Legendary actor and two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon at their home in the Santa Fe Summit community northeast of the city. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed shortly after midnight Thursday that the couple had passed away along with their dog. While Mendoza did not disclose a cause of death or specify when they might have died, he stated in an interview that there were no immediate signs of foul play.
Immediate speculation centered around the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, but a new report indicates that authorities are investigating their deaths as "suspicious."

On the breaking news, when I heard the dog die it took about 2 seconds before "foul play" entered into the mind.

The deceased dog was found in a bathroom closet. Two other dogs were running around and OK. Yes - seems suspicious.

Terrible news either way, but especially if there was foul play.

Scattered pills. Did Margolis really have to describe the state of her body?

I remember the first time I saw Gene Hackman. It was while watching Bonnie
and Clyde when it first came out. I was spellbound throughout the whole movie!
Warren Beatty and Gene Hackman….two fantastic actors!

Sounds almost staged. Why would the other 2 dogs be running loose and one is dead in a closet? Maybe Hackman died, she didn’t want to live without him and OD’d? The dog thing is weird, though—maybe she knew that particular dog couldn’t handle their deaths, so strange. He was one of my favorites—could have read me the phonebook and I would’ve been thrilled. Very sad but he lived a long full life—she was only 3 years older than me and way too young. RIP.

Re #2, later restated as dog found in 'kennel'.
I still am betting on carbon monoxide, but apparently they had been dead for an extended time, perhaps weeks, so it will be more difficult to determine cause of death.

Do they have disgruntled kids? That was my first thought.

If it was due to carbon monoxide they would say so there's no reason to hide it it's obviously something else.

Re #9, the primary indicator in freshly deceased of carbon monoxide is the easily seen bright red skin color. My bet is that after weeks this is no longer so easily seen, and more detailed autopsy will be required.
This would explain the lack of a quick "monoxide" announcement.

There was a doggy door so two of the dogs could get in and out....Can not imagine how/why/what could lead to a German Shepherd being locked in a closet.
Pretty sad state of affairs that none of his kids were in touch over the last several weeks.

It sounds as if they were very reclusive. The last time they were photographed in public was almost a year ago. It will be interesting to see what the investigation reveals.

If they were dead for weeks, wouldn't the mail pile up? Guessing they weren't dead that long. Waiting for more info.

german shepherds are intelligent-and verrrrry protective. imho, that dog would have to be locked away,
as it would not have allowed murder, w/o taking ...drastic... action, especially if the baddies were unknown.

One of Hackman's daughters said they did not stay in close contact. It had been months since they spoke. That may explain why they were deceased for some time and no one noticed. A sad ending to a great life.

Wife went to the bathroom for painkillers for CO induced headache and passed out. Hackman felt strangely woozy and collapsed. Dog in kennel just went to sleep. Other dogs left via doggy door and recovered. Was there a working CO detector in the home? Ever had CO poisoning? Insidious.

I'm with #16. I think that is the most likely set of circumstances. The spilled pills fits with CO incapacitation while trying to deal with the headaches that come with it.
Why no working CO detectors? Just a serious oversight,it would seem.
We have them in our city home, multiple units, and also in our Colorado mountain cabin. CO is no joke, ordorless, colorless, and completely lethal unless you get out of it soon.
Various kinds of heating system failures will put CO into the home. This is why you MUST have working CO detectors in your home.

They had to deem this "suspicious" in order to be able to get a warrant to enter and searh the house.
I don't beliede this will end up being sensational at all, unless there was a pact.

Didn't his children call their dad often or at all? I called my mother every night just to ask her how her day was and
what was new with her. One of my daughters calls me every morning on her way to work, just to say goodmorning.
I'm a lucky mother.

My first thought was the carbon monoxide theory.
Then my second thought was double suicide, given his advanced age.
Then I read that the bodies were found in separate rooms, which does not support the suicide theory.
I am back to the carbon monoxide theory.
Poster #16 may be right.
The autopsy should reveal the cause of death and then we will know.
