More than 1,000 people have been reported unaccounted for in a devastated North Carolina county where 30 people have already been confirmed dead after Hurricane Helene, officials said Sunday.
Authorities in Buncombe County reported the horrifying toll in an emergency meeting announcing emergency medical shelters and ongoing rescue efforts in areas almost overwhelmed by stormwater.
They also announced a special website to appeal for help finding those unaccounted for — with “more than 1,000 reports so far,” one local official told the live-streamed meeting.

Well thousands evacuated. Give this a chance to settle, then make dire predictions. I imagine most are just fine.

This is truly heartbreaking! Prayers for the NC High Country! While fearless leader Dementia Joe says no more aid for hurricane victims and sends Tennesee National Guardsmen to the middle east and billions to Ukraine it is Americans dead last.

Many structures were just completely washed away. If anyone was in them, they are probably dead.
A lot of bodies will never be found.

Hopefully it's mostly the lack of communication and the wide outage in cell phone service. To say that Asheville was surprised by the heavy flooding is an understatement.

seems like Cooper was not well-prepared - nice of DeSantis to send aid, he who is always over-prepared, thank goodness.

Some time is needed to restore communications in order to locate people. NYP jumped the shark a bit here by putting those 1,000 people unaccounted for in the same sentence as the 30 who were killed.

Prayers for these people. Their impotent governor is not helping. My guess is he will be gone with the wind, come next election.

People who are dodging flooding are likely to be out of contact for a while Downed power lines meaTHIns dead cell towers for a while, too. This is probably way overstated.

Everyone expects hurricane damage in Florida and coastal areas. Many of the devastated areas are in the mountains far from the coasts and places you would ever expect hurricane death and total destruction. Now the roads and highways getting to these areas are also destroyed.

From the appearance of wind and flooding here is southwest Virginia, will be surprised if that estimate isn’t low. Five days without electrical power, open stores, communication other than spotty cell phone, roads washed out or closed by down trees. Even FM radio within a hundred miles of here was out.You were fortunate if you had a generator or kerosene lantern for light, food in the pantry and gasoline in your car. It was worse to the south west of here. Old and ill people without assistance were hard hit.

Joe was on the phone for two hours - from Delaware, don't say he didn't do anything. Harris has a full time job protecting the border.

Another huge problem is that a regular homeowners policy excludes flood coverage. In the past, the government has made low interest loans to those affected with no insurance and I assume they will do the same here. Still, it's just a loan. My in-laws got flooded some years ago, took out a government loan for repairs and paid it back. Maybe the government will forgive the loans instead of letting students off the hook for theirs.
