Beijing has mocked America by saying their secret test of a 21,000mph nuclear-capable missile, which orbited the globe before returning to Earth to strike its target, is a 'new blow to the US's mentality of strategic superiority over China'.
The jibe follows a report from the Financial Times, which cited five unnamed intelligence sources, said the Chinese military launched the Long March rocket in August carrying a 'hypersonic glide vehicle' into low orbit.
It circled the globe before descending towards its target, which is missed by about two dozen miles, in a technological development that would overcome US anti-ballistic missile systems.

But if you miss your target by 10 miles the weapon is worthless. I'll bet one of our TR3b's against two of their rockets.

I am not that impressed by this. An SLBM or ICBM can strike within minutes as well, and we have had this technology for 50 years. Re-entry is around 20,000mph.

The effective destruction radius of a typical nuclear weapon is about 1-3 miles.
A ten mile miss with a nuke....like a ten foot miss with a rifle. Now, WHERE that "bullet/nuke" goes besides the target can be bad, of course. But don't imagine that a nuke destroys a 40 mile diameter area because the do NOT. Not even close. Typical planning to take out an industrial city has been about three warheads precisely spaced for maximum effect, no overlap.
Plus, our ICBMs have been able to hit their targets "in minutes" for 50+ years, and they go similar speeds. Sub launched missiles can hit their target in 10 minutes from launch in some cases.
All a bunch of DM ignorance and Chinese hokum. Not really anything significantly new.

You all are wagering they’re satisfied with that?

Indeed, #4. Despite the naysayers, I think strategic planners would love to have the evolved capability in their hip pocket.

Shrug. This is not a weapon intended to destroy a city or industrial site. ICBMs work just fine for those and we don't have a serious defense against a serious ICBM attack.
This is the kind of thing that could be used against a carrier fleet. But why bother? They already have heavy air and anti-ship defenses along their coast with longer range than most of our planes. The carriers can't get within striking distance now anyway.
This weapon serves no purpose and has no role to play in any future conflict but it made for some good PR.
In the meantime we are developing hypersonics launchable from bombers while theirs needs a huge ground based boost to low orbit. Like an ICBM.... hypersonics are 50+ year old technology anyway. I'm going to sleep just fine tonight as getting dead from this is no different than getting dead from the ICBMs they already have.

Bad news for China. Nothing is inevitable, except the collapse of your real estate market. Don't think Taiwan is inevitable either. Taiwan will shoot back.

Pooh poohing a 10 mile miss overlooks several factors. Number 1, what is the size of the warhead? Is the warhead 100K tons or 10 MG tons. HUGE difference in destructive power. Number 2, a 10 mile miss still means that the weapon is going to detonate somewhere. Least we forget, Iraq's SCUD missiles were very inaccurate, but still managed a lot if death and destruction, as well as pinning down forces. It only takes a few nukes to destroy an economy.
I think that many here aren't grasping what a hypersonic missile is. Russia and China are ahead of us in this technology. For good measure. Throw in hypercavitation torpedoes. We have no countermeasures for either technology. For good measure, throw in China and Russia's ability to hack just about any system out there and shut us down. Bidens answer? Here's a list of things that you better not hack.
While WE have been concentrating on building a military to fight conventionally, our opponents have been concentrating on defeating us.

A Loan shark that kills off his biggest borrower goes bankrupt. Without US to buy their products China would quickly face economic collapse, mass starvation of billions of people, and a revolt that would quickly end their government. If they missed the US target by 10 miles they would still hit a bulls-eye on Beijing. It's nuclear theater and always has been. It's never going to happen

What #10 posts makes perfect sense. But these days when people you once thought rational, reasonable, and intelligent nadlering where they eat, it gives one pause to wonder.
