The world must stop investing in new oil and gas wells in order to hit ambitious climate goals by 2050. That’s a more aggressive stance from influential watchdog, the International Energy Agency, in a report out Tuesday. According to the IEA, there is a narrow but viable pathway for redesigning a global energy sector that produces net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 — the mid-century target adopted by the U.S., the European Union and select others.
China, the world’s largest polluter and one that has continued to expand coal use, has tagged 2060 as its goal

By 'this year' they mean today. No new investment of any kind in any fossil fuel project including specifically no new oil and gas wells drilled as of today. No new exploration beginning now.

"Carbon emissions" are a good thing. They keep all the green plants alive, which are the entire basis of all life on Planet Earth.

I don’t understand the word ‘must’. Who are these people? Who gave them this authority? Was there an election?

Let us all return to our origins. You will like living in a cave. No red meat. No fossil fuels. No freedoms. No liberty. But at least no mean tweets.

In case it slipped in under the "radar" Dyslexia Occasionally-Cognizant's "goal" was 2030 or we're doomed. Slow Joe's goal was 2035 last I heard. These idiots' goal is 2060. Anybody getting the drift ?

They seem to think we can keep our "green" energy tech (solar panels, wind farms, electric cars) while cutting off the carbon-emitting power sources. The notion is completely unrealistic, of course; but when did the unicorn-sniffing Lefties ever let reality interrupt their utopian fantasies?

There is no "climate crisis"! Good grief. And, if in fact, there is global warming, seems to me that would be a good thing. I would rather be warm than cold any day.

These fools will kill hundreds of millions of people worldwide with their policies. Name adequate replacements for oil, natural gas, and coal. They haven't thought this out.

What they are really saying is that no one will buy their electric crap until there is no gas to be had.
So stop drilling for oil and fracking and force Americans to buy electric if they want to get to the store , work and the Doctors Office,.

"These fools will kill hundreds of millions of people.."
Yep.
But have you considered
That's The Point!
The OvPoPs believe the natural carrying capacity of the planet is about 500 million breeders.
And they don't need you....

If we don't invest in petroleum, how are we going to fly the helicopters to spray the diesel on the wind turbine blades to de-ice them when they freeze up?

The Western World would not have developed without the exploitation of fossil fuels. Our entire American way of life, including our leisure time and enjoyment of the arts is intrinsically related to our ability to exploit mineral deposits, enabling our ability to produce and store food, making grains, vegetables, and meat products available to feed humans around the world. We saw how panicked the` hypocrites on the left got when we had but a short fuel supply interruption in the eastern US and how the Gores, Kerrys, and Thornbergs of the world cannot wean themselves from international air travel but some pointy headed communists think that they have the authority to ban by royal edict our use of petroleum based products, which are a significant component of practically every consumer product, including modern medications, TVs, modern handguns, rifles, and shotguns and the ubiquitous smart phones attached to every progressive hand the world over. Are we expected to give up the core ingredient of civilization without a bloody darned fight? Ever wonder how marine fossils can be found on hill tops around the world? Or how tropical plant fossils and the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs that ate the plants can be found in desolate arid deserts around the world? What are now a deserts were once tropical rainforests and the climate changed yet again, all without the benefit of SUVs spewing carbon from I-5 through I-10 to I-95. Throughout geologic history, the radical climate changes are the norm, and North and South poles have shifted more than once but none of it can be blamed on human activity, as humans were still millions of years from emerging on Earth. While humans can't destroy the Earth, select "special" humans, ostensibly our betters, can certainly destroy our lives but only if we allow it.
