The leader of Oklahoma’s Cherokee Nation wants Jeep to stop using the tribe’s name on its SUVs. Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation expressed the viewpoint for the first time after Car and Driver magazine inquired whether or not the branding was appropriate in the context of the nationwide rethinking of racial and social justice issues. “I’m sure this comes from a place that is well-intended, but it does not honor us by having our name plastered on the side of a car,” Hoskin told the magazine. Jeep has been using the Cherokee name for nearly five decades,

I smell a HUGE royalty deal here in which the Cherokee Nation receives $100 for every vehicle that rolls out with that name. It's time to monetize your outrage, Native Americans.

Right, OP, Let’s change it to the Jeep Yankee or the Jeep Rebel. Then see what they have to say.

'“The best way to honor us is to learn about our sovereign government, our role in this country, our history, culture, and language and have meaningful dialogue with federally recognized tribes on cultural appropriateness,” the chief wrote to the magazine.
Poster #1 said what I was going to say.
Oh, if you want to talk about cultural appropriateness, then stop riding on horses. It was Europeans who brought horses to the New World.

It would be nice to carry on with our life's problems at this level of importance instead of wasting time and money fending off the likes of Iran and China. Not to mention what is coming across the border.

Sorry but no one is entitled to ‘honor’ due to their race, gender, nationality or heritage. You earn that. If the media bestows it it is meaningless. If you earn it you own it whether it is acknowledged or not. We have become a nation of hapless victims and eternal whiners.

Jeep should honor those who crossed the land bridge over the Bering Strait and made their way down Alaska, then Canada, and finally found themselves somewhere in what became America, weirdly now calling themselves "native Americans". Yes Jeep should rename that model the Hellarewe to commemorate what their tribe said when they woke up that first morning and said "Hey, where the..."

I had an '85 for years. The name did not honor Jeep either. Too small, under powered and unreliable 4 wheel drive.

Since that horrid Super Bowl commercial with their political message maybe it's time to change the Cherokee name to 'Bruce' with the DWI edition that drives itself home. Give me a break the Indians are making noise for nothing all these years of the production of the Cherokee and not a word out of them. Go operate your casino to rob the dumb white eyes some more.

Whatever..... The high alcoholism (over 50%) and drug addiction rate amongst tribe members also does not honor you. Call me mean, but Native Americans want to be treated as if they are all noble and dignified with a peaceful, kind past. In reality, some tribes had slaves, were war like , and were not the eco warriors they want to be depicted as.

Heh, heh, #22. I remember that old joke. I also remember the old TV comedy "F Troop" with Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch. In the show, the local tribe was named the 'Hakawi', an inside joke if ever there was one.

Jeep (and Chrysler) have been making legendarily poor quality vehicles for decades now, so I can hardly fault the chief. Still, in going along with the woke brigade, American Indians are helping erase themselves completely from the public consciousness.
