A primary school has sparked fury among parents by inviting a drag queen to perform a show for children. Hollymount Primary School in Raynes Park, South London, hosted the burlesque entertainer Dolly Trolley during its 'This Is Me' day last Tuesday as part of a week-long celebration of diversity. Wearing knee-high leather boots and a low-cut sequined dress, Dolly Trolley taught a dance to pupils aged nine and over before reading to pupils aged five to nine.(Snip)'My daughter said she felt weird and didn't like it. She said a lot of the teachers were pulling funny faces when Dolly came out in a very revealing

A market in Wuhan, China, that sold live animals likely was the point of origin for the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a pair of studies released Saturday. “When you look at all of the evidence together, it’s an extraordinarily clear picture that the pandemic started at the Huanan market,” said Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona who co-authored both studies, told the New York Times. The studies have yet to be published in a scientific journal. Researchers analyzed data from a variety of sources to seek clues to how the pandemic began. They concluded it was present in live mammals

“LGBT+ rights” are the most important “values and hard won freedoms” distinguishing “us” from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Richard Moore, chief of MI6, the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, wrote on Friday. Moore did not specify if his use of “us” was a reference to the United Kingdom, the Anglosphere, or the broader West.(Snip)He wrote, “With the tragedy and destruction unfolding so distressingly in Ukraine, we should remember the values and hard won freedoms that distinguish us from Putin, none more than LGBT+ rights. So let’s resume our series of tweets to mark #LGBTHM2022.” Moore highlighted an “LGBT+ support group” within MI6 to illustrate his emphasis of “LGBT+ rights”

A Brooklyn man was lucky to escape with his violin—and his life—when a crazed attacker slashed him in the neck in a subway station on Thursday night. Stephen Hanson was returning from practice at the Brooklyn College Conservatory Orchestra when he noticed a man following a woman “really closely” at the Franklin Ave.-Medgar Evers College station in Crown Heights around 8 p.m., he told the Daily News. The woman, who “was trying to get away” from the attacker, broke into a sprint and dashed up the stairs, Hanson said.
That’s when he turned his wrath on Hanson, 35.(Snip)“Next thing I know, he pulled out a shiv

Even as the omicron variant loosens its grip on the world, destinations continue to require travelers to show proof of vaccination. And, increasingly, a paper CDC vaccination card is not cutting it. While the United States government has not issued a federal digital vaccine pass, a national standard has nevertheless emerged. To date, 21 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico offer accessibility to the SMART Health Card, a verifiable digital proof of vaccination developed through the Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI), a global coalition of public and private stakeholders including Microsoft, Salesforce, Oracle, the Mayo Clinic and other health and tech heavyweights. And very soon,

Harlem, Manhattan—Cases and spread might be going down across the state, but restaurants in the city are still struggling to make it through the pandemic. Some owners from eateries in East Harlem organized a petition to ask the state to fund a program that’s supported local businesses and fed hungry people. Lou Martins is the owner of Bistro Casa Azul on Pleasant Avenue at East 118th Street.
“It’s a great idea,” he said. “We hope the governor and state senate and assembly will fund it going forward.” The “Restaurant Resiliency Program” distributed $25 million through to participating locations. They also made the meals, which were distributed to local community

The White House held a brainstorming session on how to combat climate “denialism and delay” even as the Russian invasion of Ukraine fueled pressure on President Biden to end his crackdown on domestic oil-and-gas production. The White House released Friday a readout from the previous day’s first-ever roundtable discussion held by the Office of Science and Technology Policy [OSTP] on “the scientific understanding of why arguments for delaying action on climate change are appealing and how they can be countered effectively.” “It’s clear that a variety of special interests have had a vested interest in sowing doubt on climate change and feeding denialism and delay,”

Feeding Our Future, the St. Anthony nonprofit the FBI is investigating for alleged federal nutrition fraud, is closing its doors for good. The nonprofit's three board members voted to dissolve the organization, they announced Friday—more than a month after the FBI raided its offices and froze Feeding Our Future's bank accounts.(Snip)FBI investigators allege that Feeding Our Future played a central role in a "large-scale scheme" to defraud the government, using tens of millions of dollars meant to reimburse community groups, vendors and nonprofits for providing meals and snacks to children. The Biden Justice Department is ending an initiative aimed at Chinese espionage and intellectual property theft over concerns it created a perception of racism, according to a top official on Wednesday. Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matthew Olsen announced during a speech at George Mason University that the department was scrapping its China Initiative, even though an internal review found no indication of racial bias or prejudice.
Olsen said, according to a transcript of his speech: We have heard concerns from the civil rights community that the ‘China Initiative’ fueled a narrative of intolerance and bias. To many, that narrative suggests that the Justice Department treats people from China

President Biden on Friday afternoon scrapped plans to stay at the White House and prepared to depart for his home in Delaware for the weekend.
