Victor Davis Hanson: Why I Left National Review

Original Article

Victor Davis Hanson, author of "The Dying Citizen," speaks with FNC's Tucker Carlson about why he no longer writes for the National Review. VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: I didn't know much about Donald Trump, I wasn't a supporter of his in the primaries, but I knew he was going to win. I just knew it, because he was saying things I could not believe. And, you know, we're going to redo Youngstown, Ohio. No, he had this black suit, it was 105 degrees, he had a Queens accent. And then he came to California, I talked to a bunch of farmers and asked if he had come here,

I love this: ...a lot of them felt it was their duty as Republican establishmentarians to tell the world they didn't approve of Donald Trump's tweets or his crudity. My message was always: But, it's good for the middle class. He's kind of like a Shane or Magnificent Seven or High Noon, he's a gunslinger we hired and we are the townspeople that are impotent and he came in with certain skills. And he started to have success and now we have the luxury of saying we don't like the fact that he has a six-gun. But he has to ride off into the sunset. But they didn't -- there were other issues I think they felt were more important, so I think it was a good parting for both of us. This made me more than smile. It has been interesting to see Dr. Hanson’s more frequent guest appearances on FoxTV - Tucker, especially. For all of his scholarly credentials - and they are very impressive - he is from a family-run California raisin grape farm in a little place called Selma. Yes, he is a Californian!!! And there are far more like him here than some would like to admit. Their problem. He is more than smart. Educated. He is wise.

Dr. Hanson stayed with N.R. about six months longer than I was able to. I became so tired or each issue starting with an insult toward President Trump, so I decided that renewing my sub just to read Dr. Hanson was foolish. Like The Weekly Standard, N.R. has committed suicide, so to speak, by pushing their progressive opinions and advice. Unless reborn as a conservative publication, so long National Review.

I am amazed that “conservative” folks like those at NR would prefer to put up with the excrement show that is the Biden administration with all its socialism than to deal with Mr. Trump and his conservative policies—because they deem Mr. Trump crude and rude. It’s as if Biden were a kind gentleman like Jimmy Carter the Sunday School teacher. But Biden isn’t. He’s as mean as a snake.

I am surprised it took VDH so long to leave. I have always disliked the estsblishment republicans attitude that they were willing to lose rather than get into the mud and fight. The Bushes, Dole and Romney thought people would prefer to vote for gentlemen. McStain would fight - but only other repubs. The GOP never heeds the old adage that nice guys finish last and they disliked Trump for calling a spade a spade as opposed to an entrenchment implement.

I enjoy reading Dr. Hanson's views on mostly everything, but I question why the necessity to always point out Trump's deficiencies by those who decided to vote for him in spite of them; especially, the dreaded Queens accent and the cheeky tweets and the less than perfect manners (or so they imply). It seems to me that he does what he says he is going to do, has tackled some pretty big problems with excellent results, improved our standing throughout the whole world, and can be very caring to others. Meanwhile, his detractors aren't that great. They should just drop the whole Hate Trump thing. If not, they should tell us how they could have done any better.

I would have loved to have VDH as a teacher. He is so insightful and he can articulate his thought so beautifully. I'd give anything if he had taken over Rush's show. He may be a bit to soft spoken but I'd be willing to listen to him for three hours every day even if he flubs a few "Pure Talk" commercials. I am craving my daily dose of wisdom. I'm not getting it from guys the same age as my kids.

National Repuke is a mystery in the way that Black Holes are a mystery. No light escapes. VDH at National Repuke - talk about casting pearls before swine. Well, here's what it is...they're ashamed of us. We're the country cousins, the rubes, the hicks. We embarrass them because we are not afraid to show our patriotism or our belief in God, we sing the National Anthem at sporting events and put our hands over our hearts and say the Pledge of Allegiance. We don't go to grand galas that cost $35,000, we don't idolize celebrities or watch their stupid award shows on TV. Yup, we embarrass them in front of their friends on the left. Those who nitpicked President Trump - foolish considering all the good he did - have ranted on this forum about his being crude, or that he tweeted too much (did they miss the part about his starting to use Twitter so that he could get his own words out the way he expressed them, not the way the media distorted them?). His daughter Ivanka said it best: When asked what word would describe her father, she said “blunt”. If you look that up you will find “uncompromisingly straightforward” (at least that’s what my dictionary says). I find that to be a splendid quality in any person. Those in Flyover Country had trouble with his sounding as though he came from New York. What else would he sound like? Someone I used to know would have said “they’re picking fly specks out of the pepper…”) VDH saw a great leader who actually tried to do things to improve the lot of America’s middle class. Who can argue with that?

WASHINGTON—President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats’ push for a 10-year, $3.5 trillion package of social and environmental initiatives has reached a turning point, with the president repeatedly conceding that the measure will be considerably smaller and pivotal lawmakers flashing potential signs of flexibility. In virtual meetings Monday and Tuesday with small groups of House Democrats, Biden said he reluctantly expected the legislation’s final version to weigh in between $1.9 trillion and $2.3 trillion, a Democrat familiar with the sessions said Tuesday. He told them he didn’t think he could do better than that, the person said, reflecting demands from some of the party’s more conservative lawmakers. Biden used those same figures during
