Robert Redford, the leading man with the golden-boy looks who won an Oscar for directing “Ordinary People” and later became a godfather for independent film as founder of the Sundance Film Institute, has died. He was 89.
Cindi Berger, chief executive of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, confirmed the news to Variety.
“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Berger said in a statement. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

Great actor, director, and producer, as well as founder of the Sundance Film Institute. Paul Newman, in casting Redford as Sundance in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, knew the role would make him a star. And so it did. Great career. Rest in peace.

In his youth he was quite handsome. He sure made a lot of money. Not sure I have any further opinions.

He created many wonderful film moments and, of course, was breathtakingly handsome in his day.
I worked across from the Plaza and was just yards away when he and Streisand filmed their emotional scene at the entrance. What a treat!

His best movies were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and similar roles. He also had a small role in A Bridge Too Far. Although liberal he had disdain for Hollywood and its ilk and sought refuge in rural Utah.

I loved him in The Natural, The Sting, Jerimiah Johnson, Three Days of the Condor and The Great Gatsby. I can't help but notice that on conservative sites, people are saying nice things about him and his acting. There's no nastiness at all.

Definitely a good actor, some say great. RIP Robert Redford. Your talent on the silver screen will be missed even more sorely now. Consequently, many consider "The Sting" to be one of the greatest films of all time, for very good reason too.

He was an unrepentant leftie, and full of himself. But after “Butch Cassidy”, “The Sting” and “A River Runs Through It” I can’t say anything bad. RIP.

He had a good long life, made some great movies (Butch Cassidy, The Sting, The Great Waldo Pepper, The Way We Were, and so on. Condolences to his family.
As an aside, when "Three Days of the Condor" first came out, I thought it was lefty craziness, but after watching it again recently on TCM, I'm not so sure. It hits a little too close to home these days.

Others have mentioned Redford's role in two of my favorite films ("Butch Cassidy..." and "The Natural"), but the one Redford film I most remember was his role in "The Candidate" (1972) where he played an earnest -- but not very bright -- attorney who ran for a US Senate seat (from California, IIRC) in order to bring awareness to issues. He had witty advisors who trained him in bromides and one-liners that he delivered perfectly. He didn't expect to win, but he did. And at the end of the movie, he's seen having a meeting with his senior advisors after winning where he asks, "What do we do now?" It was over 50 years ago, but a prescient tale about way too many actual politicians who came after him: Mostly very dumb people who need advisors to help them locate their butt cheeks.

'The Sting' has been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. Notably, it ushered in a resurgence of interest in, and and appreciation for Ragtime Music. My favorite line of Redford's character, uttered after he finds Paul Newman's character, slid off his cot, asleep and with his nose squashed against the wall: 'Luther said I could learn something from you....I already know how to drink.' Magic film.

"The Way We Were" is one of my all time favorite movies. Redford even made Streisand tolerable.
I have an ancestor (circa, early 19th century) named Jeremiah which always drew me to Redford's role in "Jeremiah Johnson".

There's an interesting two minute clip of a very young Robert Redford in a Twilight Zone episode titled "You Tricked Me." On the Internet and easily findable by searching for the title.

This makes me sad because his acting and movies made me happy for so long. We watched The Sting in our house about a year ago. It holds up beautifully. We also watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid time ago. I loved both those movies the first time I saw them, and I love them now.
I'm grateful for his life and for all the ways his life made mine better. Thank you, Mr Redford.
