Friday morning, Rich Strike wasn't entered in the Kentucky Derby. Saturday evening, the 80-1 long shot was a Derby champion.
The 148th Kentucky Derby went off under gray skies on a track that wasn't nearly as soaked as conditions had forecast, and for almost all of the race, the favorites ran as predicted. But in the final few paces of the race, Rich Strike cut to the inside to beat two favorites, Zandon and Epicenter, to win the race. Rich Strike, entered only when Ethereal Road scratched out Friday morning, is one of the longest-odds horses ever to win the race. Epicenter placed second, and Zandon finished third.

Going to the Derby just to gawk at the finery is on my bucket list. I'm just sorry it wasn't this year to see an underdog (underhorse?) win. That's always far more exciting than seeing a favorite win.

I rarely watch, but I did today. Unbelievable.
Rats, Rich Strike was the horse I was going to bet on.

We needed an underdog story for 2022 and this is it! Love it -- had to rewatch the race to see exactly how he did it. Amazing!

Another year, and the immortal and otherworldly Secretariat’s Derby time record still stands. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of his win
I remember it well.

That was an unbelievable race. Literally. I will wait for the post-race drug tests before I congratulate the winner. That horse was totally amped up even long after the race.

I've posted many times - - that thoroughbred racing has been committing slow-motion suicide - - by no longer training the horses to be professional athletes.
Decades ago - - the Kentucky Derby would be a horse's 15th race - - or 12th or 19th. They had strong foundations - - and form which was predictable within a narrow range - - because of all the races they had. Everyone in the general public knew who the horses were - - because of all their public performances.
But nowadays - - the Derby is only their 5th or 6th start - - there was even one horse who was making his 3rd start! They have no foundations - - no professional bodies or minds - - no established form - - and no following among the general public. And the result is what we have just seen.

I NEVER watch the Derby, I'm a quarter horse guy. But...
I was sitting in a Twin peaks (1st time I had been to one) just ordered a Chickenfried steak and a Lemonade when the race came on one of the 100 tv's in the place...the one right over head. It was like that horse had a Turbo button and Nitrous tanks...suddenly, out from the middle of the pack and passing half the field like they were standing still.

An engineer at work raised thoroughbreds as a hobby. She and hubby had no kids, two engineer salaries, and this was 'their game'. I was talking about these horses one time and asked if she rode them, and she said, "Yes, sometimes." I said do you let other people ride them, and she said, "Only professional jockeys, these are like Formula One cars, extremely high strung animals, not everyone can handle them."
She was a pretty level headed engineer, and I took that as solid fact. I've ridden a number of horses over the years, but they were all well broken saddle horses, the majority owned by other people, friends or outfitters. No expert rider, but perfectly competent on a reasonably well behaved horse. I'd not want to ride one of those four legged grenades.
My wife watched the race, said that the winning horse was just wound up, full of himself after the race, nipping other horsed and really "UP". This is their nature, but I don't have enough knowledge to know if this might indicate drugs. This seems like some football guys when they make a touchdown, hyped up on winning. I hope not drugs, it would really wreck a cool story.

For those who say that horse was just spirited and not drug-enhanced consider the following.
1) That horse also caused a significant delay BEFORE the start when his handlers had trouble getting him to and into the starting gate. Watch them replay.
2) There's a reason his odds were 80-1. His record prior to this race showed no sign whatsoever of such blinding speed. There's would at least have been some evidence of closing speed in other races. There were none.

#13 I guess you have not heard of Mine that Bird or Giacamo. Those horses are on the muscle . High strong and bred to be that way. They are not your daughter's pony.
