Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, who rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973, has died. He was 84. Turcotte's family said through his longtime business partner and friend Leonard Lusky that the Canada-born jockey died of natural causes Friday at his home in Drummond, New Brunswick. He won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes twice each, most notably sweeping the three with Secretariat to end horse racing's Triple Crown drought that dated to Citation in 1948.

At the ‘73 Kentucky Derby, Secretariat ran each 1/4 mile faster than the previous 1/4. This was a brilliant ride by Turcotte on the greatest horse ever.

I will always submit that the Preakness was his best race. Just like the Derby, dead last coming out of the gate but it was obvious that this time he'd had enough. Broke to the outside going into the first turn, put on a burst of acceleration that has to be seen to be believed (the video is available), passed the entire field around the turn on the outside (NO ONE does that!), went into the back stretch with the lead, and never looked back. Unreal.

So sad that Ron was crippled and wheelchair-bound for so many years. He was the perfect guide for Secretariat. Just imagine - - it has been 52 years since Secretariat broke all three Triple Crown track records - - and still no horse since has come close to any of them. I am still fuming mad - - steam coming from my ears - - that Secretariat was prevented from racing as a 4-year-old because of confiscatory death taxes. I dream - - I fantasize - - about what an even more mature Secretariat could have accomplished - - if the communist taxes hadn't prevented him from doing so,

Race horse jockey--one of the most dangerous occupations in the world. It demands courage to ride those fabulous animals galloping at breakneck speed in a jostling pack. As for Secretariat, he was a blessed freak whose heart was determined to be about a fourth larger than other Thoroughbreds. I've read that Eclipse(1764 – 1789) was similarly blessed. What splendid athletes!
