Jerry Lee Lewis, the rock ’n’ roll trailblazer and piano virtuoso who electrified audiences with his raucous, free-wheeling performances but attracted scandal after he married his 13-year-old cousin, died Friday, his publicist said.
He was 87. Lewis was a consummate showman who gleefully blended the styles of Black rhythm-and-blues musicians, country crooners and ecstatic Pentecostal preachers. He was nicknamed “the Killer,” and his admirers believed he could be the next Elvis Presley.

TMZ reported this the other day and then retracted the story. Just jumped the gun, I guess.

He must have been in extremis to have those premature reports surfacing before his actual demise. Quite the life. I like the story of him showing up for an interview or photo shoot or both and the author was tickled he showed up in white patent leather shoes, I think white suit, the whole nine yards sartorially speaking...

This is so odd, as my son and I were just talking about him yesterday, and the fact that he was still alive!

Jerry Lee Lewis was one wild man. Married 7 times. He married his first wife when he was 16. His third wife was his cousin and she was 13. Big scandal.
I think he was the last of the rock and roll pioneers left. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly all gone.

Urban legend: Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry were booked on the same bill once. They argued over who was going to be the headliner and close the show. The promoter stepped in and told Chuck Berry he would close. JLL didn't like it-so he performed the set of his life, doing backflips off the piano. When he played his last song, Great Balls Of Fire, he squirted lighter fluid all over the piano and set it ablaze. With the piano burning, kids rushing out, firemen rushing in, JLL went to the mic and said "OK Chuck, you're next".

Predictably not a word about Jerry coming back to Christ and making an album of Hymns and Gospel songs with Jimmy Swaggert this past year. That is why he had a peace about dying.

His cousin/wife will collect widow's benefits. She still isn't old enough for regular Social Security.
Great Balls O' Fire!

I never liked him or his music. He didn't have much soul to my thinking. He was just obnoxious and low class trash.
