An Asian woman was slapped on a Brooklyn subway train by a teenage stranger who told her, “Get off my train, you don’t belong here,” cops said Wednesday. The 50-year-old victim was riding a Coney Island-bound D train through Borough Park when the hateful teen confronted her, smacking her in the back of the head. The victim got off the train at the Ninth Ave. stop and did not require medical treatment. The attack is the latest to come to light as the NYPD battles a surge in hate crimes against Asian New Yorkers.(Snip)The suspect is described as Black,

Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana have sued the Biden administration over a mandate in the American Rescue Plan that they say prevents states from cutting taxes. The states, led by Texas, argue the federal government is violating the constitution by prohibiting states that receive federal COVID-19 aid from using the money to “directly or indirectly” offset tax revenue reduction. “This is yet another attempt by the federal government to unlawfully exert control over how sovereign states operate,” said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. “While hiding behind a deceptively friendly name, the Act effectively removes Texas’ ability to lower taxes while granting Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen

Washington—The Treasury Department says it will employ measures to avoid an unprecedented default on the national debt this summer, but officials say those measures could be exhausted “much more quickly” than normal given the unusual circumstances of the global pandemic. Treasury officials on Wednesday urged Congress to pass either a new borrowing limit or another suspension of the debt before a July 31 deadline. The Treasury will continue to initiate the types of bookkeeping maneuvers it has used in the past to keep the government from breaching a level that would trigger a default on the massive national debt. “In light of the substantial COVID-related

After drawing up plans to offer discounts to anyone wearing blue to show support for the New Orleans Police Department, the Audubon Nature Institute announced Tuesday it was canceling the six-day promotion, citing feedback that “this event could be unintentionally divisive.” A statement from a spokesperson for the Audubon Zoo and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas said the purpose of hosting Blue at the Zoo from May 11 to May 16, alongside the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation, was to “promote and foster positive interactive experiences” with the Police Department. But an announcement last week of the promotion as well as a planned news conference triggered

Police officers nationwide are turning in their badges at record rates amid budget cuts, policy changes and anti-brutality protests. An estimated 5,300 officers quit or retired from the New York Police Department last year, 200 or more cops have left the Seattle force, and in the nation’s capital, the union reports that the 3,700-strong Metropolitan Police Department is down 300 badges since the D.C. Council enacted sweeping police reforms last summer.(Snip) In Baltimore, the department has lost nearly 300 officers since last year, leaving detectives “overwhelmed with their caseload because they, too, are short-staffed,” said the leader of the local

Pfizer said Tuesday it expects to do $26 billion in sales this year from its two-shot COVID-19 vaccine alone. That’s up more than 70 percent from its last forecast, largely thanks to new contracts signed with countries struggling to get their hands on vaccine doses. The estimate assumes that Pfizer will deliver 1.6 billion doses of its COVID-19 vaccine in 2021.(Snip)“Based on what we’ve seen, we believe that a durable demand for our COVID-19 vaccine—similar to that of the flu vaccines—is a likely outcome,” CEO Albert Bourla said on a conference call with investors.

What The Frapp? Dripping in extra whipped cream, caramel syrup drizzle, pumps of cinnamon dulce and honey, five bananas and more—this sticky, tricky Starbucks order has social media percolating.(Snip)“This order comes in every other week,” a fellow Starbucks staffer tweeted, empathizing with Josie via a picture of a Green Tea Creme Frappuccino with 29 supplementary specifications. “I raise you this,” another coffee maker carped alongside a flick of a Caffè Misto with over 30 additional demands. And customers who are waiting behind the “Edwards” of the world aren’t fond of the TikTok coffee craze either. “I was behind a woman who had an order

Seattle—There’s a suspected mail thief operating in West Seattle. The victims know his name. So do the police, the post office and prosecutors.
He's been arrested seven times since Jan. 7 and each time, he was released from jail, sometimes within 48 hours after his arrest. His name is Jason Turner and his case is another example of a suspected repeat offender falling through the cracks of the criminal justice system, leaving everyone who touches his case frustrated.(Snip) “When you've arrested someone multiple times for the same crime, it's extremely frustrating," said Sgt Randy Huserik of the Seattle Police Department.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that US efforts to free Americans detained in Iran are “separate” from negotiations to curb the country’s nuclear program. Psaki said the issues aren’t linked after the US denied an Iran state media report that the US will unfreeze $7 billion in Iranian assets for the release of four Americans. Four Iranians also would be freed. “Our policy as the US government has not changed on ransom. But I will tell you that discussions to bring home Americans who are held in Iran are something that are raised — that is raised at the highest level

White House press secretary Jen Psaki believes President Biden deserves credit for how he has handled the border and blamed Donald Trump for the migrant surge and the overflowing immigration system. 'After four years of an immigration system rooted in destructive and chaotic policies, President Biden is taking the challenge head on and building a fair, orderly and human immigration system,' the White House press secretary said at the top of her briefing. Psaki launched into a list of accomplishments related to the crisis, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nearly doubling their rate processing unaccompanied minor migrants and working to reunify families.

New York City schools have canceled the Columbus Day holiday, replacing it with an Indigenous Peoples’ Day, while also making Juneteenth a school holiday and getting rid of snow days altogether. The city Department of Education called Oct. 11 “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in the 2021-2022 calendar it posted on its website Tuesday, flagging the beginning and end dates for the school year as well as winter and spring recesses but not the big changes within in a tweet. The move, which was announced, however, in a press release to education beat reporters, officially cancels for school kid recognition what remains a federal, state and city holiday

The family of a Michigan woman says she died 'as the result of complications after receiving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.' Anne VanGeest, 35, a mother-of-four from Easton Township, was given the one-shot immunization on April 8, reported WOOD TV. Five days later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended a temporary pause of J&J over blood clot concerns.
VanGeest's family said that within a few days, she developed a nonstop headache. She eventually was taken to Mercy Health Saint Mary's hospital in Grand Rapids, where she died April 19,
