Pledge your allegiance to “Wakanda Forever”—or else. A veteran Bronx educator claims she was fired in part because she refused to mimic a salute to Black power from the 2018 comic-book movie “Black Panther” during superintendent meetings. At official gatherings of high-level Department of Education bosses, then-Bronx superintendent Meisha Ross Porter often asked the group to do the arms-across-the-chest gesture of solidarity from the mythical African nation of Wakanda. The salute is considered a symbol of empowerment. When Rafaela Espinal—a Dominican-American who describes herself as Afro-Latina—declined to join in, she “was admonished

The "entertainment" industry has far too much power on much of the population. There are those with delusions who cannot see the difference between fantasy and real life. Adults who refuse to mature and grow up as they age. I would feel very silly making these kind of childish gestures in a professional environment. The caliber and maturity of the people in management is astounding. How much time is actually devoted to performing a real adult job. I would say, very little.

I can sympathize with the superintendent. Back in the 50s in my neck of the woods we had a afternoon tv show called The Hawk. Great show. Great make believe. Not quite as good as Wakanda but really good. The Hawk had a secret hand signal for all of the club members. Well we, the boys in the hood,we adopted it and the only way you could get into out under ground system of tunnels was to display THE secret hand sign. I have to say though we never really expelled any body for screwing it up. Especially if they had sack of cookies.

Cancel, cancel, cancel.
I recall, with a smile, the explosion of google searches for travel to and lodging in Wakanda that followed that movie being released.

Go and read the bio for Richard Carranza, the NY superintendent of schools… His parents were Mexican day migrants. He admits he learned English in our public schools.

"A DOE spokeswoman said the department is “committed to fostering a safe, inclusive work environment and strongly dispute any claims of discrimination or improper treatment.”
Good heavens. Where did the geniuses running the Bronx Department of Education find "high level officials" willing to order underlings to "salute" or "pledge allegiance" to a mythical location "created" by a comic book writer?
Yes, the "high level officials" can dispute claims of discrimination or improper treatment, but it's not possible to unsee their actions. We know what they did. They ordered fellow education professionals to salute or "pledge allegiance" to place that doesn't exist, and when one employee refused, they retaliated. Clearly they created a hostile workplace. Look at how they treat their own employees. Imagine the contempt this bunch holds for parents and children in their district.
Another example of government workers forgetting their place, and being confused about who works for whom.

I can understand the need for a feeling of empowerment.
Whenever I feel such a need - - I usually satisfy it by solving some linear differential equations. Those folks prefer manual gestures to a fictitious country.
Pretty much the same thing.

In "normal" times this would be brushed off as an excuse for incompetence or some other valid reason but these days, almost anything qualifies as a reason to remove those who do not bow down to the god of blackness. I still fail to get the reason why half of the country has taken up the worship of a percentage of the population who, if they left the country en masse, would not be missed. I always did my best as an employer to find qualified black job candidates, hired some and made some good friends but this cultural madness is intolerable. I will never go out of my way again to consider skin color as any kind of badge of anything. The current mantra of "white privilege" seems like a joke to those of us who worked our way up to where we are the hard and honest way. Blacks don't seem to realize what they are doing to themselves by their dishonesty, animosity and violent behavior. The white people who encourage it are equally as delusional.
