When the Finnish Reservists’ Assn. recently announced wartime defense courses for civilian women in the southern town of Haemeenlinna, the 400 slots filled almost immediately, with a waiting list of 500 more. Topics will include shooting, cybersecurity and how to manage the first several days of an invasion from abroad. “I wouldn’t call it fear,” said Sgt. Sonja Airikki, a 39-year-old reservist who will lead the training next month. “It’s more about being prepared.” Military readiness is ingrained in the culture of this country of 5.5 million people that shares an 833-mile border and a long, complicated history with Russia.

The Finns have kicked the Russians butts before, and can likely do it again. They are some of the world's best riflemen.

When Cuba decides to take Russia up on an old offer to do the exact same thing, (form a military alliance and provide weapons of mass destruction and military funding), will Biden be OK with that? Historically it's the USA's position that we will use military force to stop that because Cuba is only 90 miles away. The Cuban missile crisis took us to the brink of a nuclear war, (Russia started it!). Maybe its not a good idea to play Russian Roulett again with the USA picking up the revolver this time.

Helsinki and the surrounding countryside are absolutely beautiful. The Finns I've met are very kind. And they have some beautiful architecture. I want them to be free.

A New York Supreme Court judge held former President Donald Trump in civil contempt on Monday, ordering him to pay $10,000 every day until he fully complies with New York Attorney General Letitia James's subpoena in her investigation of the Trump Organization. James has been seeking various financial records after former Trump attorney Michael Cohen told Congress that Trump had exaggerated the values of various assets on statements in order to get more advantageous terms for loans and for tax purposes. Earlier this month, James's office requested the daily fines and argued that Trump should be held in contempt for failing to meet a March 31 deadline

New York - Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) is poised to agree a sale to Elon Musk for around $43 billion in cash, the price the chief executive of Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has called his "best and final" offer for the social media company, people familiar with the matter said. Twitter may announce the $54.20-per-share deal later on Monday once its board has met to recommend the transaction to Twitter shareholders, the sources said. It is always possible that the deal collapses at the last minute, the sources added. Musk, the world's richest person according to a tally by Forbes, is negotiating to buy Twitter in a personal capacity

Funny how the people comfortable attacking private businesses hate when DeSantis uses their playbook. The current issue du semaine involves the state of Florida passing legislation to strip the Walt Disney Company of the special governmental set-asides it has enjoyed for generations. There are valid positions to be made on both sides of this issue. Initially, I have some reservations about this; it is not an automatic comfort with the direct action being taken in this kind of swift manner, but the more I reflect on the matter, it seems to be a case approaching inevitability. On the left, we see many taking the side that this is a direct violation of free speech
Biden White House preps for pain of GOP

A wave election is on the horizon and the only question is just how strong of a wave it will be. Will it be a traditional kind of victory for Republicans as the minority party typically picks up seats in midterm elections? Or will it be a red tsunami brought about because of deep disapproval of the Biden administration? Either outcome will result in Republicans taking back control of the House and very well may flip the Senate, too. The White House is girding its loins in preparation of the consequences GOP victories will bring. A top concern for the White House is the new investigations that will be opened up.

Early Monday morning (local time), explosions rocked two oil tank farms in Bryansk, Russia.  Bryansk is about 250 miles northeast of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and less than 70 miles from the Ukrainian border. The tweets below are presented solely for the purpose of illustration; the opinions and conclusions expressed are those of the writers. Here are my thoughts: Over the past week, we’ve seen unexplained fires at three significant facilities inside Russia in just two days (read Bad Luck Strikes Russia as Three Major Fires in Two Days Damage Defense and Private Industry). Twitter could be becoming more receptive to a takeover bid from Elon Musk after the billionaire disclosed he has secured $46.5 billion in financing, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. The social media company had been expected to shoot down the offer and had adopted a so-called poison pill to fend off a potential hostile takeover. But executives are now re-examining the bid and are more likely than before to try and negotiate, the paper said, citing people familiar with the matter. The situation is fast-moving, but the two sides are meeting on Sunday to discuss Musk's $43 billion proposal, the Journal reported.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Sunday threw some uncertainty into his plans for a takeover of social media platform Twitter by posting a message that said he was “moving on”. Musk is famed for his enigmatic messages on Twitter, which he often uses to attack people, post insults or simply make jokes. The exact meaning of the latest cryptic message was unclear, as it simply said: “Moving on …”. But the post was made after a dramatic week where Musk, the richest man in the world, secured $46.5bn in financing to fund a possible hostile bid for Twitter, including $21bn of his own money.

Most Americans identify the economy as the top issue in determining how they will vote in the future election, a Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey released this week found. While President Biden continues to struggle with souring approval ratings across the board — a trend that has plagued his presidency — 58 percent of eligible U.S. voters say the economy is the top issue that will determine how they vote in the November 8, 2022 midterm election. No other issue came close, as 32 percent said “healthcare” will likely determine their vote, followed by immigration (28 percent), government spending (23 percent), the coronavirus pandemic (23 percent) and abortion (20 percent).

Very few parts of Russian society have drawn more interest than the so-called “oligarchs.” These are incredibly wealthy men with political connections to Putin’s inner circle because, in the totalitarian kleptocracy that is Russia under Vladimir Putin, if you don’t have political ties to Putin’s inner circle, wealth doesn’t bring you power; it brings you a one-way trip to a Siberian labor camp. The first generation of Russian oligarchs emerged from the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, whose state control over the economy began to loosen under Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika, or restructuring reforms. Over the last 16 tortuous months of the Biden presidency, it’s become clear that the Democrats are running on empty. They are not even trying to reset their electorally poisonous policies.Politically this means they are heading for annihilation at the midterms. Yet they appear curiously relaxed, as if winning elections is no longer a priority. One thing you know is that the Dems are not hiding under the duvet sucking their thumbs. Like the Fantastic Mr. Fox, they have a cunning plan. They might not be any good at governing, but when it comes to seizing power by foul means or fair, they are world-class.
