Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is bringing cursive back to schools.
Shapiro signed a bill requiring a cursive handwriting curriculum in all Pennsylvania public schools, Wednesday. The bill, introduced by Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Dane Watro, was co-sponsored by three Democrats and fifteen Republicans. “I’m definitely rusty, but I think my penmanship was okay!” Shapiro’s office wrote on Facebook, posting a photo of Shapiro’s cursive signature.
Pennsylvania’s former education secretary, Khalid Mumin, “said cursive instruction is not vital for public classrooms,” according to Penn Live Patriot-News.

This is Shapiro signally he’s “3rd way” and not looney left, like Bill Clinton coming out for school uniforms 30 years ago. Cursive is “traditional” but meaningless. The only reason cursive ever existed in the first place had to do with writing first with quills and later fountain pens. Don’t fall for this phony baloney conservative feint.

From former teacher: I had to print lesson material on board. Students could not read or write in cursive. Students printing notes took twice as long, and slowed down lessons. Just another way schools dumbed down the lessons.

Khalid Mumin. I'm guessing he's "not from around here."

Perhaps Khalid Mumin would find that an X would be a suitable signature for a legal document.

Whenever I send a card to teens these days, I have to remind myself to print my message rather than write it as a I normally do. This happened after I saw a teen ask his mom to read him what I had written.

Let's see. Our r k extricate and gas rates are going through the roof, and Shapiro is worrying about cursive? Just like him signing into law "The Crown Act," that makes it so you can have whatever whacked out hairdo you want, and employers can't say anything. Some real accomplishments there, guv.

Did he get special permission from the teacher's union to do that?

I was taught cursive in school. Never was very good at it. Since everyones handwriting is a little different, some are very hard to read. Just last night I was trying to read a 200 year old contract and while the calligraphy was beautiful, I could only make out about one of three words. Whoever invented the typewriter is on my free beer list.

But can the students even read printed words?

Although tempted, I did not bother to google an image of "Khalid." Would you take the word of someone named "Khalid"? Does the name "Khalid" carry any gravitas? Would you be alarmed if someone named "Khalid" moved in next door?

Shapiro is a typical "moderate" Democrat: A big fat "Zero" on anything important like illegal immigration or "gender affirming" mutilation of minors. A few days ago an Amish family was wiped out by an illegal trucker who got his Commercial Driver's License from Shapiro's DMV.

RE": "Khalid Mumin, “said cursive instruction is not vital for public classrooms,” according to Penn Live Patriot-News." IMHO, it most certainly is! It is still taught in most private schools. Why was it eliminated in public schools?
Without cursive, our kids cannot read any document produced before the typewriter became widely used, including personal letters, wills, government records or correspondence, deeds, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. Any and all of it could be changed, block printed, and the originals destroyed. Readers would not be able to compare or understand the original documents. History in the hands of the malevolent disappears.
Almost everyone modifies their writing style later in life. But by all means, kids need to learn both. Why would educators promote anything that makes them more ignorant and dependent on technology?

It's important for learning letters, reading and most important, understanding that sometimes WORK is required to actually learn something. This AND a weed track for every moron, discipline problem who can waster everyone's time in reform school. A decent, unwoke curriculum, and a kid who wants to learn might have a chance. Oh, and parents who ruin their children by being slobs.
Mocking cursive is a quick indicator of how lazy and selfish someone is who can't be bothered to investigate why cursive is important. Given how far our society has fallen, it is understandable, but not an excuse. Kids are not tiny adults, and you aren't the center of the universe.
