Understanding 'The Warmth Of Collectivism'

"Can a man who’s warm understand one who’s freezing?" — Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn If you want to see the true meaning behind Zohran Mamdani’s phrase “the warmth of collectivism,” take a look at that photo above, taken at one of the Soviet gulag work camps. The cold was unbearable, but the zeks — the inmates — bore it, until it killed some of them. Someone said on X yesterday that “the warmth of collectivism” was inscribed on a sign over the entrance to the gulag at Kolyma, in the Russian far north, but I can’t find any evidence that that is true. It might as well

Comments:

This includes a first-hand testimony of a bit of the evil of the Venezuela regime. With one example it shows how this previously wealthy country became an impoverished and oppressed s***hole.

I was required to read in high school One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovch by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. A short work unlike his great Gulag - easier for a high school student to read and understand.

I got first hand experience of the “warmth of collectivism” in Ceausescu’s Romania for three winters when it was warmer inside the refrigerator than it was in our apartment. And no hot water or gas in our stove.

My brother-in-law (oldest sister's husband) is from Venezuela. Great guy. He's 75 now. Two years older than me. He and my sister just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The remainder of his family who still live in Caracas report terrible living conditions. You think corruption in the US government is bad? Try this - locals in Caracas were stealing animals from local zoos and farms and paid bribes to police to take their animal home and cook and eat after Maduro told the country they don't need to eat. The few times my brother-in-law and my sister traveled there to visit his family over the years never went without drama - pick pockets taking his wallet at the airport, getting assaulted on a hotel escalator, and getting robbed at a grocery store. Yes, they finally learned and stopped going there. It is that bad. Why his relatives remained there all these years is a mystery. But not really - it is where they were born and wanted to live. Nationalism - that's it. Being Venezuelan is all they wanted. But communism sees it differently.

The warmth of collectivism means you burn your furniture during the cold winter. I am amazed that in 2026, there are actually people who believe that socialism works. Perhaps they know it doesn't work, but if they can just be part of the Politburo, it works for them.

In The Mandalorian series, which was pretty good when Gina Carano was in it and the only Star Wars spin off I managed to really get into (it helped that Pedro Pascal was just a suit of armour) The Mandalorian has a repeated catch phrase that sums up the ethos of his people: This is the Way. It means there’s a right way of doing things, an honourable way of doing things, a right and competent way of doing things. The measure of a people is found in the degree to which they apply a code and the strength they show in holding to it.

A history professor who has taught at Harvard for 40 years is publicly calling out the Ivy League school over race-based hiring and admissions policies, a “shocking indifference” to antisemitism, and for its eroding commitment to teaching students about Western history. James Hankins wrote in a Compact Magazine essay titled “Why I’m Leaving Harvard” that his decision was largely influenced by the school’s abandonment of merit in favor of diversity quotas, which he said entirely changed “the way we conducted our affairs,” leaving extraordinary candidates behind if they did not have Harvard’s desired skin color or gender.

Dear friends, family, admirers, and citizens of France and the world, We gather today in sorrow to bid farewell to Brigitte Bardot, affectionately known as B.B., an icon who illuminated the silver screen before she abandoned stardom for a path of unflinching principle. Born in 1934, she burst onto the scene as the epitome of beauty, sensuality, and rebellion in films like And God Created Woman (1956) and Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt (1963), becoming a global symbol of liberated femininity. Yet she walked away from Hollywood in 1973 to dedicate herself to causes greater than stardom—first to the voiceless animals (Snip)and later to the preservation of her beloved France itself.

It was bad enough that ostensibly conservative political commentators Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens both have been the main drivers of a growing divide in the MAGA movement, through their obsession with demonizing Israel and the Jews. It's Christmas Eve, and kids around the world are waiting for the magical moment when Father Christmas, Santa Claus himself, shows up and leaves presents underneath the tree. There's a joy in that anticipation that cannot be described. For British author J.R.R. Tolkien, professor and author, the magic of Christmas took form in the shape of illustrated stories and letters from Father Christmas, each complete with a North Pole stamp designed by Tolkien. The first North Pole stamp cost "two kisses" and was given to Tolkien's three-year-old son, John. The card inside featured a man in a red coat with the caption "Me" and the picture of a snow-covered, domed

The Islamic Republic of Iran is at war with the United States, and has been for a long time. Back in Nov. 2013, as negotiations continued toward what ultimately became Obama’s Iran nuke deal, Iranian political analyst Mohammad Sadeq Al-Hosseini said: “We are engaged in a fierce war with the Americans on all levels.” That war continues to this day, and the mullahs who rule the Islamic Republic have just opened a new front. IranWire reported Friday that “the Islamic Republic has launched what it calls a ‘hybrid warfare headquarters,’” and that this is a major operation, as the staff consists of over 40,000 Islamic seminary students.

Dramatic video purportedly shows the moment an ICE agent opened fire and killed a 37-year-old woman who attempted to barrel her SUV into the officer’s path in Minneapolis Wednesday morning — as the mayor furiously demanded the agency “get the f–k out” of the city. In the footage being widely circulated on social media from varying angles, ICE officers approach a plum-colored Honda Pilot and order the driver out of the vehicle after she blocked the path of their truck. As one of the agents attempts to open the door, she quickly throws the car into reverse before trying to speed forward in the direction of another agent in her path.

The Pentagon has ordered an investigation into whether the presence of women in 'tip of the spear' combat roles is damaging the military's ability to win wars. In a private online support group leaked exclusively to the Daily Mail, one service member raged against the double standard, writing: 'You mean your guys can't focus on the mission without trying to stick it in... not my problem.'

The Somali-dominated Democratic political machine in Minnesota successfully silenced hundreds of government experts who tracked the huge flow of taxpayer funds through Somali-run businesses, a top Minnesota Republican told a House hearing on Wednesday. Up to 1,000 government auditors, accountants, and program managers were silenced by Democratic threats, Minnesota House Rep. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a presidential memorandum directing the U.S. to withdraw from 66 international organizations, ordering executive departments and agencies to cease participation in and funding of entities the administration says no longer serve U.S. interests. The memorandum follows a State Department review ordered earlier this year under Executive Order 14199 and applies to 35 non-United Nations organizations and 31 United Nations entities, according to the White House. In the memorandum, Trump said he reviewed Secretary Rubio's findings and determined it is "contrary to the interests of the U.S. to remain a member of, participate in, or otherwise provide support" to the listed organizations.

The opposing views on what went down are stark: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the deceased driver, now identified as 37-year-old mother Renee Nicole Good, a “domestic terrorist” and said ICE agents were entirely justified in their actions. Meanwhile, leftists like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz
