Chinese people in the United States, especially first- and second-generation immigrants, have historically paid little attention to politics because Chinese culture does not encourage civic engagement. We are either too busy making money to support our families or we think the games that politicians play do not affect us. To be honest, I was like that, too. But the pandemic has made me realize that the decisions made by local elected officials do affect our actual lives!During 18 months of online classes, my son was completely unengaged in school and wasted his time all day, every day, playing video games

What we have here is "A Tale of Two Cultures/Colors." One aspires to excellence. The other wallows in perpetual victimhood and demands enforced mediocrity.
So why is the second one totally controlling our government and all our institutions?

The writer makes a very good point. There is a large population of Asians in SF and they do have voting power and should use it. They are hated by some other cultures because they have not bought in to victimhood and government dependence. A lot of the Latino community have seen this light as well. Democrat lies have been exposed. There may be hope.

Ms. Shu, if Asian-American parents believe that the only thing important is the education of THEIR children but let mayors, and district attorneys free to let crime run rampant - then who cares if they won a little school board recall? I am glad for what your community accomplished but it is only a start. Isn't the safety of your kids just as important?

It’s a start but I wish Mrs. Hsu would think less tribally and in a more American fashion. Her emphasis was on Chinese culture perpetuating itself in America. The American experiment requires, rather, an interest in contributing attributes of different cultures into the broader American culture devoted to excellence and freedom. That said, it becomes more evident every day that white people are not what black Americans need to fear but more recent immigrants, including Africans, who dislike them more than we ever have. Their show of prideful uncompromising lawlessness is not great PR.

Many Asian children can play the piano at age eight, excel in school and had to have their Ivy League scores raised to keep a cap on who entered those schools so they were not over-represented. I would say Asians enjoy "Asian Supremacy" and they have earned it. I have no problem walking alone in the Chinatown of any major city at night. That other race that gets all of the participation trophies is still struggling with the basics of school, work and raising a two-parent family whose outstanding accomplishment is not a rap sheet.

Since the Chinese/ Asian population of SF is 26%, you should take the lead and elect more responsible representatives to office, i.e., Nancy Pelosi, and Governor Newsom. SF is like a uncontrollable mud slide. Those politicians are only out to help themselves and are not doing Asians any favors.

Until those immigrants wake up and realize that anything the government does affects them, we will continue to see this happening. But then again, we are dealing with a culture that is used to keeping their problems to themselves and not asking outsiders like the police for help.

Good for them!--the Bay area's Chinese-American populace. Hsu admits that they "have historically paid little attention to politics because Chinese culture does not encourage civic engagement." That's not helpful, but it's no sin. Like the African Americans, the dems have taken them for granted as a voting bloc that will always vote for the left. But when the left panders to the racial equity crowd focused on black slavery 300 years ago as an excuse to give them more power and freebees, the left is damaging children's education in this country. When the silent majority sees their children and grandchildren suffering from flat-out bad education, they get stirred up! See, e.g., the recent election of Governor Glenn Youngkin in Virginia. The weak-kneed Republicans in Congress would be wise to pick up this gauntlet and run with it in the coming election. And that means, not just talking about it ad nauseum ala Miss Lindsey Graham, but actually pushing for action and the local and national level to enhance our children's education, both in public schools and by subsidizing parents who choose to send their children to private, quality schools.

I agree with #9, but one thing I'd quibble with is, it's been 157 years, not 300. But otherwise, good points.

Interesting take on being an American...I come from a different perspective...I am a legal immigrant...who understood full well the power of power hungry politicians like hitler how much damage they can do...and started very early in my life fighting for freedom and questioning the establishment...I taught my children the words of my sainted mother...."oh yeah...says who"...with arms firmly crossed in front of me...WE finally have Americans questioning the gooberment and challenging their dictates...thank you Canadian truckers for reminding US...

#1, for the same reason conservatives have allowed leftists to infiltrate and take control of every American institution, starting with Academia: we were too busy making a living and minding our own business(es). It rarely occurred to us that our liberal friends did not share at least our underlying values, if not our specific political preferences. We played the short game, they played the long one. And people whose main job is grievance husbandry have a lot of time on their hands with which to infiltrate and consolidate. While you were studying for the GREs, they were studying the organizational charts of the Departments Energy, Education, Commerce, and Treasury.

Good for Mrs Hsu that her eyes are string to open up but as a second generation born American. My late mother and grandmother never said ...because German culture does not encourage.....
You come to this country - become American and still respect the culture/country you left behind but don't try to Chinese America.

If you have been paying attention you should realize vulnerable Asian appearing innocent people are being victimized through aggravated assaults and murders almost exclusively perpetrated by violent criminal Black males, especially in New York City. The perpetrators almost all have long criminal records, but have been allowed to continue to run the streets by liberal Democrat prosecutors and able to attack any vulnerable person who they happen to come across. The defense that the liberal Democrats are putting out is essentially is that those Black males have been “put up” to attacking Asian people because of the mostly Republican reasonable theory that the COVID-19 virus came out of the Wuhan China biowarfare laboratory, along with Trump and others referring to that virus as being the “China virus” because that’s where the COVID-19 virus originated. Those supposed Democrat defenses are simply incredible, as violent criminal Black males have never been known to take notice and approve of the conservative Republican political agenda or any conservative Republican politicians. No doubt Asian origin US citizens are taking note that it is liberal Democrat public defenders who are allowing violent criminals to run loose on big city streets able to attack innocent people. Seeing what has been going on politically in the country in those respects, so clearly it is time for those US citizens to ensure that they all vote an make their concerns known.
