A large part of this issue of The New Criterion is devoted to a debate over the merits and limitations of what, for lack of a better term, has come to be called “common-good conservatism.” I say “for lack of a better term” because the phrase does seem to load the dice. Surely any plausible alternative to “common-good conservatism” would also seek to foster the common good. The occasion for the debate is the essay printed below by Kim R. Holmes, a prolific author and for many years a senior official at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Holmes describes and criticizes two strands of this new(ish) conservative impulse.

Bottom line: We conservatives want the liberals to stop trying to rule us. Laws are used to condemn whoever they want to restrain. Government is used to protect government. Instead of difficult freedom, we have tyranny. It's time to water that pesky Tree of Liberty again. It's anyone's guess how many lives will be required.

Politics and ideology do not mix well. One is a practical exercise in governance, with all the attendant pressures and corruption that surrounds the outcome; the other a pure thought exercise, a philosophy or set of principles. Liberals are like that bearded fellow asked the meaning of life: "It's doing stuff." Doing "good stuff" to correct injustice is always popular, especially when one can derive self-benefit. Power is always a benefit in political victory. The victorious are now directing the behavior of people, ensuring they are now doing "right" and eliminating "wrong". You can find it in every law passed, from seatbelt mandates, tax schedules and "loopholes", to hate crimes. And when given the opportunity, "conservative" politicians may nibble at the edges and never repeal. Let's look at Obamacare as an example. Is it gone? Bits and pieces...not all, not even most. As Mitch invariably says, "It's the best we could do." Ideologues can live with their principles. They affect no one but themselves. They can live true, or not. No compromise need ever be made or acknowledged. Their lives; their choices to justify however makes them comfortable. As for most people, they wouldn't know Locke from Marx, or St. Augustine from Plato. The erudite and learned trade quotes that matter to no one else, and mutter that everyone should have benefit of these political philosophers. Some turn this into a career in letters and television. It's fascinating how "real conservatives" today are all set to go to war over Taiwan and Ukraine, having supported Desert Storm to restore oil-rich potentates to their palaces. All in the cause of "freedom", of course. They trumpet our founders and fail to heed the advice of Washington regarding foreign adventures and entanglements with "old Europe." It's okay to have spent as much as TEN TRILLION in stimulus and paycheck protection schemes until January 20, 2021, when it became dangerous to add more to that pile and fuel inflation now. How "real conservatives" had no issue with corruption of law such as using the Defense Production Act to commandeer business to manufacture ventilators and other products. There are a number of long-standing and largely expanding examples of how "conservative" politics veers from conservative ideology.

Barrington Declaration is ‘Dangerous’

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its top officials are doubling down on criticism of the Great Barrington Declaration after emails showed they quickly moved last year to oppose it. The declaration, penned last year, said lockdowns were producing negative short- and long-term effects on public health, such as lower childhood vaccination rates, fewer cancer screenings, and worsening mental health. The experts who signed on called for focusing COVID-19 prevention efforts on the most vulnerable, particularly the elderly, while loosening restrictions on the young and healthy, who are at little risk of developing severe COVID-19.

The arrival of the omicron variant has led some politicians and public health grandees to call for a return to business closures and ‘circuit-breaker’ lockdowns. (snip) Early reports from South Africa confirm that the variant is more transmissible but produces a milder disease, with a lower chance of hospitalization and death upon infection. My message is this: we can’t stop the spread of COVID, but we can end the pandemic. In October 2020, I wrote the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD) along with Prof. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University and Prof. Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University. The centerpiece of the declaration is a call for increased focused protection of the vulnerable older population, who are more

During his marathon annual year-end press conference Q&A, which this year lasted about four hours, Russian President Vladimir Putin once again vowed to defend Russian society against the intrusion of the corrupted values of the West, in particular blasting the “gender obscurantism” pushed by the United States and Europe. “I am a proponent of the traditional approach that a woman is a woman and a man is a man,” Putin laid out, which it goes without saying also reflects basic Biology 101 and humans’ self-understanding for thousands upon thousands of years. He continued in the remarks on gender: “A mother is a mother, a father is a father. And I hope

The wait is over. Almost two full weeks after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released their knee-heavy Middle Eastern-themed Christmas card, the Sussexes have finally settled on their stoop and published their own end-of-year tableau of domestic bliss. And it’s truly very nice, if you like that sort of thing. What a year it’s been for Britain’s unofficial ambassadors to Santa Barbara. An annus dramaticus, if that’s a word, which it is not. The Sussexes’ 2021 started with a declaration that they will not be returning as working royals and would instead prefer a quiet life in California – a pledge they instantly underscored by conducting an exclusive, marmalade-dropping interview

A previously unseen Oct. 2020 email from Dr. Francis Collins, the outgoing head of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to his colleague Dr. Anthony Fauci is raising concerns about government-sponsored suppression of free speech—a direct violation of the 1st Amendment. The email, which appears in a footnote of a Dec. 17 year-end staff report from House Democrats, shows the behind-the-scenes efforts from Collins and Fauci, who were pushing a fresh round of lockdowns, to discredit the Great Barrington Declaration and disparage its authors. The Great Barrington Declaration was an Oct. 2020 letter that ran counter to the efforts of Fauci and Collins by declaring a unified opposition to broad-based lockdowns,

Credit President Joe Biden with not hitting the panic button in his speech on the Omicron wave — but that’s about it. The prez rightly noted this isn’t March 2020, and no new lockdowns should be necessary. But that was the closest he came to anything original. And it serves his interests: Declaring a new crisis would highlight how badly he’s failed on his 2020 vow to “shut down the virus.” It’s now clear that he thought then that all he’d need to do was continue distributing the vaccines developed before he took office, that’s it. (Hence his declaration in July that we’d achieved “independence from COVID-19” because vaccinations were going well.)

Flying cars are still the stuff of Jetsonian dreams, but self-driving cars are already here. But these semi-autonomous vehicles come with a host of issues. For instance, they must be able to deal with the erratic driving behaviors of humans, as well as unexpected obstacles on the road, such as a wild deer crossing the highway. But a critical though lesser discussed problem associated with self-driving cars involves surveillance. These vehicles look likely to be used as surveillance tools, closely monitoring our every move. Worse still, China, a country that has expanded mass surveillance and integrated it into every part of Chinese life, is leading the self-driving revolution.
