Regular readers know I’m a fan of popcorn movies in general and Marvel movies in particular. Having grown up reading and collecting comics, I still remember the days before digital effects when my friends and I would imagine a future when someone would finally make a decent movie based on a Marvel property. The early days of superhero movies, starting with X-Men in 2000 or Blade in 1998 if you prefer, were definitely a mixed bag. If you’ve seen Daredevil, Elektra, any of the Fantastic Four films, the later X-Men films, etc. then you already know that getting the tone right wasn’t easy.

All I can say is go see the new Top Gun movie- as far as a military movie it’s pretty far fetched but it’s great fun. Like movies used to be. Someone wrote that you will feel gyped because you paid for a full seat but only used the edge.

I grew up collecting Marvel comics and I have seen almost all the movies in the MCU. Some are good, some are ordinary and there are a few I won't bother with (Captain Marvel, The Eternals). I like Thor. I like Chris Hemsworth and I like the light tone that Taika Waititi used in Ragnarok. I'll go see this one for sure. Last time I was in the movies was 2019 and this year I've seen Top Gun Maverick twice. It's fantastic. I doubt Thor will be that good, but I still want to see it.

Movie critics hate lots of movies that go on to be popular with audiences and financial success. Just because a movie is fun mindless eye candy doesn't mean it's bad. It means it's enjoyable. Not everything has to have some deep meaning and political/social messages. Why can't a movie just be fun entertainment? The real critics are the audience and box office receipts.

Looks like the folks at Disney are putting another woke project together looking the reviews in the article-- more, more, MORE!!! NOT. Male characters are demasculinized, women are promoted to the point of taking over the story and the spotlight from the title character (see Reva in the recent Obi Wan Kenobi short series). Now they are screwing with Marvel. Why can't there be strong female characters without obvious attempts to wussify the male ones-- they can share the story line without demeaning either male or female ones and without the same sex story lines being gratuitously inserted in. The folks at Disney screwed up Star Wars, now Marvel. I'm praying that they don't do the same with the final Harrison Ford Indiana Jones movie coming up next summer. I plan on seeing that one, but no more $$$ to Disney if I can avoid it from now on.

We live in a post-plot, propaganda era. TV shows and movies are now a melange of scenes whose sole purpose is show alternate identity characters doing "stuff." Also, plot requires a certain amount of cause and effect rationality that the freaks manning the entertainment industry no longer possess. Have you noticed how you can follow the multi-season plots of some TV shows with ease (Game of Thornes, Breaking Bad, Ozark) but others require season-to-season refreshers of what is happening and why? That's because they have abandoned the natural human physics of plot in favor of linking meme-like scenes of wokeness. And that just doesn't sink in and attach itself to the rational-thinking human's knowledge tree.

I thought I might see this movie until I saw Thor say "Jane?" in the trailer, and there was Portman all gussied up as a female Thor, with her little stick arms and everything. I want my humans to stay human. There are so few of them in these movies (other than monster fodder, that is.) Portman: So you have completely given up on a serious acting career, then?

I wonder if the movie is really good, but reviewers are mad at Disney, and want to hurt Thor's box office with bad reviews.

James Caan, the Academy Award-nominated and self-described “ultra conservative” actor best known for his roles in The Godfather, Misery, and Elf has died, according to a statement on his official Twitter account. He was 82. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the statement read. It did not note a cause of death. The Bronx-born actor appeared in dozens of films — including Brian’s Song, El Dorado, and A Bridge Too Far — during his career, which began in the early 1960s. But Caan’s career-defining role came when he played Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s

Over the past couple of days, mainstream outlets have hosted a number of headlines that should make the Biden administration at best very nervous. The President, overseeing a terrible economy, crisis after crisis, and an outright exodus from his administration, can add open rebellion to his list of woes. As my colleague Nick Arama pointed out yesterday, the Democrats are getting extremely frustrated and are now blaming the Biden White House for the party’s woes come November. “‘He’s Missing the Boat Here’: Democrats Slam Biden Over Flailing Leadership, Lack of Fight on Guns and Abortion,” wrote Mediaite. “Frustrated Democrats express alarm over Biden’s powerlessness,” stated The Hill. “‘Be absolutely

On July 5, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the No Patient Left Alone Act to right some of the most egregious wrongs of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, hospitals nationwide denied patients visitation, even at the end of their lives. Nursing homes and other long-term care facilities did the same. Closing healthcare facilities to visitation from family is no longer legal in Florida. During the announcement, DeSantis explained, “It [the law] increases patient protections and ensures Florida families have a fundamental right to visit their loved ones receiving care in Florida hospitals, hospices, and long-term care facilities.” It also prevents the facilities from requiring that family members receive

There has been increasing buzz around Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom facing off in the 2024 Presidential election. These two candidates are the polar opposite of each other, and it seems like as Democrats are attempting to ditch Biden, they might move to Newsom in 2024.Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis may have an interest in running for President as well, but Newsom is already setting up to be the nominee by running ads in Florida aimed at taking down DeSantis. President Biden is finding himself largely powerless to address a spate of setbacks in recent weeks that have sparked alarm among Democrats about the state of the country. Biden has been dealt blow after blow in recent weeks: The Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade’s constitutional right to an abortion; the country is plagued by gun violence, the latest example falling during an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago; and rising costs for gasoline, food and other goods have frustrated the public for months. In each case, Biden’s hands are largely tied, frustrating Democrats

So goes the Glorious 2024 Hope of Democrats — from the French Laundry frying pan into the LGBTQIA++ fire. Gavin Newsom just aired an ad in Florida lecturing California’s burgeoning ex-pat population in the Sunshine State how much freedom they’re losing, especially in regard to sexual choices and women’s rights. After launching that salvo in clear anticipation of the 2024 election cycle, California’s governor left for vacation– but his office stalled on answering questions as to where he went. And for good reason, as CalMatters reporter Emily Hoeven discovered. After griping about Florida’s lack of liberty on such matters, Newsom went to Montana for his time off

There’s a podcast up at the NY Times today which attempts to wrestle with what a post-Roe world looks like. Host Jane Coaston and guests Michelle Goldberg (pro-choice) and Ross Douthat (pro-life) spend half an hour arguing over it and the bottom line is that none of them claim to know where the politics go from here because returning this issue to the states means a lot of different outcomes will be happening all at once. What does come across though is the general outlook of each side of the debate. Goldberg, not surprisingly, feels the overturning of Roe is a gut punch, one which has left her expecting

One man declared himself “furious.” The other was solemn. One insisted that Americans “be angry.” The other touted recent reforms already done. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and President Joe Biden both watched in horror as a mass shooting left seven people dead and wounded dozens more at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park. But their responses in the hours after the July 4 massacre were diametrically different, reflecting not just a divergence in temperaments but of their political approaches to the issue of gun violence in America. Whereas Pritzker demanded that people make politics of the moment — as grisly as it may be — the president initially

For many readers, the above title will conjure up memories of the 2008 housing crash caused by the proliferation of subprime mortgages and the subsequent tsunami of defaults. But a better corollary for the coming Biden bust is the Carter crash that occurred three decades earlier. During the final two years of Carter’s term, sales of existing and new homes collapsed because the Fed was forced to raise interest rates sharply to get double-digit inflation under control. This, in turn, produced double-digit mortgage rates that priced millions of potential buyers out of the market.
