The Senate confirmed journalist Sara Carter in a party-line vote Tuesday as the United States' new "drug czar," who will help with the administration's efforts to curb the fentanyl crisis in the country.
President Donald Trump nominated Carter, an investigative journalist who has covered the fentanyl crisis and border security, for the post last year. She will officially serve as the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Carter was confirmed in a 52-48 split. Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul voted against the confirmation.
The journalist has received multiple national awards for her coverage of national security issues, including

The United States Mint released into circulation on Monday the first of five newly designed quarters to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday, and this one focuses on America’s Christian heritage.
The Mayflower Compact Quarter features on the front side two Pilgrims, a man and a woman, under a banner that reads “E Pluribus Unum,” which is Latin for “out of the many, one.”
It also includes the national motto, “In God We Trust.” The other side depicts the Mayflower ship, in which the Pilgrims traveled to the New World in 1620, with the words “Mayflower Compact” and “Liberty” beneath it.

Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT) have balked at the billions of dollars included for refugee funding in one of the nine appropriations bills for fiscal year 2026.
The appropriations bill for the Department of Labor and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) contains $5.69 billion in funding for refugee assistance services, which is three times higher than it was prior to President Joe Biden’s time in office.
Paul, the chair of the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee, said, “The big spenders in Congress are back in DC, hoping to pass a bill that spends billions on refugee benefits despite widespread reports of fraud.

In one of his autopen’s last acts before Joe Biden left office was to pardon Capt. Mike Byrd, the DC officer who shot and killed January 6 protester Ashli Babbitt in cold blood during the protests on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.
As TGP’s Brian Lupo noted, video evidence captured Byrd shooting an unarmed Babbitt without warning as she attempted to climb through a narrow window near a barricaded entryway to the Speaker of the House’s office area in the U.S. Capitol.
Following an investigation, Byrd was cleared of any wrongdoing, although questions remain about the escalation to lethal force without attempts to subdue or detain Babbitt.

California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa died suddenly at the age of 65, GOP leadership confirmed Tuesday.
LaMalfa (R-Calif.), who had represented the Golden State’s 1st Congressional District since 2013, had chaired the Congressional Western Caucus. His cause of death is not immediately clear.
“Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said in a statement. “Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children. LaMalfa’s passing now brings the GOP’s threadbare majority even slimmer

The left-wing candidate in the Democratic primary for Michigan's open Senate seat, Abdul El-Sayed, compared a move to ban Sharia law in Oklahoma to the Trail of Tears.
"You can't understand a Sharia ban without understanding the Trail of Tears," El-Sayed told the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in October of 2022. "You cannot understand the challenges we face today without understanding white supremacy." El-Sayed, whose remarks have not been previously reported, was commenting on a 2010 Oklahoma ballot measure that prohibited judges from considering Islamic and international law in their rulings. He described the initiative as a part of the "history of racism" in Oklahoma

Chinese state-run propaganda outlets are promoting U.S. protests against the Trump Administration’s arrest of Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro. The protests appear to be organized by a Chinese Communist Party-linked financial network in the United States.
After this weekend’s U.S. military-led operation capturing Venezuela’s leader and sending him to the U.S. to be prosecuted by the Justice Department, street protests opposing Maduro’s arrest were quickly organized in New York City and elsewhere by the Marxist revolutionary group known as The People’s Forum, the far-left anti-war group Code Pink, the leftist Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER) Coalition, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation

The only son of captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro called on his countrymen to take to the streets of Caracas to protest his father’s arrest, warning that those who betrayed his family will be found.
The response, though, was muted — with some armed and masked paramilitaries reportedly seen on the streets of Caracas on Monday.
Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra, 35, who was also indicted by the US alongside his father and mother in 2020, remained defiant on Sunday as he claimed that he will do whatever possible to free his parents and oppose US-backed rule in Venezuela.

The deranged hammer-wielding vandal who busted several windows at Vice President JD Vance’s home in Cincinnati is allegedly the son of a prominent millionaire family — and appears to have been going by “Julia” in recent weeks.
William DeFoor, 26, was arrested early Monday after allegedly shattering four windows at Vance’s home. Police said that DeFoor was attempting to break into the home around midnight.
The Vances, who moved into the vice president’s official residence in Washington, DC, after the inauguration, were not in Ohio at the time. It’s unclear whether DeFoor identifies as transgender or nonbinary, but he recently appeared to be posting under the name Julia DeFoor. Cops listed

A new era of common sense and accountability arrives in California on January 26. That is the launch date of the California Post — the brand new, seven-days-a-week digital and print newspaper for the Golden State. The sister publication to the New York Post brings all the hard-charging, plain-spoken journalism of The Post to the West Coast. In announcing the date, California Post editor-in-chief Nick Papps said, “It’s time to hold the powerful to account and start fighting for hard-working Californians. “The California Post will be a game-changer across news, sports, opinion and entertainment,” Papps said. “This is a massive year for California from elections for LA mayor, governor and the midterms to the
