Oh, and by the way, Democrats owe Ronald Reagan and Dr. Edward Teller a huge apology for their snide often harsh criticism of the “Star Wars” aka “Strategic Defense Initiative@ of the 1980’s. The fruits of this innovation are finally on display for the world to see. Sit back and watch as peace begins to break out around the world.

Won't it be great when Lasers make ICBM's useless.
We will save Billions of dollars on keeping these things in silo's.

Re #8, I used to work for a major weapons manufacturer, in classified weapons work for 35 years. I once was in a large meeting with "top dogs" in the company, and after I had given my presentation, sat down to listen to the rest. About 1 minute into a presentation by a very senior engineer....the VP stopped him and said, I think that a few of our meeting members aren't cleared at the appropriate levels for this presentation.
I and two other engineers were asked to please leave the meeting.
I won't comment on what I saw and heard in the first part of that meeting other than to say, it was in the early 90s and we had plans going forward to build some of that "impossible Star Wars" stuff...for real. Money got pulled. Maybe the tech might not have been quite ready for some of it but at least one kind of space weapon which used some of what we built would likely have worked as advertised.

I defer to #11 on many things. We have some shared background, but he has some pretty interesting stories that I know nothing about. The meeting sounds like the kind of meeting I'm re-reading about in Tom Clancy's Cardinal on the Kremlin.
Parenthetically, a friend of mine was working at Raytheon during the first Gulf War, and she still treasures her Skud Buster t-shirts.
Lastly, #8 is exactly right. A lot of good people were defamed and some lost lifelong friendships over SDI. Science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein was one of the earliest visionaries in the fields of space exploration and the military of the future. During the 1980s, he was in meetings where his close friend Arthur c Clarke disparaged SDI, then known as High Frontier. Heinlein pointedly reminded him to mind his own business for his own country. It caused a rupture in their friendship that lasted till close to RAH's death.
