“Harry Potter” star Ralph Fiennes defended JK Rowling on Tuesday, saying that the abuse and death threats the author has received are “disgusting” and “appalling.” Fiennes — who played the Dark Wizard Lord Voldemort in the film franchise based on Rowling’s books — discussed his feelings about the author while promoting his new film, reports Variety. “JK Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings,” said Fiennes.

Comments:

People should be allowed to express a viewpoint without receiving death threats. This world has gone mad with an entitlement towards violence.

Only a tiny and very loud segment has gone mad. The rest of us either ignore them, point and laugh, or fight it when they're doing real harm to children.

Rowling's critics will claim she is evil. Even Voldemort supports her. Dumb and dishonest all rolled up in one statement. The dumb will believe it. The dishonest will parrot it all the while knowing it's not true.

The comments by Fiennes are an understatement. JK Rowling is the best fiction writer we have seen in the last few centuries, bar none. Her work is pure genius, surpassing Tolkien, Lewis, Burroughs, etc. One can read the Harry Potter books over and over, learning something new each time.

Never mind the haters. Rowling has penned one of the all time classics of children's literature. Forget the movies, read the books. They are excellent. But #3 they are not as good as Tolkien or Lewis in my opinion.

Bless #3's heart but the claim that JKR "surpasses" Tolkien, Lewis, LeGuin et al is tremendously OVERstated and frankly laughable. She's got a great writing style, but by the fourth book had become lazy and indulgent. Compared to The Master and the other greats of fiction, JKR is commercial. Successfully commercial, but I wouldn't put her on the same shelf as Tolkien. I do hope the comparison was tongue in cheek...otherwise, I despair of people today. Too many people today think talent involves just spewing out anything and in as vulgar a vernacular and as Hollywood as they can make it. Tolkien is The Master because he LOOOOOOOOVED language. Too few writers today do and JKR is the more successful of them. Yeah, the Harry Potter series is a fantastic Story...but not great writing.

Thanks for input, #4 & #5. It's a matter of personal opinion but perhaps I was too general in a quick comparison of genius over time. Burroughs definitely gets the nod for writing many quality series given the writing and editing tools of the time and terrific imagination in the Mars series. Tolkien and Lewis both had flashes of imagination not before seen in fiction and match the descriptive powers of Jules Verne. So, like flavors of ice cream, we like what we like and that's a good thing.

Glad to see folks standing up for Ms. Rowling. Although she's pretty good on her own. Recently, there was a report that someone flamed her on twitter or some social media site saying something like "how can you sleep at night with your bigotry" or whatever they're mad about. She had a great response: I just deposit my royalty checks and sleep well.

With a week and a half to go until Election Day, a handful of gubernatorial showdowns across the country that were once believed to be anything but competitive have tightened up in the closing days of the 2022 campaign, which could result in November surprises at the ballot box. In the high-profile race for New York State governor, where polls indicate that Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Rep. Lee Zeldin are now locked in a close contest, the two candidates quickly fired away at each other in their singular debate on Wednesday.

Republican Mehmet Oz says the United States ought to boost wages well above the federal minimum wage by unleashing energy jobs for America’s working and middle class. During Tuesday evening’s Pennsylvania Senate debate, Oz said Democrat John Fetterman “shoots too low” when it comes to wages and said he wants a fierce economic agenda that will boost wages for working and middle class Americans to historic levels — well beyond the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and higher than the Democrats’ proposed $15 an hour.

I can recall the Trump administration being full of content as a writer for a conservative news site and commentary. Because someone was always worrying about the past president, there was always something to talk about. I was worried about Joe Biden’s inauguration, as it was too boring. What content can a nearly 80-year-old man offer? Biden’s boon would be a huge boon, and I was wrong. Biden has been an absolute goldmine and again provided more food for thought for those who prefer a president who can communicate.

If Republicans vote, they are killing democracy. If they don’t vote, they are killing democracy. The only way to “save democracy,” writes The Washington Post’s Max Boot, is to empower one-party rule — a position that probably sounds counterintuitive to anyone with a middle-school education. “Now you need to vote to literally save democracy again,” contends President Joe Biden, or we will lose our “fundamental rights and freedoms like the right to choose, the right to privacy, the right to vote
