Baltimore officials are racing to save up to 20 people who plunged into the Patapsco River after a Singaporean-flagged cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge at 1.30am.
Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency Tuesday morning following the catastrophic collision that occurred at 1.30am.
The ship - the Singaporean-flagged Dali - was 20 minutes into its journey when it slammed into a support column on the bridge.

I would like to know how that video taken in the middle of the night came about! It appears to be taken from the water, and when I saw it elsewhere there seem to be voices in the background.

I wondered about the video too. Rather convenient at that hour. Zhoa will clear everything up.

It's amazing that the politicians will lift a finger to help the victims. Perhaps they hope to steal their votes for the next election.

What an awful way to die. Condolences to the friends and families of the victims. Things like this are blue prints for our enemies. Bridges should be able to withstand a boat bumping into them.

Living in FL it is hard to watch the flaming liberals on the press conference, which did not inspire much confidence that anyone knew what they were doing. Governor DeSantis would have been promising to have some type of bridge open in 2 weeks, like he did in Sanibel, FL. You get what you choose in politicians. DEI may make you feel good and show that you “care” (as Rush always said) but you have to live with Bozo’s in charge.

In the interest of sustainable resources, they will neither reopen the shipping channel nor rebuild the bridge.

fta...The ship was not being piloted by its own crew but by local pilots who are used to specifically avoid accidents.

Reports are that "the ship went dark minutes before the collision". Sabotage of the electrical systems at a critical point? Or just, the crew being incompetent?

It will be difficult to get the truth, as in most incidents of this type. Just like the Uvalde school shooting. Back door just happened to be propped open...now Wikipedia scrubs to read was shut by employee who saw the shooter, but didn't lock ad designed... Now large cargo ship just happens to lose control and scores a direct hit on bridge pillar... Leg...rain.

Looking at the map, there are two alternate interstate routes, a tunnel and a bridge (apparently) farther up the river, closer to the city, which can carry the traffic, so this doesn't shut down a major interstate like I-95.
Just looking at the sat photos, it looks like a lot of residential areas on that northern shore fed by the bridge, lots of waterfront, which sells. Probably a lot of commuters will be very unhappy, have to go north on I-895 up to North Point Blvd (street level, going to be a major choke point), across to I-95 and take it south to get to where they could have just crossed the bridge yesterday.
Traffic is going to be very bad in Bal-mer for a long time.

Not to be too negative, but anyone trapped in a car had maybe 2 and a half hours of survival time in that cold water due to hypothermia, even if they had somehow had a miracle of trapped air that didn't leak.
The bridge went down at 1:30 am, that's 12 hours ago, and there is essentially zero chance at this point that they are saving anyone, sad to say.
Water temp in the Patapsco River is reported as 49 degrees today. Survival calculator says 2 hrs 35 minutes before hypothermia is fatal in that water temp. So, even on the surface swimming or somehow clinging to debris, if in the water, not going to be still alive.

The video came from cameras mounted near the bridge. It is certain that there are no remaining survivors. At this point they are recovering bodies. Horrible

I've seen many posts alluding to some sort of terrorist attack and mentioning the number of camera shots of the accident. There are cameras all over the place around that bridge and focused on that bridge from as far away as downtown Baltimore. It's way there are so many camera angles of this disaster. There are also a number vantage points to view the ship traffic coming into and out of Baltimore. The TV stations use the camera views quite often during weather forecasts. Video of the ship shows it loses power before hitting the bridge and an anchor being deployed to try and slow the ship and force it back into the channel. The pilot immediately radioed that the ship was out of control and may hit the bridge. A large container ship of that size does not steer or stop like a car. Once it lost power, it also lost the ability to steer and reverse engines or power its way out of hitting the bridge. Even when power was restored, the momentum of the ship carried it into the bridge. This wasn't a terrorist attack. It was an accident. I'll bet we find out in the near future, that this ship has a history of problems that were never addressed.

Not just ship momentum, also current direction/speed, wind direction/speed, the video is sped up quite a bit, in real time things happened a little slower.
I cannot tell whether the abrupt(for a ship that size) course change was a result of All Aback Full, (there is a corresponding black plume out the stack), or the result of an All Ahead order in an attempted to gain enough steerage to course correct. Until sternway is achieved the rudder is useless with props reversed, except as braking, but that also allows or compounds Bow Swing. Even with Sternway achieved, The steering is very imprecise, rudder sq ft is infinitesimal in comparison to the slab sides and bottom of a ships surface area. But the Bow HAS to swing much further than the stern, in order to move the MIDDLE of the boat from one side to the other. Many ships that size also have bow thrusters, particularly if they are used in the Panama, St Lawrence, or Suez canals.Which function similarly, and with even quicker response, to having a rudder on the front.

A year or two ago there was a similar ship that lost power int he middle of the suez, and was blown by wind and momentum across the entire canal, blocking it.
6 of the missing seem to be a road crew, out working in the middle of the night fixing potholes.

Boy, the genius Keyboard Kommandos at Lucianne are in full force today, unfortunately.
It was a terrorist attack! The Chinese did it! The Russians did it! The Muslims did it! Isn't it suspicious that there's video of the ship crashing into the bridge! It's Biden's fault! It's DEI's fault! It's Pete B's fault! It's the Dems fault!
How about a nice big cup of you-know-what and some compassion for the victims before all this idiotic bloviating.
Man, some want to drink from the fountain of knowledge, but a big group here is content to gargle.
Watch out, it was the aliens, for sure!
