There was just one problem: The IRS didn’t have enough desks to seat them all. And so, many customer service workers learned Sunday that they would not have to return to the office on Monday, after all. The Return to Office (RTO) mandate has been postponed until further notice, union leaders said Wednesday. In the end, the IRS and its employee union evidently agreed that the back-to-office order might lead to long

We wouldn't need so many IRS employees if the tax code and filing for taxes was simplified.

"Fearing a customer service meltdown..." Is there really "fear"? I doubt it. The only reason they need so much "customer service" is because no normal human understands tax laws.

Simple. Start by firing anyone who doesn’t have a desk.

It's not a 'not enough desks' problem . . . it's a 'too many employees' problem.

TV trays or lap desks. New IRS code, per Rush : just send us ALL your money. If there's any left over, we'll give you a refund.

Go to shift work. Two 8 hour shifts with 2 people sharing a workspace. Problem solved. What's next?

At first I was thinking what happened to the desks they had before Covid. Then of course Biden was hiring 87,000 new IRS employees armed to the teeth. Of course they don't have enough desks. These people were hired and never spent a day at the office WT ever loving F? That's crazy.

Gee. Youda thunk that when Biden hired those 87,000 agents, he woulda included a contract for the Hunter and Jim Biden Desk, Chair, Telephone and Computer Co. LLC with adequayr profit for the whole family.
Maybe it's true that Joe wasn't all there in the WH. Senator and VP Sleepy Creepy Crooked Uncle Joe wouldn't have missed that one.

You cannot fault employees when their own managers and agency neglect to make arrangements for them to have a cubicle/desk to use when back at work. Federal employees were told to telework 100% under the Biden Admin distortion unless your job required you to be in an office or working with your customers/the public in person. Of course, these same employees were mandated to get the Covid vaccination or lose your job. And the unions did not fight back on that mandate - funny that. A tip for DOGE - how about going after all the layers of management in the federal agencies: GS-15 managers managing GS-15 lower level managers - good grief.

Dealing with practical fallout from FJB's 80K new IRS agents...
IF it were like when Beelzebubba hired 100K new cops for a propaganda stroke, the desk shortage would clear itself up when their one-year job ended. The 80K new IRS agents are meant to stay on, though...

So the bureaucracy managers "counted" desks, then tells bureacrats not to come in as there aren't enough desks. I hope someeone else counted the desks as well. Recently we have learned there are no bureaucrats that can be trusted counting anything.

The agency went on a hiring spree and didn't make plans for their decision --- it's typical bureaucratic screwup, happens all the time. Get the stay-at-home-workers to bring their own chairs.

I stopped calling the IRS for information when it became clear that their employees did not understand the tax laws.

Re: tax code. Deliberately confusing and complex, to insure employment of hordes of tax preparers and the companies they work for.
Look at the worksheet to determine how much of your SS is taxable. Step forward, step back two steps, take line 6 and add $6000, enter the smaller of line 12 or line 7.
Good grief. We still do our own, saving hundreds every year. Have done this all our lives.

Later in story they admit tens of thousands of new employees were added under Biden. Apparently, most of them have been collecting paychecks while 'working' from home.
