Conservative lawmakers in Iowa are pushing to have cameras installed in public school classrooms to allow parents to watch via livestreams—as the debate over critical race theory continues to rage. The lawmakers introduced the bill this week that would see cameras put in almost every K-12 classroom, with the exception of physical education and special needs classes. Teachers who fail to keep the camera recording, or obstruct its view, could be fined up to 5 percent of their weekly salary each time they are caught doing it, according to the bill.(Snip)Florida recently introduced a similar bill to have cameras and microphones installed in public school classrooms.

That would be useful. Keep those teachers away from their leftist indoctrination.

Livestreaming is a great idea. Even better would be continuous recording to play back EVERY interaction. Parents MUST be able to see what happens and what has happened to their children. No space at school should be protected from discovery.

My dog's kennel has live streamed for years. My kid's school, no. Why can I see my dog but not my kid?? This should have happened nationwide years ago.

Remember how so many schools tried to get parents to agree to NOT watch over their kid's shoulder during the lockdown? There was a reason for that. The teachers were indoctrinating, not teaching. And they KNEW it was wrong. And they were trying to hide it. And they should NEVER be able to do that again. I applaud this move. It should be universal.

I'm a big fan of OP's posts, but this time I think I'd look at the situation in an opposite way. It's time that the TEACHERS are under constant surveillance. One of the things we all saw with our own eyes during lockdowns was the shocking indoctrination and teacher behavior taking place. I'm no fan of surveillance, but, short of having a parent sitting in on every class, this may be the only viable option to put a stop to the garbage.

Not one of us would like to work with a Camera on us 24/7, and the teachers won't like it either. I am against it. No one should have to be under surveillance at work. This will turn out to be more trouble than it is worth.
I am totally against Critical race theory and teaching the leaning of leftists, I believe what should be taught is the 3 R's and the basics of life, but teachers should be neutral in in their teaching of it. Today most students have cell phones, If they are being fed crap they can record it. But I am against parents having their eyes on teachers in a system like this.

Iowa has a small black population. Put those cameras into schools in urban areas in Pennsylvania, for example, and everyone will be shocked at classroom behavior.

7, kids are not allowed to have their phones out during school hours. Not at my kid's school. And I don't want my kid to be in the middle of a political war and have the teachers know who isn't on board with their garbage. These are kids and should be shielded from all this. Most of the kids won't even know they're being fed garbage. That's the entire problem.
As far as teachers not wanting to be filmed all day? So what? Lots of people are on camera all day. Anyone who works retail, at Starbucks, as a security guard, at my dog's kennel, street construction, baby sitters, a lot of cops, every postal worker, and countless others are on camera all day. Tough if the teachers don't like it and feel they're special. Of all the people on camera all day the ones at the very top of the list should be the ones who have our children.
I don't know these people. They're not my friends and family. Why should I trust a random teacher to not abuse my kid or fill her head with mush every day? Try that with a camera and I'll be at school in person before that class ends. That is why they don't want it.

Many of Today’s “teachers” are not the professionals of yesteryear. Through actions and deeds of these government paid - teachers union members, there are ample incidences that merit oversight of them.
Trust but verify.

Excellent idea. (The left screamed for police to have cameras.)
I knew a teacher who slept with her head on her desk most of the afternoon. Finally gave her a piddling job until she received full retirement.

I don't watch the kennel all day. I spot check. And I assume the other 20 dog owners do also. Between us if there is an ongoing issue someone will spot it eventually.
These teacher's union marxist thugs need to be on camera all day, even if no one is watching any particular moment, someone *might* be watching and that's enough to keep most of them inside the lines.

strikes me as a strong, cheap, and effective move to directly get at the truth what these employees of the
school district are teaching the kids.

Of course, telescreens should monitor all Oceania's children. To "protect" them.
Kinda rhymes with the song Dubya sang to crash our liberties against the rocks of the Deep State when he told us that expanding the power of the NSA to monitor our calls without a court order would . . . . "protect" us.
"He loved Big Brother."

