Bob Newhart, whose unique comedic persona of an observant, yet unflappable, human island of serenity around whom chaos swirled endeared him to multiple generations across several decades, passed away on July 18, 2024, after what his publicist described as a series of short illnesses. Newhart was 94.
Newhart worked as an accountant until he was 30, when he started trying his hand at stand-up. Newhart first came to public attention in 1960 when his album “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” won Album of the Year at the 1960 Grammys. Newhart also won Best New Artist of 1960

Watching anything he did never gets old. Brought back his weekly sitcom after a 4-year hiatus, and 'Newhart' was just as hilarious as 'The Bob Newhart Show'. Funny, funny stuff. RIP, Sir.

From the "Button Down Mind" days, and far beyond, Bob Newhart was an American treasure. His material was always good.
Do you remember the old drinking game played during the Bob Newhart Show called "Hi, Bob!"? Every time you heard "Hi, Bob!", you took a drink. Sometimes people wound up on the floor within fifteen minutes.

#3 - How about your other brother Darryl?
The clips included in the article are great; "The Driving Instructor" and "Abe Lincoln and His Press Agent". The article also noted the ending of the second Bob Newhart show with him waking in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette commenting on his dream about owning an inn in Vermont. Such great memories, not to mention his wonderful appearances on the Johnny Carson show. There will never be another like him.
May God grant unto him the Eternal Rest, and may the Perpetual Light shine upon him. Amen.

I wasn’t able to appreciate Bob Newhart’s comedy until I was in my mid twenties and (finally) finishing up my engineering degree. Something clicked; maybe it was the need to take a break from the hectic pace of lectures, labs and homework. Newhart (the series) provided a perfect oasis. Later he had a perfect part time gig in The Big Bang Theory as Professor Proton, as a former children’s educational TV personality, who the main characters annoyed when he had to deal with them in person. Best part of that show, honestly.
94 is a good run, but the world is sadly less funny this evening.

There was nothing funnier on the Johnny Carson Show than Bob with Don Rickles and Johnny.

My favorite Bob Newhart schtick was a private in a war movie starring Steve McQueen, Fess Parker ... and Bob Newhart!?
"Hell is for Heroes" - a pinned-down squad knows their communications lines are tapped by the Germans. They take PFC Driscoll, a garri-trooper clerk-typist, hand him the handset and tell him to keep the Germans occupied.
They handed Bob Newhart a telephone!!!
An excerpt from IMDB:
Pfc. James E. Driscoll: [fake telephone conversation with "headquarters" to fool the Germans listening in] Temple Red. This is Lt Driscoll.
Pfc. James E. Driscoll: Wh- Don't send them up here. Sir, I have five men in each foxhole now. I don't have room for anymore, sir.
Pfc. James E. Driscoll: Have you tried Charlie company, sir?
Pfc. James E. Driscoll: Oh, I see. Well, sir, there's still a war going on in Japan, you know, sir, you might send them over there.
Love you, Bob.
