The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 9 rejected a Texas-led challenge to reinstate a Trump-era policy that blocked certain immigrants from gaining permanent residency status if they’re deemed likely to qualify for government benefits. The high court didn’t say why it rejected the challenge,(snip) An appeal from 14 Republican-led state attorneys general, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, sought to rescind a lower court ruling against their request to mount a legal defense of Trump’s “public charge” rule after President Joe Biden stopped defending the measure and later rescinded it. The policy was put into effect by the Trump administration in February 2020 and was ended by the Biden administration in

President Trump imposed the rule, presumably through an executive order. Biden rescinded it through his executive order. Such is the problem of issuing rules without going through the legislative process. Of course DACA was imposed through Obama’s executive order yet Trump for some reason couldn’t rescind it.

Documents made public by the nonprofit government watchdog Protect the Public’s Trust (PPT) on Wednesday show Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was completely absent during the supply-chain crisis of 2021 contrary to claims otherwise. According to the ethics group, Buttigieg’s calendar showed no meetings from the time Buttigieg left for paternity leave in mid-August to Oct. 6, 2021. During that time, a “breathtaking backup of container ships” began to swell on the West Coast, and Americans faced empty shelves at grocery stores. Ninety percent of new fathers take paternity leave, but 70 percent of them take two weeks or less. Buttigieg, however, took a whopping eight-week absence

With each gallon of gas pumped in the United States since 1932, drivers have been paying taxes. The revenue is used for road repairs and public transportation such as train and bus systems. Currently, the Fed takes 18.4 cents per gallon for gas or 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel. State gas taxes range from a national high of 61 cents for gas in Pennsylvania, to a low of 8.95 cents in Alaska. But environmentally motivated improvements in fuel efficiency and the move to electric vehicles (EVs) translate to less gas sold, resulting less tax revenue collected. State and federal governments are looking for a new way to fund transportation.
