German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday, where he alerted attendees that the "old world order is unraveling at a breathtaking pace." Merz said the "pole position" of the United States is being challenged by Russia and China. New world of 'great powers' is 'not a cozy place' "We have entered an era of great power politics," Merz said. "The new world of the great powers is founded upon power, strength and when necessary, force. It is not a cozy place."

The EU, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are unraveling. Trump will push their leaders off the stage, before he is done. Wokism is not a model for running a country.

Protect what? With European birth rates chronically below replacement, the prevalence of nihilism with attendant loss of existential meaning, the infantilization of adults caused by a century of devious and rapacious communists/socialists, the volcanic rise of Islam and an overall rejection of the faith of the West, what is there worth saving? Is the meaning of life summarized by the word “cozy”? Not for Americans. Merz is right. The world will not be “cozy” much longer. And the only traditional European ally that has remained anywhere near fighting trim is the same U.S. to which he condescends. How ironic that a German Chancellor complains of his country being forced to do the bidding of superior powers.

In his ramblings, whether he meant to or not, it sounds like Merz was saying that Trump was right! Things are changing and it is about time that Europe started paying for their own defense. They needed to stop being so weak. They need to stop making stupid decisions related to energy and being reliant on Russia for oil and gas. They were warned and got hurt feelings. Tough love.

It's pretty funny that the EU's woes are being caused by ... the EU and it's moronic policies. In its insistence on chasing dogma and unproven climate policy to the collapse of its economies, it makes itself helpless. Trump has stopped the US assuming the world's mounting debt (because of their foolish policies) through inequitable trade policies. That is putting the screws to the EU. Merz says they need to pick up more of their own defense costs. Sounds good. With what money??? Their economies are stagnant or collapsing due to their poor management. The same for supporting Ukraine. With what money? With what weapons? Europe has unfortunately been in decline for decades and the bill is coming due.

I am quite ok with Germany not feeling cozy. Most of Europe has changed forever with their open borders policies. Tourism is dying and the people have lost their way of life. America was on the brink of the same before we woke up. The difference is that we are willing to take action and they want to stay cozy and lazy, while they are being overrun.

Seems like the only European leaders (and Canada) who are whining about anything that Trump has said are the liberal ones. Trump hurt their feelings. He is very publicly calling out their failings and saying why. Some, like Canada's Carney double down in stupid and run to China thinking they will hurt Trump. Others, like Merz, are thinking about what Trump said and are thinking he is probably right and we need to get our asses in gear before its too late.

It seems to me that "the "old world order is unraveling at a breathtaking pace" is true. President Trump put an end to American military forces protecting Germany and Europe from Soviet/Russian invasion while Germany and Europe lifts nary a finger, lounges in luxury, takes economic advantage of and sneers at the Americans. This arrangement, in place since the end of WWII, is over, at least until a 'Rat gets into the White House once again. At the same time, as other posters have noted, the European bureaucrats pushing 'Anthropogenic Climate Disruption' (I think that's what they're calling it these days) have hollowed out their industrial bases, their unsustainably low birth rate is wiping out their upcoming generation, and unfettered Islamic colonization is all working together to wipe Old Europe off the face of the earth. IF they get their backsides in gear NOW, they MIGHT be able to save themselves, but if they don't, they are facing what Victor Davis Hanson described as Cultural .... I think his term was 'Erasure'. European culture will be erased and disappear. On this side of The Pond, we are facing many of the same things regarding birth rate, but President Trump and his administration are working to stop and reverse the Islamic colonization, and working to rebuild American energy production and industrial might. Will WE be able to save ourselves, our culture.... that remains to be seen, but at least people in America are doing something to preserve our culture.

Merz is so right, and also in saying it did not begin w the US. While we are smashing things I want to add that imo the Security Council has to be reconsidered because it is a might incentive for members to market their weapons as a subterranean way to buy a Security Council veto. imo this is happening now and explains why a Certain Member with a lot of weapons to sell opposes everything the US does while trying to claim also the privileges of friendship. What it is advertising imo is total shamelessness and the complete unconditional availability of their veto to those who can pay. This is why dictators in Africa buy planes they can't use, imo. JMO

President Trump’s remarks at Davos have caused a chorus of howls. Some of that howling is understandable. But some of it is makes as much sense as howling at the moon. Take the “Board of Peace” proposal. Countries like France and Britain are refusing to sign on to the president’s initiative. They complain that there are countries on the board they do not approve of. And that there is a risk that it could prove a rival organization to the United Nations.

"It'll be forever for Greenland at this point, forever," Trump said about the agreement. He said the agreement would address security issues, as he has argued that the US must own Greenland for national security reasons amid concerns about threats from China and Russia.

Last week, President Trump announced that the United States will acquire Greenland one way or the other. Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark; it is the world’s largest island, with a small population of less than 100,000 inhabitants, mostly composed of indigenous people called Inuits. Because Greenland sits at the intersection of three continents (Asia, Europe, and North America) and is rich in strategic resources, it has immense geopolitical importance. The island is home to one of Earth’s largest uranium deposits. Uranium is essential for nuclear energy production, and it plays a crucial role in supporting nuclear power generation in the United States. Environmental groups oppose its extraction because they

Israel's decision on December 26, 2025 to recognize Somaliland as an independent state sent shockwaves across the Horn of Africa and beyond. Diplomatic pushback from Somalia and concern within the African Union (AU) followed over regional stability and territorial integrity. Somaliland, a self-governing region in northern Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of Somali ruler Siad Barre's military regime. Tens of thousands of people were killed in the late 1980s as Barre's forces pursued rebel groups in the territory. Many Somalilanders argue the union with Somalia was unlawful and had failed, fuelling demands for self-rule and a separate, stable state

In the fall of 1998, I traveled to Denmark to take up my duties as the American Ambassador in Copenhagen. Often referred to as the “Fairytale Kingdom,” courtesy of its native son, Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark is a remarkable country that has been an exceptional ally of the United States for well over 200 years. The Danes have built a nation that combines Viking valor with a deep sense of duty to be one’s brother’s keeper. The admirable character of the Danish people was perhaps best exemplified when it became the only country in Europe to rescue virtually its entire Jewish population through a daring evacuation to neutral Sweden

An autonomous territory of Denmark thousands of kilometers from the US is currently center stage in a geopolitical tussle. US President Donald Trump says it's "unacceptable" that Greenland should not come under US control and has threatened tariffs on any countries who don't fall in line with his plans. While the territory is geographically in North America, its relationship with Denmark means it is culturally and politically European. Meanwhile, citizens and the governments of Denmark and Greenland are doing their best to resist Trump's overtures while Europe, China and Russia assess the importance of the vast, icy island to their interests.

Iran’s supreme leader has now openly acknowledged what the Islamic Republic has spent weeks trying to obscure from the world. In remarks carried by Iranian state media on Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei admitted that “several thousand deaths” had occurred during Iran’s latest wave of nationwide protests, while blaming the United States and Israel for the bloodshed. Protesters, he declared, were “criminals,” “mercenaries,” and mohareb (enemies of God) – a charge that carries the death penalty under Iranian law. For over four decades, the Islamic Republic has relied on a familiar formula for survival. It begins with repression at home, then blames foreign intervention, and waits for the world to hesitate.
