Israel has once again reminded us that we should thank our lucky stars that the Jewish state is on our side. In the “What Have You Done For Us Lately” Department, Israel has just completed tests of its new high-power laser system that, installed on a civilian aircraft, can shoot down drones. It promises to be what is called a game-changer. The story of this remarkable advance is here: “Israel successfully downs targets using airborne laser system,” by Anna Ahronheim, Jerusalem Post, June 21, 2021: "The Defense Ministry has successfully carried out a series of interceptions to shoot down drones with a powerful airborne laser system."

Not sure I would have announced this to everyone.

They should test this system out on Iran.

By sharing ithis with the Xiden administration Iran and all Israel's enemies will have it on no time.

If used against ground targets, is it capable of turning Hamas terrorists into goat bacon? Or fly ash?

Bet it will also take down those balloons used to set fires in and along the border. Would be nice to see Gaza set on fire.

The U.S.A. ditched its Boeing 747 based Airborne Laser program many years ago... I guess the Israelis continued on with our tests.

Israel and the US have been working on laser defense systems for decades. Being able to knock down a drone or missile with a laser isn't new. The breakthrough is that there but it small and powerful enough to mount it on a Cessna. It takes a lot of energy to produce a beam capable of burning thru metal fast enough to destroy it.
My only concern with energy weapons is that the beam keeps going after its burned thru or missed its target.

#7. Bullets keep going, too. And eventually fall down to the ground (unlike a beam of light)
I work with very high powered lasers. One drawback they all have is they don’t work as well in fog, clouds, smoke, haze, rain, etc.
Little drops of water (or whatever) reflect and disperse the beam, especially over a distance.
Not a big deal in a desert area like Israel. But even they have foggy days.

This weapon can be stolen and used against our ground attacking aircraft. But I suppose Israel will come up with a solution for that too!

Will it work against F15s and Nukes🤔

I think this announcement is meant to be a deterrent directed towards Israel's enemies...and if I were the mullahs in Iran... I would think twice about more scuds attacking Israel in the middle of the night...it is wise to remember... Israelis are the chosen people by God...they have suffered in Egypt and in Germany ...but they always win in the end...

We have them too but the cloak of secrecy is wrapped tightly around them. One day Biden will threaten Putin with a good sunburn, count on it.

When you have an open border, enemies don't worry about lasers.

I wonder if they call it 'The Finger of God'...you would think after all the attempts to destroy Israel, that they would know God is protecting them...but no, they keep trying and trying.....

I remember when the Democrat/Marxists used to make fun of Ronald "Raygun" for spending money to develop impossible "Star Wars" technology.

If it can fry a drone or a missile in the air, what might it do to a terrorist on a bicycle...? Problem is, once Biden's gang has it, the Chinese will have it.

Biden’s admin will slip the plans to China. If Israel is smart the Jews will keep this to themselves. I have the idea that there is a method behind announcing it. We might also get to see a little demonstration soon as in a hot little hole drilled through a Hamas commander.

Israel's enemies should be ''very afraid'' just on general principal considering to whom that state belongs. I have read the end of the Book. It will eventually work out to Israel's favor.

Does it even take droplets of water like clouds and fog to diffuse the cohesion of the beam over a distance? (referencing #9) Don't ordinary gas molecules also have the capability of deflecting the photons or absorbing some of their energy? This announcement sounds like a high-stakes bluff to me.

Anyone for popcorn?
This is a short range air to air laser CRAM (Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar and Drone) designed to fill any gaps in the Iron Dome SAM system. Both the Israelis and the US military have been doubling the power output of these systems every 2 years. It was only a matter of time who went public first. The Israelis are putting the Jew-Jew in the pew-pew.
This is the 21st century after all.

We've had this for ten plus years. At least one unit was installed on a USN ship for field tests.
Dust, fog, smoke, etc degrades the effects massively, a huge limitation.

A number of years ago I bought a 1-pound container of gunpowder for reloading handgun ammunition. It was from an American company but clearly marked “made in Israel”. My first thought was”oh, good - those guys know what they’re doing.” Israelis are at the forefront of weapons design, as they are in the fields of computer security and pharmaceutical research.
What have the Muslim countries done in the past 1,400 years to further the enlightenment, health and security of the world at large? It’s okay, I’ll wait...............................

Just like Obama had one of our drones "crash" in enemy territory and suddenly they have manufactured exact copies by the hundreds to put into service against us and Israel, so just wait, and sooner rather than later with the new Israeli liberal government in place, the enemy will know about everything they have.