If you don't trust your kids' teachers, move them. Don't normalize constant surveillance. As a retired teacher myself I realize that there are legitimate concerns about liberal curriculum. But most teachers I worked with were conservative, decent people. Even my liberal coworkers had no time in the school day to go on liberal crusades. We were all just trying to get little Johnny and Jane to pass the slew of mandated state tests. Talk to your kids about their day. What did they cover in class? Did anything interesting happen? What was their favorite moment? Least favorite? What are they reading in English? What are they working on in athletics? Etc. Communicating with a child is the parent's role. Not lurking behind a camera.

The way I see it, and this is how it was for years, the first step is to hire trustworthy school principals, who in turn will hire respectable teachers. Instead, we concede that principals will hire Marxist teachers who will constantly sneak cute items into lessons while parents look over their shoulders all day, even while the parents are at work. This is why private schools are booming. Send kids to schools with positive value systems, keep tabs on what's going on. The camera proposal is no different from having a police force run by crooked leadership who in turn hire crooked cops, then the citizens (at their own expense) would monitor the cops all the time knowing that they're bad.

If teachers are videoed as they work, then so should every student in the room so parents can see what teachers have to deal with. If teachers are videoed at work, then everyone else can be videoed as they work. Be careful what you ask for.

#7 Millions of Americans are on camera every minute they work, every day. Work in Walmart, you are on camera? Bank teller, of course. A Cop - you have to carry your camera with you. So... WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? If you are doing anything with our children that you don't want taped, DON'T DO IT.

Pls excuse a second post. School systems, school committees, teachers, their unions, etc. have brought this on themselves.
I do support the initiative of putting cameras in classrooms to observe both student and teacher. I also support school choice and vouchers. Choice and vouchers will put government run schools and government paid employees on notice to strictly adhere to standards and compete with their non government brethren..
Not a fan of zero tolerance for dealing with student dust ups, but I think it is time for a Zero Tolerance policy directed towards wayward teachers who operate outside the requirements of their position. Whether CRT, exposing young minds to aberrant sexualization, teacher on student pedophilia, (teacher activities routinely covered/exposed in media), transparency will improve demeanor of all players.
Last point: unions are way to powerful and protect those who need to be held to account for their actions.
If indeed its not about teacher pay and benefits, but rather its really really "all about the children" and "children are our priority" then lets get back to basics, transparency and professionalism.

Who would be the monitors that deem which behaviors are offensive? There are plenty of parents that agree with CRT and the LGBTQ+ crowd that would heartily approve of the Sorosian indoctrination. I support parents given our tax dollars directly to pay for the education of children. Let the free market prevail. If having cameras in the classroom is popular, more schools could adopt it on a case by case basis. We should be getting rid of the surveillance cameras, not adding more.

It has become routine for police to wear cameras while they're working, thereby recording alleged words and behaviors surrounding events in which details may be contested or unclear. This is called evidence.
There are bad apples entrusted with authority throughout the United States. Some are in law enforcement. Some are in classrooms. The facts in abusive treatment claims could be discovered more easily with a recording. Whether there's a problem with poorly socialized students, or radical, agenda driven teachers, getting to the truth should be something school boards and the communities they serve can agree on.

I normally agree with many of the posters’s points of view on a variety of topics. Not this time. Surveillance of classrooms in public, government-funded schools is an unfortunate necessity in these times of the fascist, Marxist takeover of our children’s education. I wonder how many of you have any idea of what’s actually happening. I have grandchildren in elementary school in a rather conservative district, and I am appalled at some of what goes on. In addition, my DIL teaches in this same district, and her stories about what other teachers are getting away with in their classrooms, even after parental complaints and administrative admonishment, is quite concerning. For those of you who think it is as simple as simply moving or asking your child, “How was your day?” you are out of touch as to what is happening now. I applaud this move. IA has an excellent governor.
And, #16, Oceania is who is indoctrinating our children. I’m all for giving Winston a little more power.

It's important to get kids accustomed to being under constant surveillance, and also to put a nice chunk of money in the pockets of the camera vendors and the companies who will support them on an ongoing basis.
