Abandoned by Trump, Alabama’s Mo Brooks
loses GOP primary

Five years ago, Rep. Mo Brooks saw a unique opportunity to become a U.S. senator. Jeff Sessions had just left Capitol Hill to become the attorney general, and the Alabama congressman was ready for a promotion. He even thought he could receive support from Donald Trump — the incumbent president to whom Brooks had offered unconditional support. That didn’t work out. In the 2017 special election, Trump brushed off the Republican lawmaker and threw his support behind Luther Strange, who ended up losing to Roy Moore in a GOP primary.

Comments:

Alabama Republicans have chosen a sparkler, Katie Britt. This MSNBC "report" is a Hate Trump broadside, of course. Author Benen was only a year old when Nixon resigned, so when he snarks, Trump sees loyalty as something he’s supposed to receive, not bestow, his big takeaway, he doesn't remember the price of RMN's stubborn downward loyalty, much less McGovern's support for Tom Eagleton. Loyalty must be inviolable flowing up. Flowing down it has to be thin.

These days a candidate's expetience and education qualifications are overshadowed by race, etnicity, "gender", sexual preference... The dims have elected bag of hammer representatives who think NASA has landed on Mars, Marines can capsize islands and men menstruate. The Stupids vote for "someone like me" and we get "the squad". I wonder if George Washington could be elected in Northern Virginia today. I reckon he could if he identified as a black transman and the Mother of the country.

Politics is a cut-throat business. Wish Rep. Brooks had done better in either Senate race. But I'm not sure that Mo would welcome this faint praise from a MSNBC/DNC hack, either.

Mo Brooks has NO ONE to blame but himself. You don't stand up at a rally in Cullman, Alabama and contradict your host (and endorser!), chiding the audience to "move on past 2020". Why did you say that, Mo?? Inquiring minds want to know. Sorry, Mr. Benen, we ain't buying what your selling.

The Washington Post on Tuesday praised President Joe Biden for restoring what it described as “a sense of dignity” to the presidential pardon process. In an editorial, the newspaper offered a damning contrast between Biden’s “care in determining who should benefit from clemency” to former President Donald Trump, who doled out pardons to “personal associates convicted of or on trial for serious offenses,” those with White House connections or people who had celebrity advocates.

26-year-old Tacoma woman was sentenced to five years in federal prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to arson stemming from the torching of five police cars during the racial justice protests that rocked downtown Seattle after the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis in May 2020. Margaret Aislinn Channon was arrested June 11, 2020, after an investigation by federal agents and Seattle police, who identified her from video showing an individual in distinctive clothing with tattoos on her hands setting fire to the vehicles. During the sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour told Channon that her conduct had done “tremendous damage to Black Lives Matter in Seattle.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in a tweet Saturday morning that the evacuation corridors were being prepared and that a cease-fire is in effect in those areas.

For many readers, the above title will conjure up memories of the 2008 housing crash caused by the proliferation of subprime mortgages and the subsequent tsunami of defaults. But a better corollary for the coming Biden bust is the Carter crash that occurred three decades earlier. During the final two years of Carter’s term, sales of existing and new homes collapsed because the Fed was forced to raise interest rates sharply to get double-digit inflation under control. This, in turn, produced double-digit mortgage rates that priced millions of potential buyers out of the market.
