U.S. Central Command officials have confirmed that airstrikes launched on Iran on Saturday involved the first combat use of the U.S. military’s new autonomous kamikaze drone. The Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System, or LUCAS drone, was launched as part of Operation Epic Fury, which targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps command and control facilities, Iranian air defense capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and military airfields, CENTCOM officials announced. [snip] Built by the Arizona-based SpektreWorks, the drone, which can be launched via catapults, rocket-assisted takeoff and mobile ground systems, is a spinoff of the company’s FLM 136 target model

Comments:

Twice the warhead weight of a Hellfire, and 100 times the range for $35K total cost. Heck of a deal.

As to the "copy of a Shahed drone" baloney. Not really, if you know any history of aeronautical design. The first "successful" (ish) aircraft of this basic configuration (no horizontal tail, swept leading edge, pusher propulsion) was the Messerschmitt Me-163 rocket powered interceptor in late WW2. It was powered by a rocket motor which used hypergolic fuel and oxidizer which essentially exploded when mixed in the combustion chamber. The remaining amounts of fuel and oxidizer in fuel tanks, which were literally the side consoles in the cockpit, would sometimes mix in a botched gliding landing ( only minutes of rocket power, but literally vertical climb) would cause the craft to disappear in bright flash....with the pilot. So the "successful....ish". That configuration is known for high efficiency of flight, which leads to long range. It has been used by many aero designers who are looking for long range. Our B-2 is another example, and our first USN submarine launched 1950s cruise missile, the Regulus, was a similarly tail-less swept wing design. Note that ours is a lot lighter, too, which adds to range.

In the large quantity buys that the USN and USMC have done, Hellfire missiles cost around $45K, incredibly cheap for a missile, but if you buy less quantity and different features....you can get the $213K that the US Army pays for their fancy versions with longer range and many seeker options. Either way, 500 miles with a 40 lb warhead, versus 5 miles with a 18-25 lb warhead....quite the difference. Both are needed, but just for comparison purposes. Neither can do the mission of the other one, in general.

Re #3, without a warhead, which I'm pretty certain you can't have, I imagine you might be able purchase one for less that a good used pickup. Might be a LOT of paperwork, though.

Additional narratives have revived allegations of Venezuelan interference in U.S. elections, including claims from a former Maduro regime official about a “narco-terrorist war” against the United States.
