The Chinese government propaganda newspaper Global Times dramatically predicted a “total collapse of the box office” for Hollywood in the near future as a result of its movies’ “repetitive” plots and “dated” American values.
The latest death knell for the life of the American film industry in the eyes of the Global Times was the dismal theater debut of the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The film, starring 80-year-old Harrison Ford still in the titular role, debuted in both America and China this weekend. The Chinese Communist Party bans most American movies from being featured in Chinese theaters, so studios often

No doubt China would recommend propaganda for movies rather than entertainment. They won't be obvious about it though. Too smart for that.

Compare costs, salaries, and profits to China's "The Great Wall", with Matt Damon, pedro Pascal, and william Deafoe.
Then subtract what the "Follower" yield from prior movies SHOULD have brought it.

I’d rather be sitting in a movie theater watching a bad Indiana Jones
movie than ANYWHERE in godforsaken Communist China!

There are few good sequels and there are even fewer sequels to sequels that are good. You get my drift.

About half right:
“repetitive” plots and
not reflecting 'American values.'

It is a Disney film, so I will skip it for that reason.

Could be. And I'd probably applaud. Movies used to be a major pastime for our family. That has seriously changed. The three or so last movies we saw, we ended up feeling lectured to in ways we disagreed with. Why would we pay for that experience?

Not to stick up for Hollywood, but what exactly are China's values?

I see a few trailers now and then. Ford is way past his sell by date. An 80 year old guy trying to flip a whip. I never liked the Indiana Jones movies. You couldn't pay me enough to go see one.

The ChiComs, like the Dem party (e.g. Diaper Joe, et al.) make the same silly mistake. Diversity, Inclusion, Equality (DIE), Trannie celebrations, public sex shows presented by LHBT+, racial discrimination, infringement of religious beliefs and practices and State sanction abortion on demand including the first 3 years after birth are not American values. Neither is destroying the economy to protect the Earth from Tinker Bell like Global Warming fairy tales. Nor is the use of the Dept of Just-Us, FBI, IRS and a slew of Alphabet agencies implementing 2 tired Just-Us American values. Once Hollyweirded decides that making money beats unemployment, then real American values will turn to movies.

I was with a group of 7 and saw the Indiana Jones movie yesterday. We all liked it very much. (Two in our group were seeing for the second time.) No regrets at seeing it. I'm guessing the majority of the critics who panned this are too young to remember the original IJ movies, and admittedly, nostalgia was a factor in our enjoying it. That being said, it was only the 2nd movie I've seen this year, but this week I'll be seeing a Korean film (often so much better than Hollywood) called Past Lives, as well as seeing the new Jim Caviezel film.

IIRC, he himself admitted this one pretty much ruined the franchise. Allegedly his wrinkled face was fixed by CGI to eliminate most of the wrinkles too. His own ego is so large I don't see how he can fit through a doorway or sit in his helicopter. He could have had a great final movie if he had done what Sean Connery did and accepted a lesser role and let somebody like Chris Pratt play his character's son and so carry on the franchise. But Ford is too arrogant to do that.

Hollywood is depraved, their output is generally sewage; theaters are filled with yakking yahoos & iphone addicts. There are plenty of old movies & TV from before the US became a leftwing moral cesspool. Boycott Hollywood. I'm with the Chicoms on that one.

Not a huge fan of the franchise, but my wife, daughter, and I saw Indy 5 at the matinee last Saturday. I enjoyed it and felt it was well done. Can't even remember the last feature film I watched. Wife and I went to see Sound of Freedom last night. Excellent film dealing with a horrible topic - child trafficking. We ought to support efforts like that one.

The movie is hardly a flop. It is not doing as well as the studio would like, but $80M on the opening weekend is hardly a flop. That being said, if Hollywood does not get its act together and stop lecturing their customers on what a horrible country America is, it will collapse.

Predicting the collapse of Hollywood is over the top. However, the collapse of Disney Studios is more plausible if they continue on their current path.
