Writer David Goldman, who writes as the brilliant "Spengler" at Asia Times, foresees an ending of sorts to the Ukraine conflict, based on the West's inability to supply the resources to keep an extended war coming.
In his latest Asia Times piece, he noted the private thinking going on of people who make up the foreign policy community:
A gloomy assessment of Ukraine’s prospects for victory against Russia emerged from a recent private gathering of former top US soldiers, intelligence officials and scholars with resumes reaching from the Reagan to the Trump administrations.
Short of trained personnel and ammunition, one speaker argued, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky might consider a Chinese peace plan,

I don't see why people are surprised by the idea that the nation that crushed Nazi Germany will eventually overwhelm Ukraine.

But we in the the west have replaced reason with magical thinking. If we only believe hard enough and wave our rainbow flag enough we must Ukraine must win.

Perhaps worst of all there was never anything to win. And the Dim party would have squandered it had there been and had we won it.
Remember the obumbum administration’s repeated assertions that the US was not a world power, just one of many countries?
And now we have a subentity that obumbum warned would f up everything he touches.
These out of touch “big thinkers” (aka whiz kids) would build a skyscraper but can’t be bothered with foundational principles.

Russia always lets their adversaries exhaust themselves, and die.

#4 Right. Russia is protecting its borders which the U.S. is not. Russia will also not fly rainbow flags.

fta: "Russia was just so much bigger than Ukraine in terms of manpower and resources and money and alliances with other big powers -- such as China and India."
Something a great many of us have known all along.
The Elites won't care however. They can just set up their money laundering factory in some other vulnerable nation state once Russia gets into Ukraine.
Note to those gullible souls still in the dark: It was NEVER about Ukraine.

We cannot allow this war to end - - no way!
I mean - - where will the kickbacks come from if it does?

So, how much of what we send over there - both hardware and cash - is actually serving its intended purpose? I heard last night that Ukraine is using conscripts. Weren't we being told that everyone throughout the country was taking up arms to fight off the Russian heathens?

It was in everybody's interest in 1876 that the Battle of the Little Big Horn come to a merciful end. General Custer massacred a village of women and children and allowed himself to be taken by surprise by a large group of angry people whose only crime was in protecting their own land. Would it have been in anybody's interest to prolong the punishment of Custer and his band of thugs after his pitiful performance of his official duties? The degree of guilt of the two parties engaged in the Russia/Ukraine struggle is obviously at different levels but it needs to end before more innocent women and children are murdered.

We dont have a dog in this hunt, except to hide Bidens crooked dealings and germ warfare.
As far as I'm concerned both countries are corrupt and repugnant, and I dont much care which side wins.

Putin is evil and has a huge ego. He will not lose, even if it means going nuclear. Period!!!
Any sane person knew that on day one -- which is why Senile Joe bidet is giving Zelensky billions of dollars in cash and weapons to keep this hopeless fight going. bidet is the only person who doesn't know that.
If bidet was an actual leader, he would cut off the US taxpayer ATM for Zelensky and force him to agree to try for peace. But Zelensky is too busy putting billions of American taxpayer dollars in his private bank accounts. So Putin will eventually win, and Zelensky will go into exile and live a luxury life the rest of his life. And the destroyed infrastructure and countless deaths among the Ukrainian peasants will quickly be forgotten.
All this because there is no leader of the free world right now.

If the west will continue to supply the weapons needed, Ukraine can win. The recently retired head of the US Army in Europe has repeatedly said that this is the military situation....and that it depends entirely on the willingness to supply the Ukrainians with ammo and weapons needed....they have the troops.

FTA: "The world's great superpower we are no longer, and that's Joe Biden's doing."
No, it has been a long process since the fall of the Soviet Union. We needed the USSR/Russia as an adversary for an excuse to maintain military spending. We ARE NATO, while the other "allies" pursue their own national programs of socialism while largely allowing their own defenses to rot out. The Russians are, and have been for decades, a second rate power with nuclear capability likely to go unused in a European conflict.
We are more than 30 years too late in reducing our Euro/NATO presence. We are still tied to an obsolete foreign and military policy that invites involvement at the behest of "freedom", like restoring the Kuwaiti royal house or establishing "democracy" in Afghanistan and Iraq. China is now engaged in over 120 countries for a fraction of the cost using its Belt and Road infrastructure build to make friends and influence others. They're better capitalists than the USA. Imagine that.

#17, sorry, but there is no way Ukraine wins this war. So much of their infrastructure has been massively destroyed, and it's only going to get worse the longer this war goes on. Their soldiers and innocent civilians die day after day. Weapons can only delay the inevitable.
Russia has 6 times the population of Ukraine. While they are losing soldiers at a higher rate, they have many more to replace them with. They also have the rubles to buy advanced weaponry, and if things get bad for them, they have nukes to turn to (and an evil despot in Putin that is very capable of using them).
