The biggest story of 2025, to judge from the number of people who sent it to me, was this raccoon: (Snip) In case you somehow missed this story: In late November, this raccoon got into a state liquor store in Ashland, Va., by falling though the ceiling. Once inside, the raccoon ransacked the store, leaving a trail of broken bottles... (Snip) ...and apparently consuming a large quantity of booze before passing out in the bathroom next to the toilet. It will be a long time before anything could be as funny as that drunk raccoon passed out next to the commode.

The only thing mildly funny in what I read was about the drunk raccoon. It sounds like Barry is auditioning for another late-night show host. He gave Jimmy Kimmel a run for his money. Do you have to have an operation to remove your sense of humor to be DemoRoid? They certainly don't have much of one, as far as I can tell.

Pretty good and accurate in quite a few spots, but Dave Barry has never been as witty as he thinks he is.

My New Year isn't complete without the Dave Barry year in review. This one wasnt as funny as most simply because it was one party or the other complaining about the other party. I had, however, forgotten about the onesie gotcha. 2025 was a year of eye rolling, heavy sighing and forehead slapping. Anything of consequence was minimized by petty complaining, virtue signaling and performance protesting. Here's to three more years of TDS drama.

I enjoy Dave Barry. I have several of his books. Like any comedy writer, not every joke is hilarious all the time. But he regularly gets off enough zingers to make me smile and even laugh. I need more of that in my life. I can laugh at President Trump--he's bigger than life and has numerous endearing idiosyncrasies, particularly his fondness for exaggeration and self-promotion. His enemies on the left are almost uniformly dour, vicious weasels devoid of redeeming features.

Independent journalist Nick Shirley says he has received death threats and harassment — including phone calls to his family — after releasing a viral video alleging fraud at Minnesota daycare centers. Shirley described the threats during a Dec. 31 appearance on the PBD Podcast, and said he was warned he would be "Kirked," a reference to the September assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The backlash against the YouTuber follows his investigation into several publicly funded Minnesota daycare centers. Shirley claimed the centers appeared largely empty despite receiving substantial state payments.

Independent journalist Nick Shirley humiliated the mainstream media last week by doing something that the media hasn’t done much of lately: investigative journalism. He visited the sites of suspected fraudulent day care centers in Minneapolis, showing they weren’t operating despite receiving more than $100 million in state aid. So CNN decided to one-up Shirley by doing their own "investigative journalism.” Correspondent Whitney Wilde tried calling the daycare centers to ask whether they were fraudulent. I know. Amazing, right? Spoiler alert: they said yes. So obviously, that mystery is solved. Wilde explained in a voiceover in the segment that she "reached out to several of the day cares featured in the now viral video."

It is the season for New Year’s Resolutions, always an exciting time. Diets begin and exercise regimens commence; people commit to look for new jobs, new relationships, new hobbies... addicts try to give up their demons, from candy to alcohol, from television to video games. Everything begins anew. And if you look closely, you can even see it in the news coverage. Look, for example, at the mainstream media coverage of Minnesota’s massive Somali corruption, with attitudes being wholly transformed in real time. There’s a clear process for the media to follow: The mainstream media hides the story, hoping it will go away. Eventually, after enough video exposure,

It's a cult. Islamists aren't here to assimilate. They're here to conquer. Stop worrying about offending the pearl clutchers. Satellite records indicate that there was a sharp uptick in global temperatures in 2023, followed by a steep decline by 2025: [chart] Warmists were ecstatic over the 2023 increase, which they attributed to “climate change.” (It makes no sense to say that a change was caused by change, but put that aside for the moment.) As to the subsequent decline, they were almost entirely silent. It seemed obvious to me that the most likely explanation was the extraordinary eruption of the Hunga Tonga underwater volcano in January 2022. That eruption, unprecedented in recorded history, sent vast quantities of water vapor into the atmosphere. Water vapor is, of course, the principal greenhouse

Nick Shirley has made CNNCBSABCNBCNYT and all of the other leftist media look bad, and now they will try to make sure he pays. Our own Eric Florack captured the essence of what Shirley accomplished just a few days ago: This is most likely the single biggest story ever covered by an independent journalist. In one video alone, Nick Shirley has exposed over $100 million in fraud. I suspect he's merely scratched the surface on the story. Keep in mind, this is right in the backyard

On Tuesday, Times media reporter Benjamin Mullin poured on the sympathy for almost 2,500 words, starting with the headline: NPR’s C.E.O. Was a Right-Wing Target. Then the Real Trouble Started. Katherine Maher has taken an unyielding approach to NPR’s biggest battles — which has sometimes put her at odds with her colleagues in public media. As usual, Mullin and the Times line up the "right-wingers" and avoid the "L word." Start with paragraph 2: Right-wing activists

On the first day of Hanukkah, 2025, the world witnessed another needless, avoidable tragedy — this time an Islamic mass shooting, which erupted on the coast of Bondi Beach, Australia. Twenty-two lives were gunned down mercilessly by a father-son duo of destruction, radical militants who had immigrated to the Land Down Under not looking for a better life, but committed to taking others in the furtherance of jihad. Both tragic and outrageous, Western leaders have been welcoming a massive invasion of violent third-world peasants with no interest in integrating into their host countries. As expected, pundits and commentators pointed out at great length

For years, we have been writing about the fact that China’s dominance of critical mineral mining and, especially, processing is a threat to our national security. It is also a scandal: we have plenty of minerals in the U.S., but we don’t mine them–or, at least, we don’t develop new mines to take advantage of our resources. Because environmentalists–the Democratic Party–won’t allow it. Thus, we have abdicated control over our economy and our children’s future to the Chinese Communist Party. This chart, from a 2022 Power Line post, tells the story: To learn much more, check out Mission Impossible, by Debra Struhsacker and Sarah Montalbano. Happily, there are some Democrats,

Minnesota’s welfare fraud scandals dominate the national news, and calls are rising for Governor Tim Walz to resign. The Minnesota Star Tribune, a longtime DFL mouthpiece that is now run by a former Walz cabinet member, is doing its best to fend off criticism of the Walz regime. Toward that end, its “reporters” are desperately looking for a way to discredit the Nick Shirley video of Somali day care centers that has been seen by more than 100 million people. Deena Winter, a Star Tribune reporter, evidently was assigned that task. In the Shirley video, he has a colleague who is identified only as “David.” Winter apparently thought

Considering Disney’s immense success with theatrical releases throughout the year, their decision to pull the plug on one of the most recent movies was more than a bit surprising. The U.S. Postal Service has updated its rules to clarify that postmarks may not match the date mail was deposited, a shift stemming from network overhauls that could complicate deadlines for tax filings, ballots, and legal documents. The change, which became effective on December 24, adds a new section to the Domestic Mail Manual stating that “… while the presence of a postmark on a mailpiece confirms that the Postal Service was in possession of the mailpiece on the date of the postmark’s inscription, the postmark date does not inherently or necessarily align with the date on which the Postal Service first accepted possession of the mailpiece.”
