America is bracing for a mass exodus of retail stores across the nation this year, with more than 800 big box locations set to close from California to New York.
Among the iconic names to announce they are downsizing includes Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, Gap and Party City.
At least 803 stores are set to be shuttered over the rest of 2023, with many forced into desperate cost cutting measures amid rampant inflation and declining bottom lines.
The move comes as numerous industries continue to struggle, including Silicon Valley's 'tech wreck' which has seen over 70,000 jobs lost in recent months.

This is misinformation, a lie, a white supremacy, GOP, conservative trick. FJB told us EVERYTHING was wonderful. And I believe him. s/o
He truly believes the crap that is written on the teleprompter and the words that dribble out of his mouth. And unfortunately there is a certain percentage of Americans who are so out of the loop they believe him too. Buckle up America as this is just the beginning. To bad his plane will not fly over the Bermuda Triangle coming home from Ohio, I mean Ukraine.

Why should I go to a store when I have the internet? Food, clothing, tools, etc. Now you can even by cars online. You have to go to gas stations to get fuel. Now if doctors only made house calls.

They are only closing in cities where crime is rampant. They will thrive elsewhere.

imagine how many illegal migrants could be housed in empty retail space instead of spending 500 a night to put them up in fancy hotels. Old malls also have food courts and restaurant space that could be used to feed them.

Maybe, but I think people are tired of the stores and are longing for smaller, more locally owned stores where service is good. As far as I'm concerned, you can close all of the Chinese Outlet stores (aka Walmart).

#11, pretty close to how I feel. Most of these big box stores are staffed by people who just want their paycheck. These stores no longer treat the customer first. The CEO's are usually too big for their britches and are so far removed from the customer. Yes, the small and locally owned stores should be our focus and direction. . .

Those stores can not afford to give away a large portion of their merchandise to looters and "underpriveleged youth" in expensive Nikes and hoodies. No profit, no store. $950 per day adds up. They should have invested in security guards and AR-15s.

I had read that Walmart is closing some stores because of theft at certain stores. Bed, bath and beyond doesn't carry the brands they used to, I've never had the need to go into Party City, Gap is too expensive. When our son was born I was given a $50 gift certificate to Baby Gap, I was able to buy him (6 months old) a shirt and a little sweater. I never went back. Ha!
I'm surprised to see HomeGoods on their list. Maybe they opened too many of them? Such a shame to see the state of our Economy. I'd rather shop at small business shops, remember the article a few weeks ago stating that the Gov't is trying to destroy small town businesses by putting low income housing in those areas... All by design

I used to frequent BB&B and Party City fairly often. Over the past few years, I noticed that they no longer stocked the things I wanted, and the stores were much less crowded. I know that BB&B went to centralized purchasing and started dictating to local managers what they should stock instead of letting them stock what their customers wanted. I assume Party City did the same thing. Both lost me as a customer.

I am not sure what can be done about this. For many people, shopping from home is simply more convenient and, for the disabled or elderly, is real godsend. Unless some sort of levelling of the playing field legislation is enacted, this trend is bound to continue

To be honest, some of these stores were on the ropes long before Biteme arrived. The Gap lost its appeal with the younger set years ago. One can't drive more than five miles between Walmart stores. So, Walmart has reached the saturation point in many areas. Party City sells items for a specfic thing, which can be brought at a number of other stores such as Walmart. Besides, is anyone really in a party mood these days? Bed, Bath, and Beyond items can be had in so many places, I'm surprised the concept of a store that sells these items was even taken seriously. Plus, with stores such as Cosco and even QVC, many items sold at these stores can be had for less and without leaving home. It's the changing retail environment that is responsible for many of these stores going under. The younger crowd doesn't want to leave home to shop when they can do so online. Its why malls are biting the dust left and right.

A contributing factor is all those wages that were demanded causing the price of EVERYTHING to go up to the point that people are much more conservative with their spending budgets and the Bidenflation of higher fuel costs getting all those Chinese products off the boats and being shipped by truck or rail adding to the cost.
How many of these closing are where demonrat socialist marxists are in charge where crime is rampant???

To the people who insist that the Chinese economy exists on Walmart sales: I suggest you find anything at any store that's not made in China.
Like them or not, the failing brands employ tens of thousands of people to keep themselves and the government in $$$. Without the stores there will be more unemployment. Isn't that the end game?

Somewhere they people who run the retail companies forgot they need to collect the money from their customer when they're standing there in long lines with only 2 cashiers.
What I see is a choice to have fewer people to help you, which translates into a unsatisfactory customer experience.
First job of retail, get the people in, and second, collect their money with minimal wait time.

Many different reasons. Some are "get woke, go broke". Others are just poor management. And others are located where the shoplifting rate makes a store untenable.
