The Trump economy is delivering for American workers

Employers may have added just 73,000 jobs in the month of July, according to the latest Labor Department jobs report published Friday. But that same survey found that the number of native-born workers with jobs rose by 383,000, bringing the total number of native-born jobs gained to over 2 million since President Donald Trump took office. All this while real wages and household income are rising too. The Trump economy is delivering for American workers.

Comments:

The beneath-the-surface reality of the economy is far more significant than the noise generated by the media's nattering nabobs of negativity. (A hat tip to Spiro Agnew for that colorful phrase.)

I don’t agree that only 5.6 million workers came in under Biden. Though all of them don’t work the gross number I have heard is 11 to 12 million.

Is “Trump derangement syndrome” real? No serious mental-health professional would render such a partisan and derogatory diagnosis. Yet I’ve seen it in my own psychotherapy practice. Patients across the political spectrum have brought Donald Trump into therapy not to discuss policy but to process obsession, rage and dread. Their distress is symptomatic, not ideological.

Google’s online and mobile calendars are no longer including references to Black History Month, Women’s History Month and LGBTQ+ holidays, among other events.  The world’s biggest search engine previously marked the beginning of Black History Month in February and Pride Month in June, but the events do not appear for 2025.  The removal of the holidays was first reported by the Verge last week.  Google spokesperson, Madison Cushman Veld, provided the Guardian with a statement that said the listed holidays were not “sustainable” for their model.

He’s painting the town red. A triumphant Zohran Mamdani took the oath of office to become the Big Apple’s mayor just moments into the New Year — kicking off an uncharted era with a proud socialist at the helm of the nation’s largest city. The 34-year-old Queens state assemblyman was sworn in on a Quran as the city’s 112th mayor — and its second-youngest — by state Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday morning below City Hall Park in a grand, abandoned old subway stop with his wife, artist Rama Duwaji, by his side.

When independent reporter Nick Shirley's explosive investigation into alleged fraud at Somali daycare centers in Minnesota came up for discussion, Tarlov questioned the scope of his findings while missing the point so spectacularly that I felt compelled to highlight it. (Snip)Tarlov actually questioned whether Shirley, working mainly on his own, could have genuinely uncovered the full scale of the alleged fraud. The U.S. Postal Service has updated its rules to clarify that postmarks may not match the date mail was deposited, a shift stemming from network overhauls that could complicate deadlines for tax filings, ballots, and legal documents. The change, which became effective on December 24, adds a new section to the Domestic Mail Manual stating that “… while the presence of a postmark on a mailpiece confirms that the Postal Service was in possession of the mailpiece on the date of the postmark’s inscription, the postmark date does not inherently or necessarily align with the date on which the Postal Service first accepted possession of the mailpiece.”

For generations across the South, black-eyed peas have traditionally been served on New Year's Day. The dish is associated with a "mystical and mythical power to bring good luck" in the year ahead, according to writer John Egerton in his book "Southern Food: At Home, On the Road, In History." For years, Cracker Barrel served as a reliable last stop for displaced Southerners trying to uphold a New Year's Day tradition. If black-eyed peas weren't simmering at home, they could be ordered alongside cornbread and country sides.
