Man busted at JFK with 35 live
finches stuffed inside hair curlers

A man was caught at JFK Airport on Monday allegedly trying to smuggle in 35 live finches from Guyana—stuffed inside plastic hair curlers and concealed inside his clothes, authorities said. Kevin Andre McKenzie is just the latest alleged would-be songbird smuggler busted using the hair-accessory method to bring in the coveted creatures, which are used in high-stakes singing contests popular in Brooklyn and Queens. McKenzie allegedly told them he had been offered $3,000 to traffic the finches into the US. He was charged with the illegal importation of wildlife and was released on a $25,0000 bond, authorities said.

Comments:

Is that a finch down your pants Mr. Berger, or are you just happy to meet me? New Americans celebrate Diversity above all. Here, émigrés from Guyana hold finch singing contests in our public parks, with winning finches becoming highly prized and valued up to $10K.

Meanwhile, Customs treats this like a joke, but diseases imported this way bear a heavy cost. Is there a healthy balance between Diversity and the health of Failed America? "Birds brought to the country can introduce animal diseases and “have the potential to cause significant damage to the nation’s agricultural economy,” said Marty Raybon, acting director of Field Operations for CBP’s New York Field Office. More than 50 million chickens and turkeys in the U.S. died or were intentionally killed in a 2015 outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. They said that is about 12% of the country’s egg-laying population and 8% of the estimated turkeys raised for meat. As for the economic impact, losses were estimated at more than $1 billion.' https://pix11.com/news/local-news/queens/finches-found-hidden-in-hair-rollers-inside-luggage-at-jfk-airport/

Had he just declared his love for the Democrat party and put a nice cash donation down, he would have been treated with Just-Us. Probably the FBI, he Democrat national police force, would have met him at the gate and personally escorted him through customs.

What would have happened if he said that the birds were for Joey Biden? The birds would make more sense than Joey. Everyone needs a hobby. (sigh)

Maybe I'm just having an extra mushy, soft-hearted day today, but I'm feeling very sorry for the little finches being half smothered and confined in such claustrophobic spaces. Poor little guys.

"Half smothered"? If you read many stories like this, you'll sadly find more than half smother. The smuggled animal death rate is horrific, often of species whose populations are low in their native countries. Add that to the pathogens and parasites these unexamined, mishandled, wild-caught creatures bring to this continent, it's clear to see this crime is no peccadillo. West Nile virus anyone?

On a recent walk, I came across a neighborhood littered with the yard sign in this photo. It seems the provocative platitudes we’ve seen on bumper stickers for a century have now taken root in our yards. And for the same reason: To tell the world that the sign-planter holds wonderful beliefs that he’s willing to impose upon and attribute to the rest of his family. It’s surely not because the sign-planter thinks he’s persuading anyone of the rightness of his position, as if the neighbors reading the sign will say to themselves, “Gee, ‘Democracy dies in darkness’ is a great point. I’d never thought of it that way.”
