Google's parent company Alphabet will pay $118 million to 15,500 current and former female employees in order to settle a class action lawsuit that has been in the works for five years. The plaintiffs in the case account for a broad range of roles within the company, including managers, engineers, sales representatives and at least one pre school teacher. They accused Google of putting overqualified women in roles that were paid less, denying promotions to women and generally paying female employees on average close to $17,000 less than men.

That's about $7600 per. Nowhere near the alleged wage disparity. And I wonder how much the lawyers get.

And when you subtract the lawyer’s pelf, each plaintiff gets $4567, not a lot but better than being poked in the rear with a sharp stick. Or was that “ear,” I can never remember?

How embarrassing. Large liberal organization managed by foreigners who have very little regard for women. On average, women are not as technically-oriented as men but those who are deserve equal pay. Not a sexist remark - in my experience, IT staffs at all companies where I have been involved have been at least 80% male. Google should be ashamed for not paying equal wages until legally required to do so. That's only one reason to not use their spyware-infested products.

Nothing in the article explains things like hours worked, work attendance, work quality, or any of the other metrics on which people are compensated. No word about whether there was maternity leave either. Also, it appears to me that the wage disparity stems from what I think is their own low sense of value. It appears that Google asked for their salary requirements, then met their request. Any company would do the same. They are mad because they screwed up by not asking for their real market value. The asshat who threatened rape should be locked up forever. I guarantee anyone with that sense of vitriol has bodies in his past.

In my many years working for tech companies I've seen that usually those consistently working the hardest and producing the most do get the rewards. This often means working very long hours and weekends, things many can't or won't do due to person preferences or family obligations. I have also noticed woman are more likely to have family obligations and take more time off. When returning after taking months off for having a baby it is like starting over. So much can change in those months, they have to re-learn the job that someone had to cover for while they were out. Usually that person covering is a man and that person gets the rewards for doing 2 jobs while the other was out.

I disagree with some posters. Men and Women deserve the pay they agree to when agreeing to work. Period. If they don't like the pay, they are free to go somewhere else. Unless they are indentured servants not free to leave, then they should be paid the same for the 'same' work, not similar.

We hear plenty of reasons for the perfect storm that imploded California. One-party, progressive government, of course. Decades of unchecked illegal immigration, without doubt. Years of mass flight out of state of the productive middle classes, certainly. But perhaps the most important, but overlooked, reason has been the infusion of trillions of dollars of mostly tech capital into the state. Unimaginable sums of market capital warped politics and led to a top-down, feudal society, run by progressive elites who are shielded from the ramifications of their own toxic ideologies.
