Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and other PGA Tour members who teed off in the Saudi-funded golf league Thursday are no longer eligible for PGA Tour events under penalties Commissioner Jay Monahan shared soon after the first tee shot was struck. Still to be determined is whether those players are ever welcome back. The ban includes participation in the Presidents Cup, which for the International team is determined by the world ranking. The USGA already has said eligible players can still compete in the U.S. Open next week. The PGA Tour does not run the majors. In a memo sent to tour members,
While I don't watch golf, but I was curious and read the article. Sounds like another pro athlete group trying to control the players. PRCA tried to do the same thing with bull riders and lost the cream of the crop to the PBR instead of allowing them to compete in both associations.

The PGA Tour monopoly fights another professional golf tour for world golf dominance. WGAF about the PGA Tour. They don't own world golf, as much as they think they do. But like all monopolies they feel the need to control their industry. Can you hear antitrust violations?

Golf is on the rise since Covid. Anything that would promote golf would be a good thing if the PGA had a brain. They should be supporting the game of golf, which I believe is in their charter.

I don't understand the position of the PGA. The LIV events can be scheduled around any of the major PGA Tour events such that the best golfers will be able to play in either event. This should not reduce the TV revenues or charity sponsor returns and could expand the worldwide interest in both tours which benefits everybody. If they are upset over the amount of money the top players get, I think that ship sailed a long time ago.
Maybe they think that people watch golf because of the PGA history but they really watch to see the top talent that is constantly changing as new superstars emerge. It seems more like petty spite rather than any real interest in growing the worldwide golf viewership. It would make more sense for them to share the game and the profits rather than try to control and limit the business.

Some thirty years ago Greg Norman floated the idea of establishing an international tour open to only the Top 30 ranked players worldwide, to play for the really big money. That thing never flew then, but top players today aren't any different from those of other generations. New things are going to be proposed and perhaps the traditional world tours will have some competition. As a golf fan, I'd hate to lose Lefty and DJ on Sunday afternoons. Remember that the PGA Tour shafted Miami by taking away the fifty year duration Tour event at Doral Blue (now Trump National), and sent the tournament to Mexico. That was a bad decision by Trump-phobes. I understand both sides' positions here, and I'm not so sure I'm not with Phil and DJ. The PGA Tour is not holy.

I fear the PGA may be opening themselves up for enormous economic damages in that they be accused of monopolistic behavior.

Golf has always been a gentleman’s game! The PGA doesn’t seem to be acting like their standards might suggest! We don’t cotton to being told by some authority what we can and can’t do! We are free Americans! This will tarnish the PGA unless they get Jack and Tom Watson to come and resolve this, now!

The LIV coughed up an enormous amount of cash and the players are not villians who signed on. However, this LIV golf league is backed by Saudi money, and is a contrived competition, I think. Therefore, I have no interest in the LIV tournaments.

The only tournaments I watch anymore are the Masters, the US Open and the British Open (I know, officially The Open Championship). None of those are PGA events. Banning superstars from PGA events seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Not my career, not my money, not my call.
I did learn the hard way a long time ago career-wise, that if you don't look after Number One, no one else will.

I disagree with the writers here - Screw Saudia Arabia they are terrorist (remember the nationality of the 9/11 terrorists?) You can even wear a cross on you without being subject to arrest. They tera woman shamefully. The Saudis are garbage & trash and NOT our friends. Good riddance to coke head Johnson & money chasing Phil Mickelson. There are plenty of young good guys to root for and #FSuadia!!!!

This is wrong. Once pro golf started making big payouts, it attracted more attention from the Nazis.

The PGA has been attempting to attract blacks since the anomaly of Tiger Woods. The TV commercials are full of them but you won't see one in a tournament. Let them have basketball and stop trying to turn them white.

Do they have a non-compete clause?
Aren't many of the major events earned, thus, they would be eligible?
Can't see how you are wanting to deny someone the ability to earn a living, and play in a few tournaments where they seem to be guaranteed a certain amount.
